Cassava is the sixth most important crop in the world, and it is attacked by many pests, such as Erinnyis ello (L.) (Lepidoptera: Sphingidae). This lepidopteran pest has natural enemies that can efficiently control its population, such as Trichogramma spp. (Hymenoptera: Trichogrammatidae). The objective of this research was to assess the flight capacity, parasitism and emergence of Trichogramma pretiosum, T. marandobai and T. demoraesi and to select the most efficient species among them for biological control programs. The flight capacity of these species was assessed in test units consisting of a plastic PVC cylinder with a rigid, transparent plastic circle on the upper portion of the cylinder and an extruded polystyrene disk to close the bottom of the... |

This study evaluated the parasitism of Trichogramma pretiosum Riley (Hymenoptera: Trichogrammatidae) on eggs of Helicoverpa armigera Hübner (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae) at different ages and densities. The rates of parasitism and emergence, the number of parasitoids emerged per egg and sex ratio of offspring were evaluated in both experiments. Eggs of H. armigera up to 36 hours provided greater parasitism and emergence of adults compared to eggs up to 60 hours old. The number of parasitoids, which emerged per host egg, was greater than one and the sex ratio remained around 80% of females, regardless of the egg development stage. Females of T. pretiosum responded with superior rates of parasitism, emergence and number of parasitoids per egg at the densities of... |

The European pepper moth Duponchelia fovealis (Zeller, 1847) (Lepidoptera: Crambidae), despite being among the principal pests of strawberries in Brazil. However, biological control methods are rarely documented for this pest. In the current study, the goal was to select promising Trichogramma strains to enable the control of D. fovealis and to determine the acceptance of different ages of host eggs by the parasitoid. In the first bioassay, evaluations were done on the biological parameters of five strains of Trichogramma pretiosum Riley and one of Trichogramma galloi Zucchi (Hymenoptera: Trichogrammatidae). The best performance came from the strains, Tp18 (T. pretiosum) and Tg (T. galloi), showing parasitism and viability higher than 50 and 90%,... |

Trichogramma spp. (Hymenoptera: Trichogrammatidae) can control Diaphania hyalinata Linnaeus (Lepidoptera: Pyralidae). On the other hand, pesticides may reduce the efficiency of natural enemies. The objective was to evaluate the side-effects of fungicides used in the production of cucurbitaceous crops on Trichogramma atopovirilia Oatman & Platner parasitizing D. hyalinata eggs. The fungicides used in bioassays were: azoxystrobin (0.08 g active ingredient [ai] L-1), chlorothalonil (2.00 g ai L-1), mancozeb (1.60 g ai L-1), tebuconazole (0.25 g ai L-1) and thiophanate-methyl (0.49 g ai L-1). Cardboards with 30 D. hyalinata eggs previously immersedin fungicide solutions and distilled water (control) were offered separately to 20 newly emerged T.... |

The effects of the egg density of Diaphania hyalinata (L.) on several biological parameters of Trichogramma exiguum Pinto & Platner and T. pretiosum Riley were investigated. For that, 24h-old egg masses were isolated in glass tubes (15 replicates; 1 egg mass = 1 replicate), and offered to parasitization by a newly-emerged female of T. pretiosum or T. exiguum 24h at the proportion of one female to 5, 10, 15, 20, 25, 30, 35 and 40 eggs of D. hyalinata. The following parameters were evaluated: number of parasitized eggs, number of individuals per egg, viability and sex ratio. Trichogramma exiguum parasitized more eggs than T. pretiosum when more than 25 eggs were available per female. The percentage of emergence was satisfactory to T. pretiosum in... |

Results of studies with Trichogramma in Brazil are presented, especially those developed at ESALQ/USP in the past two decades (1984-2004). The project involved taxonomy, rearing techniques, biological and behavioral aspects of the pests and parasitoids, pest population dynamics, release techniques, selectivity studies, and efficiency evaluation. It can be considered a model project and has been adopted by other biological control programs in Brazil and Latin America. The program has given rise to a number of publications, allowing the formation of human resources in this area and opening new research areas. The results indicated that the parasitoid can be used to control key pests in cotton, sugarcane, stored grain, vegetables, corn, soybean, and tomato.... |

With the aid of scanning electron microscopy, the external morphology and distribution of the antennal sensilla were described for females of Gryon gallardoi (Bréthes), an egg-parasitoid of coreids. The geniculated and clavated antennae are composed of 12 antennomeres. Along the flagelum we registered dorsal glands and seven types of sensilla: papillary, chaetica of two sizes - long and short types, styloconic grooved-peg, sickle-shaped and trichodea with numerical and spatial variation among the flagellomeres. Functional aspects of the sensilla are discussed in the context of G. gallardoi antennal drumming behavior. Thus, the determination and the description pattern of antennal sensilla in G. gallardoi, in the present study, is an advance regarding the... |

To evaluate the effect of egg age of Spartocera dentiventris (Berg) on the parasitism by Gryon gallardoi (Brethes), groups of 12 eggs of 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, and 12 days old were exposed to one female of G. gallardoi on a test tube, with the wasp observed for 2h subsequently. Later, the eggs were individualised and incubated (25 ± 1°C; 12h photoperiod) until adult emergence. To identify the preferred age, groups of 12 eggs of 1, 3, 5, 7 and 12 days of age were simultaneously exposed to a parasitoid female on an arena for 2h. These groups were also individualised and incubated until parasitism was confirmed. On all ages tested parasitism was at about 88.5 ± 2.64%, with a reduction in adult parasitoid emergence with age increasing (P < 0.01). The... |

Abstract: The objective of this work was to determine the functional response of the parasitoid Trichogramma pretiosum on Trichoplusia ni eggs at different temperatures (20, 25, and 30ºC) and egg densities (5, 10, 15, 20, 25, and 30 eggs). The logistic regression showed a type-II functional response for all temperatures. The search efficiency of T. pretiosum was reported as 0.049±0.0019, 0.069±0.0042 and 0.068±0.0033 per hour, and the estimated handling times were 1.82±0.0424, 1.69±0.0398, and 1.54±0.0498 hour at 20, 25 and 30ºC, respectively. Females of Trichogramma pretiosum show greater efficiency at 30ºC and a type-II functional response. The parasitism rate decreases, when host density increases. |

The objective of this work was to improve the mass rearing technique of Euschistus heros in laboratory. Nymphs and adults were reared at densities 100, 200, 300 and 400 eggs per Petri dish (9 cm diameter), and at 50, 100, 150 and 200 couples per rearing cages (900 mL), respectively. Survival rate of immature stages and survivorship and reproduction of adults were determinated. Survivorship of nymph to adult was the highest (89%) at density 100 eggs per dish. Adult survivorship was independent of density, and 100 couples per cage were the best to improve quality of the produced progeny. In these conditions, fecundity was 160.8±9.28 eggs per female, and a total of 8,950±456 eggs per cage per month was produced. Two hundred couples per cage showed a negative... |
