Estimation par spectrofluométrie des concentrations d'hydrocarbures dans l'eau de mer en Manche Occidentale à la suite du naufrage de l"AMOCO CADIZ" du 30 mars au 18 avril 1978 ArchiMer
Marchand, Michel.
The oil .pollution, resulting from the "AMOCO CADIZ" tanker spill on the Brittany coast of North Finistere-has affected a very large section of the western Channel, limited for the period covering March 30 to April 18 to the west by the 5°W meridian, to the east by the St-Brieuc Bay, to the north by the 49°20' parallel. The contents of hydrocarbons observed in sea water at different levels show that the whole of water column is contaminated by hydrocarbons and indicate very probably the pollution of the sedimentary phase in the areas, hited by the drifting sheets.

Which ocean colour algorithm for MERIS in North West European waters? ArchiMer
Tilstone, Gavin; Mallor-hoya, Silvana; Gohin, Francis; Couto, Andre Belo; Sa, Carolina; Goela, Priscila; Cristina, Sonia; Airs, Ruth; Icely, John; Zuehlke, Marco; Groom, Steve.
Chlorophyll-a (Chl a) is a key parameter for the assessment of water quality in coastal and shelf environments. The availability of satellite ocean colour offers the potential of monitoring these regions at unprecedented spatial and temporal scales, as long as a high level of accuracy can be achieved. To use satellite derived Chl a to monitor these environments, it is imperative that rigorous accuracy assessments are undertaken to select the most accurate ocean colour algorithm(s). To this end, the accuracy of a range of ocean colour Chl a algorithms for use with Medium Imaging Resolution Spectrometer (MERIS) Level 2 (L2) Remote Sensing Reflectance (Rrs), using two different atmospheric correction (AC) processors (COASTCOLOUR and MERIS Ground Segment...

A deterministic population dynamics model to study the distribution of a benthic bivalve with planktonic larvae (Paphia rhomboides) in the English Channel (NW Europe) ArchiMer
Savina, Marie; Menesguen, Alain.
This paper describes the development of a modelling framework to study the distribution in the English Channel of a benthic bivalve with planktonic larvae, Paphia rhomboides. Age-structured population dynamics and growth models are linked together to a compartmental transport and NPZ (Nutrients-Phytoplankton-Zooplankton) model. Used in a spin-up mode, i.e. with identical environmental forcing from a year to the next, this deterministic model converges to the same steady state whatever the initial conditions, after 15-30 years of simulation. Important features of the P. rhomboides distribution are reproduced, particularly its high abundance in the GNB (Golfe Normand-Breton) and its almost complete absence in the Western Channel. The results are discussed in...

Modelling larval dispersal and settlement of the reef-building polychaete Sabellaria alveolata: Role of hydroclimatic processes on the sustainability of biogenic reefs ArchiMer
Ayata, Sakina-dorothee; Ellien, Celine; Dumas, Franck; Dubois, Stanislas; Thiebaut, Eric.
The honeycomb worm Sabellaria alveolata forms biogenic reefs which constitute diversity hotspots on tidal flats. The largest known reefs in Europe, located in the Bay of Mont-Saint-Michel (English Channel), are suffering increasing anthropogenic disturbances which raise the question of their sustainability. As the ability to recover depends partly on the recolonization of damaged reefs by larval supply, evaluating larval dispersal and the connectivity between distant reefs is a major challenge for their conservation. In the present study, we used a 3D biophysical model to simulate larval dispersal under realistic hydroclimatic conditions and estimate larval retention and exchanges among the two reefs of different sizes within the bay. The model takes into...

In-situ database toolbox for short-term dispersion model validation in macro-tidal seas, application for 2D-model ArchiMer
Bailly Du Bois, P.; Dumas, Franck; Solier, L.; Voiseux, C..
Appropriate field data are required to check the reliability of hydrodynamic models simulating the dispersion of soluble substances in the marine environment. This study deals with the collection of physical measurements and soluble tracer data intended specifically for this kind of validation. The intensity of currents as well as the complexity of topography and tides around the Cap de La Hague in the centre of the English Channel make it one of the most difficult areas to represent in terms of hydrodynamics and dispersion. Controlled releases of tritium-in the form of HTO-are carried out in this area by the AREVA-NC plant, providing an excellent soluble tracer. A total of 14,493 measurements were acquired to track dispersion in the hours and days...

Dynamique des matières en suspensions minérales des eaux de surface de la Manche observée par satellite et modélisée numériquement. ArchiMer
Rivier, Aurelie.
Study of mineral suspended particulate matter (SPM) is essential to understand ecosystem dynamics. SPM influences light penetration which is closely related to primary production and carries pollutants and nutrients within the water masses. This work aims to study near-surface mineral SPM dynamics in the English Channel using two complementary methods: remote-sensing by satellites and numerical modelling. Firstly, MODIS and MERIS satellite images processed by the IFREMER semi-analytical algorithm and describing non-algal SPM, are analysed to build three statistical models which are able to estimate near-surface SPM using simple variables, e.g., tidal coefficient, significant wave height and mean chlorophyll-a concentration. Secondly, the three-dimensional...

A two-stage biomass model to assess the English Channel cuttlefish (Sepia officinalis L.) stock ArchiMer
Gras, Michael; Roel, Beatriz A.; Coppin, Franck; Foucher, Eric; Robin, Jean-paul.
The English Channel cuttlefish (Sepia officinalis) is the most abundant cephalopod resource in the Northeast Atlantic and one of the three most valuable resources for English Channel fishers. Depletion methods and age-structured models have been used to assess the stock, though they have shown limitations related to the model assumptions and data demand. A two-stage biomass model is, therefore, proposed here using, as input data, four abundance indices derived from survey and commercial trawl data collected by Ifremer and Cefas. The model suggests great interannual variability in abundance during the 17 years of the period considered and a decreasing trend in recent years. Model results suggest that recruitment strength is independent of spawning-stock...

Phytoplankton distribution from Western to Central English Channel, revealed by automated flow cytometry during the summer-fall transition ArchiMer
Louchart, Arnaud; Lizon, Fabrice; Lefebvre, Alain; Didry, Morgane; Schmitt, François G.; Artigas, Luis Felipe.
Automated pulse shape-recording flow cytometry was applied to address phytoplankton spatial distribution, at high frequency, in stratified and well mixed water masses in the Western and Central English Channel during the summer-fall transition. Cytometric pulse shapes derived from optical features of single cells allowed the characterization of eight phytoplankton groups. Abundance and total red fluorescence (chlorophyll a autofluorescence) per group were used to define six phytoplankton communities. Their distribution revealed high spatial heterogeneity. Abundance presented a longitudinal gradient for six over the eight groups and succession of brutal shifts along the cruise. Maximum values were often located near the Ushant front in the Western English...

Stock assessment of the English Channel stock of cuttlefish with a two-stage biomass model ArchiMer
Alemany, Juliette; Foucher, Eric; Rivot, Etienne; Vigneau, Joel; Robin, Jean-paul.
Among the English Channel fishery, the importance of cuttlefish stock has increased, following the cephalopods global landings and market trend. The stock is currently managed at regional scale but not by European regulations, although it is a shared species targeted by French and British fishing fleets at several stages of its life-cycle and across much of its distributional range. An assessment of this stock was conducted in June 2014 by fitting a two-stage biomass model on a 22 years’ time-series (1992-2013). We present the last update of cuttlefish stock assessment using the same model on years 1992-2014. As the outputs of the model are sensitive to a fix growth parameter, we explore possibilities to improve the model. The use of a Bayesian framework...

Characterising Essential Fish Habitat using spatio‐temporal analysis of fishery data: A case study of the European seabass spawning areas ArchiMer
Dambrine, Chloe; Woillez, Mathieu; Huret, Martin; De Pontual, Helene.
Fish habitats sustain essential functions for fish to complete their life cycle, such as feeding, growing and spawning. Conservation is crucial to maintain fish populations and their exploitation. Since 2013, the spawning stock biomass of the northern stock of European seabass (Dicentrarchus labrax) has been in a worrying state. A series of low recruitments with a persistently high level of fishing has been blamed, raising concerns about the processes involved in seabass reproduction and settlement in nurseries. Here, we characterise seabass spawning areas along the French Atlantic coast using vessel monitoring system (VMS) data. A non‐linear geostatistical approach was applied, from 2008 to 2014, to detect locations where seabass aggregate for spawning....

Une typologie à partir de la forme des séries chronologiques (TFS) ArchiMer
Ibanez, F; Fromentin, Jean-marc.
The typology of shapes of series (TSS) aims to gather together species having similar temporal patterns corresponding to different types of ecological behaviour. Each type of change, referred to as the ecological shape, is considered to reflect a particular demographic strategy (sudden pullulation of opportunistic species, fluctuations with environmental changes, etc.). This method which consists in the definition of four shape parameters and a classification among the series, taking into account these shape parameters, does not replace the usual statistical analyses, mainly multivariate ones, but precedes them. Such preliminary information is useful for the choice of the subsequent treatments, avoiding the need to analyse simultaneously species presenting...
