The relationship between plant density and survival to water stress in seedlings of a legume tree Acta Botanica
Honda,Eliane Akiko; Pilon,Natashi Aparecida Lima; Durigan,Giselda.
ABSTRACT Competition for soil water is one of the major processes that drive the assembly of plant communities, particularly in regions subjected to long dry seasons. The relationship between plant density and soil water competition has strong, but poorly understood, practical implications for population dynamics, restoration and conservation. We planted seedlings of the pioneer legume tree Senegalia polyphylla in containers and assessed the effects of plant density on their resistance to water stress. We completely eliminated the above-ground parts (stem and shoots) of randomly selected plants at 60-days post-planting in order to create three different densities of seedlings. We saturated the soil of the remaining seedlings and then deprived them of...

Temporal Crop Coefficients and Water Productivity of Lettuce (Lactuca sativa L.) Hydroponics In Planthouse CIGR Journal
Muharomah, Riani; Setiawan, Budi Indra; Purwanto, Mohamad Yanuar Jarwadi; Liyantono, Liyantono.
Almost all countries in the world have used lettuce hydroponic cultivation in planthouses because it is appropriate for plant growth and production. The microclimate inside planthouse is an environmental factor that affects plant growth and development. Vegetables planted in the planthouse have a great deal of water requirement. Selecting a method with a more accurate estimation of crop evapotranspiration is a critical factor for efficient water management. In this research, the climates that are affecting the lettuce evapotranspiration with modification of floating hydroponic technique inside the planthouse were investigated. The objectives of this research are to figure out the microclimate, the appropriate model of the potential evapotranspiration, and...

Maza, Minotshing; Bandyopadhyay, Arnab; Bhadra, Aditi.
An ArcGIS toolbar was developed with the help of ArcObjects within ArcGIS environment to estimate evapotranspiration (ET) and net irrigation requirement (NIR) on raster based approach. The toolbar can estimate ET on a daily or monthly basis either with Hargreaves and Samani method or FAO56-PM method and calculate the corresponding NIR on a monthly basis. The toolbar was tested using normal monthly meteorological data (maximum temperature, minimum temperature, relative humidity, wind speed, solar radiation and rainfall) collected from 133 India Meteorological Department (IMD) stations covering 19 agro-ecological regions from 1971–2000. These point meteorological data were interpolated using ordinary kriging method and resampled at 1 km spatial resolution to...

Plant height based evapotranspiration model for eucalyptus CIGR Journal
Singh, Santosh Kumar; Verma, C. L.; Sharma, D. K..
Bio-drainage is an environmentally favored cheaper option for managing waterlogged areas and does not involve specialized skills and techniques for design. It may be used for any type of soils and climate without any topographical disturbance where engineering measures may not be economical or practical solution.  It is being recommended for controlling water logging, salinity, intercepting seepage and as an alternative to subsurface drainage for successful crop production. The most common tree recommended for bio-drainage is eucalyptus due to its high ET demand, tolerance to waterlogging, salinity and sodicity. Annual budgeting of ground water extraction is required for designing bio-drainage belt. ET demand of bio-drainage belt is an essential plant...

ABSTRACT This study estimated the reference evapotranspiration rate (ETo) for the Itacaiúnas River Watershed (IRW), Eastern Amazonia, and measured the accuracy of eight empirical equations: Penman-Monteith (PM), Priestley-Taylor (PT), Hargreaves and Samani (HS), Camargo (CAM), Thornthwaite (TH), Hamon (HM), Kharrufa (KF) and Turc (TC) using monthly data from 1980 to 2013. In addition, it verifies the regional applicability to the IRW using a for the Marabá-PA station. The methods TC and PM (FAO56) presented the best results, which demonstrate that radiation and higher temperatures are the dominant drivers in the Evapotranspiration process, while relative humidity and wind speed have a much smaller impact. The temporal and spatial variability of ETo for IRW...

Revisiting the probabilistic definition of drought: strengths, limitations and an agrometeorological adaptation Bragantia
Blain,Gabriel Constantino.
Drought is a slow-moving hazard that occurs in virtually all countries of the world. In the light of this, several indices have been developed to improve the detection of drought's onset, as well as quantifying other features of this phenomenon. The Standardized Precipitation Index (SPI) is often used in order to characterize meteorological droughts. In addition, this index is largely used by Brazilian's agricultural institutions. In order to add important information to the drought literature, this review article described a general definition of drought, evaluated it from a statistical point of view, and also described the SPI strengths and limitations. An adaptation of the SPI that aims to develop a probability-based agricultural drought index was also...

Water balance in karst: case study of the Ribeirão da Onça catchment in Colombo City, Paraná State - Brazil BABT
Vestena,Leandro Redin; Kobiyama,Masato.
With the objective to analyze the hydrological processes and the water balance, a simplified water balance method and the modified Penman formula were applied to the Ribeirão da Onça river catchment in Colombo city, Paraná State. For the analysis, the data obtained during the monitoring period from 1997 to 2000 were utilized. The results showed that the values of the real evapotranspiration estimated by the method of the simplified water balance were negative for the certain periods and for other period sometimes more than those of the potential evapotranspiration estimated by the modified Penman formula. It implied the existence of significant groundwater recharge from other catchments to the study area, and indicates that the simplified water balance...

Irrigation Water Management in Latin America Chilean J. Agric. Res.
de Oliveira,Aureo S; Trezza,Ricardo; Holzapfel,Eduardo; Lorite,Ignacio; Paz,Vital Pedro S.
Latin American countries show a great potential for expanding their irrigated areas. Irrigation is important for strengthening local and regional economy and for enhancing food security. The present paper aimed at providing a brief review on key aspects of irrigation management in Latin America. Poor irrigation management can have great impact on crop production and on environment while good management reduces the waste of soil and water and help farmers maximizing their profits. It was found that additional research is needed to allow a better understanding of crop water requirements under Latin American conditions as well as to provide farmers with local derived information for irrigation scheduling. The advantages of deficit irrigation practices and the...

Methods to Estimate Lettuce Evapotranspiration in Greenhouse Conditions in the Central Zone of Chile Chilean J. Agric. Res.
Casanova P,Manuel; Messing,Ingmar; Joel,Abraham; Cañete M,Alberto.
This study evaluates five methods to estimate crop evapotranspiration in greenhouse conditions. It compares their performance in relation to the evapotranspiration directly determined from water balance measurements (ETlys) in an irrigated lettuce (Lactuca sativa L.) crop during 9 weeks. Daily values of the reference evapotranspiration (ETo) from Class A pan (CAP), Piche atmometers (ATM), Andersson evaporimeters (ANE), FAO-Radiation (FRE) and FAO-Penman-Monteith (PME) equations were compared. The methods showed similar temporal variations but at different ranges as follows: ANE < CAP < FRE < PME < ATM. Furthemore, ETo had a clear correlation with solar radiation. Crop coefficients (Kc = ETlys/ETo) varied somewhat amongst the methods, but trends...

Calibration methods for the Hargreaves-Samani equation Ciência e Agrotecnologia
Ferreira,Lucas Borges; Cunha,Fernando França da; Duarte,Anunciene Barbosa; Sediyama,Gilberto Chohaku; Cecon,Paulo Roberto.
ABSTRACT The estimation of the reference evapotranspiration is an important factor for hydrological studies, design and management of irrigation systems, among others. The Penman Monteith equation presents high precision and accuracy in the estimation of this variable. However, its use becomes limited due to the large number of required meteorological data. In this context, the Hargreaves-Samani equation could be used as alternative, although, for a better performance a local calibration is required. Thus, the aim was to compare the calibration process of the Hargreaves-Samani equation by linear regression, by adjustment of the coefficients (A and B) and exponent (C) of the equation and by combinations of the two previous alternatives. Daily data from 6...

Conversions of natural ecosystems, e.g., from rain forests to managed plantations, result in significant changes in the hydrological cycle including periodic water scarcity. In Indonesia, large areas of forest were lost and extensive oil palm plantations were established over the last decades. We conducted a combined social and environmental study in a region of recent land-use change, the Jambi Province on Sumatra. The objective was to derive complementary lines of arguments to provide balanced insights into environmental perceptions and eco-hydrological processes accompanying land-use change. Interviews with villagers highlighted concerns regarding decreasing water levels in wells during dry periods and increasing fluctuations in stream flow between...

Linkages Among Water Vapor Flows, Food Production, and Terrestrial Ecosystem Services Ecology and Society
Gordon, Line; Stockholm University; line@system.ecology.su.se; Folke, Carl; Stockholm University; calle@system.ecology.su.se; Falkenmark, Malin; Swedish Natural Science Research Council;; Engwall, Maria; ;.
Global freshwater assessments have not addressed the linkages among water vapor flows, agricultural food production, and terrestrial ecosystem services. We perform the first bottom-up estimate of continental water vapor flows, subdivided into the major terrestrial biomes, and arrive at a total continental water vapor flow of 70,000 km3/yr (ranging from 56,000 to 84,000 km3/yr). Of this flow, 90% is attributed to forests, including woodlands (40,000 km3/yr), wetlands (1400 km3/yr), grasslands (15,100 km3/yr), and croplands (6800 km3/yr). These terrestrial biomes sustain society with essential welfare-supporting ecosystem services, including food production. By analyzing the freshwater requirements of an increasing demand for food in the year 2025, we...
