Assessment of the strategies of organic fruit production and fruit drying in Uganda Organic Eprints
Chongtham, Imam Raj; de Neergaard, Andreas; Pillot, Didier.
Organic agriculture in Uganda is developing at a fast pace and despite this trend Uganda is still unable to produce enough fresh and dry organic fruits mainly pineapple to meet the exporters demand. This current research investigated the strategies of farmers at production level by assessing the pros and cons of fruit growing, organic agriculture and fruit drying in order to understand the underlying causal factor for the low production of organic dry fruits in a major fruit producing district of Uganda. The study was carried out in two separate and distinctive areas; one which only produces and export fresh organic pineapple and the other which exports dried fruits (mainly pineapple and papaya). About 10 % of the farmers in the two study areas were...

Conversion to Organic Production Software (OrgPlan, OF0159) Organic Eprints
Padel, Susanne.
This is the final report for Defra Project OF0159. The Organic Conversion Planner (OrgPlan) is a computer program for farmers and advisors reducing the time input necessary for planning a conversion to organic farming. Conversion planning can help to identify whether organic management is suited to the farm and potential problems during the conversion period itself. This involves an assessment of the current situation of the farm, based on which proposals for an organic 'target (endpoint)' can be developed. This includes proposed rotation(s), cropping and stocking plan for the specific farm situation and the proposals need to be tested for their technical and financial feasibility, including impact on forage supply, nutrient requirements and financial...

Nitrogen and Energy Utilization on Conventional and Organic Dairy Farms in Norway Organic Eprints
Koesling, Matthias.
To improve environmental sustainability it is important that all sectors in a society contribute to improving the utilization of inputs as energy and nutrients. In Norway, dairy farming contributes with an important share to the added value from the agricultural sector, although there is little information available about utilization of energy and nitrogen (N). Many results on sustainability have been published on dairy farming. However, due to Norway’s Nordic climatic conditions, mountainous and rugged topography and an agricultural policy that can design its own prices and subsidies, results from other countries are hardly representative for Norwegian conditions. To bridge this gap, the objective of this study was to analyse if the utilisation of...

Eight years of organic farming at Pwllpeiran – livestock production and the financial performance of organic upland Organic Eprints
Frost, David; McLean, Barbara M L; Evans, D Eifion.
This report was presented at the UK Organic Research 2002 Conference. Established for 8 years, this project evaluates the practicalities of organic beef and sheep production on an upland farm in an ESA. Grassland productivity, stocking rates and animal performance are closely related to seasonal variations in the clover content of the small area of improved land. Improving sales have been offset by increasing input costs. Subsidy payments assist financial performance, but ESA prescriptions effectively prevent increased production.

Ekoproduktionens utvecklingsalternativ bör begrundas Organic Eprints
Vehkasalo, Ville.

Corporate Social Responsibility and Organic Farming –Experiences in Austria Organic Eprints
Gössinger, Katharina; Freyer, Bernhard.
Although the market for organic products has been growing in Austria for a few years, the rising competition of so called regional, natural or sustainable products should be taken seriously. One solution in times of “conventionalisation” of organic farming could be higher ethical standards in organic farming and more effective communication of ethical values, as it has already been practised by a great number of medium-sized and large enterprises under the name of “Corporate Social Responsibility” (CSR). CSR refers to all services that are beyond legal requirements, performed on a voluntary basis. This article discusses the topic CSR and similar approaches in the Austrian organic sector on the basis of 30 interviews with Austrian organic farmers and...

Paisagens e etnoconhecimentos na agricultura Ticuna e Cocama no alto rio Solimões, Amazonas. Organic Eprints

Economic sustainability and risk efficiency of organic versus conventional cropping systems Organic Eprints
Lein, G; Hardaker, J B; Flaten, O.
Environmental, social and economic attributes are important for the sustainability of a farming system. Resilience is also important yet has seldom been directly considered in evaluations of economic sustainability. In economic terms, resilience has to do with the capacity of the farm business to survive various risks and other shocks. A whole-farm stochastic simulation model over a six-year planning horizon was used to analyse organic and conventional cropping systems using a model of a representative farm in Eastern Norway. The relative economic sustainability of alternative systems under changing assumptions about future technology and price regimes was examined in terms of financial survival to the end of the planning period. The same alternatives were...

Bettina, Maccagnani; Roberto, Ferrari; Marco, Pozzati.
We aimed to demonstrate the applicability of the entomo-vectoring approach, using as a case study the control of strawberry grey mould Botrytis cinerea, with the biocontrol fungus Gliocladium catenulatum, delivered to strawberry flowers by honey bees. The trial targets cultivations in the open field included four treatments: untreated control, chemical fungicide, entomovectored biocontrol, and chemical + biocontrol combined. The proportion of mouldy berries, and/or the marketable yield of healthy berries was recorded from each treatment, along with other parameters of local interest, and showed the best results in the treatment biocontrol+chemical control, and in the entomovectored biocontrol with respect to untreated control.

Economic analysis of stockless, horticultural crop rotations on a model farm in temperate zone organic systems Organic Eprints
Schmutz, Ulrich; Firth, Chris; Rayns, Francis.
Research draws on an organic research farm site in central England with a temperate zone climate - fairly common for the northern lowlands of Europe. The soil type is a sandy loam with 591 mm rainfall. Detailed economic and agronomic data have been collected since conversion began in 1995. The economic analysis discusses rotational gross and net margins of more than 30 different rotations with different fertility building and vegetable crops (potatoes, cabbages, onions, carrots, leeks and parsnips). Sensitivity and risk analysis of key variable costs important for successful organic vegetable production are shown. Rotational gross margins varied from –570 €/ha to 6,341 €/ha. Highest output-risk was introduced by yield variations, not price variation....
