Toasting field beans can improve the protein quality of field beans markedly. In the feed demonstrations carried out in Project EcoProtein testing a new method of toasting with a drum dryer, showed, however, only reduced effect on the protein quality due to a lower than optimal temperature. The toasted field beans were fed in two organic dairy herds, replacing a part of the concentrates in the ration in a cross-over design. Preliminary results showed no milk yield difference in herd 1, but a reduced milk yield level in herd 2. |

At the Hessian state domain Frankenhausen, an organic farm with comparatively high yield potential, the integration of nature conservation measures is tested. Economic investigations aim to identify costs and changes of performance due to the adaptation of production processes to nature conservation targets. The main focus is on temporary measures that, like field-flower strips, potentially promote biodiversity on arable land. Initial calculations show the costs that must be taken into account for wildflower strips with autochthonous species on arable land. The analysis particularly considers the complex intra-farm integration of the conservation measures as a special characteristic of organic agriculture systems. |

Abstract: Organic farming is becoming more and more popular among Polish farmers. In the year of the accession of Poland to the European Union, the number of certified organic farms amounted to 1683. By the end of 2005, which is after the first year of Poland’s membership in the EU, the number of farms practicing exclusively organic farming or taking up that course of production amounted to more than 7000. On the basis of agricultural accountancy from 2004, an economic and production evaluation of 110 organic farms included in the Polish FADN sample was carried out. The organic farms were classified into 5 classes of economic size. 92% of them were of economic size below 16 ESU. The study contains economic and production results achieved by a group of... |

This is the final report for Defra Project OF0159. The Organic Conversion Planner (OrgPlan) is a computer program for farmers and advisors reducing the time input necessary for planning a conversion to organic farming. Conversion planning can help to identify whether organic management is suited to the farm and potential problems during the conversion period itself. This involves an assessment of the current situation of the farm, based on which proposals for an organic 'target (endpoint)' can be developed. This includes proposed rotation(s), cropping and stocking plan for the specific farm situation and the proposals need to be tested for their technical and financial feasibility, including impact on forage supply, nutrient requirements and financial... |

Organic farming aims to create an integrated, humane, environmentally and economically sustainable agricultural system. For organic dairy systems, the fulfilment of these aims requires the understanding and integration of a number of systems components including land use (mixed or dairy only) and stocking rate; grassland and forage production (including quantity and quality); potential milk yield (and milk quality); animal nutrition (largely farm based) and health; environmental sustainability such as farm nutrient balance; the financial status of the farm (including enterprise performance, fixed costs and labour use and farm income and profit) and finally the policy environment in which organic dairy systems operate. This review discusses worldwide... |

A four year experiment is being carried out, at Ege University Department of Horticulture, in which three different pre-crops are tested under an organic management system as compared to fallow. The aim of the experiment is to identify the most suitable rotation program for organic vegetable production in Turkey. Vicia sativa (common vetch), Brassica oleracea var. italica (broccoli), Vicia faba ‘Sevilla’ (faba bean) and fallow are tested as preceding (winter) crops. During the experiment carried out between 2007 and 2009, the main crops were tomato (2007), zucchini (2008) and pepper (2009). Broccoli represented the farmers’ choice as a winter vegetable. Vetch (incorporated) and faba bean (partially harvested and incorporated) were selected as legumes well... |

The purpose of this report is to present possible impacts of new technology and changes in legislation on the profitability of different types of organic farms. The aim is also to look at both the current and future trends in the organic area in Denmark. Besides the economic aspects, the report also shows the nutrient surplus for selected organic farms. Analyses carried out at the Food and Resource Economic Institute (FOI) have previ-ously shown that price premiums of up to 50% on pig meat and 20% on arable farm products is needed to make the organic production profitable. The price premium on cereals and dairy products have in the 1990’ties been higher than required, but in re-cent years the price premium has dropped, leading to low profitability,... |

Energy production and energy use in organic agriculture (OA) need to be addressed in order to reduce the reliance on non-renewable fossil fuels and minimize greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. Thus, there is an obligation to find consensus between the apparent opposing aims of renewable (bio) energy production and soil fertility in OA. This project aims at designing and evaluate a combined concept for biomass and bio-energy production in OA, while considering soil fertility. |

This study examines a possible relationship between the economic key data of dairy farms and the family members’ subjective assessment of their perceived quality of life. Seven organic dairy farms were evaluated as part of the on-going project, “Integrative assessment of ecological, economic and social-ethic characteristics of sustainability of agricultural production systems in dairy farming”. Total costs, entrepreneurial profit and return on labour were chosen as key data for rentability. Job satisfaction, wealth in time and health were selected to describe the quality of life. The results confirm that bigger farms with more dairy cows operate more cost efficiently, but the farm with the most dairy cows was not the most successful economically. It was... |

Over the past few years, consumers have been increasing their awareness about environmental, health and safety concerns and they have been gradually changing their habits in favor of organic food. In aquaculture sector, the most recent legislative framework regarding the organic production in Europe is the Commission Regulation (EC) 710/2009, where chapter for aquaculture animals include requirement for animal welfare conditions in husbandry and maximum stocking densities. In Italy, only ten farms are involved in the supply of certified organic fish and only some pilot projects were carried out for organic farming of different species. Therefore, the purpose of this research was to define or verify the principal standards for organic seabass farming,... |
