Small psittacids remain unrecorded as dispersal agents of palm fruits in Brazil. I record here the plain parakeet (Brotogeris tirica), an Atlantic forest endemic, feeding on and dispersing the fruits of the palm Syagrus romanzoffiana at Ubatuba, northern coast of São Paulo, Southeastern Brazil. The birds removed the fruit and carried it away from the mother-tree in about 40% of the feeding records. While perched on trees and shrubs of the understorey, the parakeets removed and ingested most of the mesocarp, dropping the partly consumed fruit. As the parakeets damaged no the embryo and may feed at a distance from the mother-tree, they act as primary dispersal agents. Depuis 1988, d'importantes mortalités de palourdes japonaises Ruditapes philippinarum ont été enregistrées, sur de nombreux élevages, dans le bassin d'Arcachon. Pour expliquer celles-ci, l'hypothèse d'une prédation par la dorade royale Sparus aurata et par le baliste Balistes capriscus était avancée. Afin de la vérifier, une étude expérimentale de la prédation de la palourde par ces deux poissons a été réalisée en laboratoire. Si les relations taille prédateurs-taille proies sont plus marquées chez le baliste, les deux espèces sont particulièrement voraces, puisqu'elles s'avéraient capables de consommer, en 24 h, 500 petits naissains et 350 jeunes palourdes de 25 mm de longueur, 50 % à 70 % des proies étant consommés au cours des 6 premières heures.... |

Identifying the factors driving community dynamics in hydrothermal vent communities, and in particular biological interactions, is challenged by our ability to make direct observations and the difficulty to conduct experiments in those remote ecosystems. The capability of turbots to use self-feeders was studied using 3 groups of 100 juveniles. Feeding activity reached a plateau after 20 days. Almost all feeding activity was observed during the photophase, and the acrophase was associated with dawn. The proportion of nocturnal demands was the highest in the replicate with the lowest feed efficiency, suggesting that feed waste was mainly occurring during nocturnal feeding activity. During the last 30 days of the experiment, demands were only rewarded during two periods of 2.5 h.day(-1). The present study examined the kinematic patterns of initial food uptake, food transport, pharyngeal packing and swallowing in the common musk turtle Sternotherus odoratus. These data are supplemented by morphological descriptions of the skull and the hyolingual complex. Although the hyoid is mainly cartilaginous, S. odoratus still use exclusively hydrodynamic mechanisms in prey capture and prey transport. The tongue is relatively small, with weakly developed intrinsic musculature. We propose that the elasticity of the hypoglossum and the hyoid body impacts the capability of S. odoratus to suction feed, but allows these turtles to effectively re-position the food items within the oropharyngeal cavity during transport, manipulation and pharyngeal packing.... |

Ascia monuste Godart, known as the kale caterpillar, has a specialized diet on Brassicaceae and represents one of the main herbivores of this family in the Neotropical region. The objective of the present study was to determine the performance and oviposition preference of A. monuste for common kale Brassica oleracea (Brassicaceae, var. acephala) of different ages. The parameters used to assess performance were time to pupation and emergence, emergence rate, digestive indices, relative consumption and growth rates, number of eggs per female, hatching rate, and weight of the imagoes. We studied a specialised assemblage of sand-dwelling fish species from a streamlet in central Amazonia. The five sanddwelling species comprised 15.2 % of the total number in the streamlet (33 species). Two of the sand-dwellers are daytime foragers, Characidium cf. pteroides (Crenuchidae) and Stauroglanis gouldingi (Trichomycteridae), whereas three ones are night-time foragers, Gymnorhamphichthys rondoni (Rhamphichthyidae), "Imparfinis" pristos and Mastiglanis asopos (Heptapteridae).
