Single large or several small? The influence of prey size on feeding performance of Philodryas nattereri (Squamata: Serpentes) Biological Sciences

This study aimed at evaluating the energetic return and feeding time on Philodryas nattereri kept in captivity. Snakes were fed biweekly for 60 days (four feeding trials), in two different feeding treatments (single and multiple prey items). The energetic return revealed no significant difference between the feeding treatments; however, we found a negative relationship between snake size and prey handling time during a feed using multiple prey items. In P. nattereri, when large preys are as easy to find as small ones, there seems to be no difference in energetic return.

Activity, habitat utilization, feeding behaviour, and diet of the sand moray Gymnothorax ocellatus (Anguilliformes, Muraenidae) in the South western Atlantic. The sand moray Gymnothorax ocellatus is a nocturnal predator from the western South Atlantic that actively forages on the bottom, preying mostly on crustaceans (mainly shrimps and crabs) and ray-finned fishes, which are located primarily by the sense of smell. The individuals stay stationary during the day, almost always being hidden in individual tunnels dug by animals other than the morays in the muddy sand bottom.

The parakeet Brotogeris tirica feeds on and disperses the fruits of the palm Syagrus romanzoffiana in Southeastern Brazil Biota Neotropica

Small psittacids remain unrecorded as dispersal agents of palm fruits in Brazil. I record here the plain parakeet (Brotogeris tirica), an Atlantic forest endemic, feeding on and dispersing the fruits of the palm Syagrus romanzoffiana at Ubatuba, northern coast of São Paulo, Southeastern Brazil. The birds removed the fruit and carried it away from the mother-tree in about 40% of the feeding records. While perched on trees and shrubs of the understorey, the parakeets removed and ingested most of the mesocarp, dropping the partly consumed fruit. As the parakeets damaged no the embryo and may feed at a distance from the mother-tree, they act as primary dispersal agents. Etude expérimentale de la prédation de la palourde japonaise, Ruditapes philippinarum, par la dorade royale, Sparus aurata, et le baliste, Balistes capriscus ArchiMer

Depuis 1988, d'importantes mortalités de palourdes japonaises Ruditapes philippinarum ont été enregistrées, sur de nombreux élevages, dans le bassin d'Arcachon. Pour expliquer celles-ci, l'hypothèse d'une prédation par la dorade royale Sparus aurata et par le baliste Balistes capriscus était avancée. Afin de la vérifier, une étude expérimentale de la prédation de la palourde par ces deux poissons a été réalisée en laboratoire. Si les relations taille prédateurs-taille proies sont plus marquées chez le baliste, les deux espèces sont particulièrement voraces, puisqu'elles s'avéraient capables de consommer, en 24 h, 500 petits naissains et 350 jeunes palourdes de 25 mm de longueur, 50 % à 70 % des proies étant consommés au cours des 6 premières heures....

Can turbot, Psetta maxima, be fed with self-feeders? ArchiMer

The capability of turbots to use self-feeders was studied using 3 groups of 100 juveniles. Feeding activity reached a plateau after 20 days. Almost all feeding activity was observed during the photophase, and the acrophase was associated with dawn. The proportion of nocturnal demands was the highest in the replicate with the lowest feed efficiency, suggesting that feed waste was mainly occurring during nocturnal feeding activity. During the last 30 days of the experiment, demands were only rewarded during two periods of 2.5 h.day(-1). Feed efficiency was improved and was homogeneous between the three tanks, but the voluntary feed intake was reduced. Novel observations underlying the fast growth of suspension-feeding shellfish in turbid environments: Mytilus edulis ArchiMer

For the tirst time for any benthic filter-feeder, this study documents each component process of nutrient acquisition through natural tidal variations of food availabillty. The organic content of seston available during both neap and spring tides in the bay of Marennes-Oléron. France, decreased from 28 to 8 % with mcreasing seston concentration from 10 to about 90 mg total particulate mass 1(1). Throughout this tidal variation, the blue mussel Mylilus edulis L. cleared more water of particles as seston availability increased. Rejection of fillered material as pseudofaeces prior to ingestion remained a constant fraction of about 0 .93 x the mass of filtered material, so that ingestion rate showed no signs of stabilising at even the highest food...

Early weaning of marine fish larvae onto microdiets: Constraints and perspectives ArchiMer

Weaning small sized marine fish larvae at first feeding directly onto compound pellets is still difficult, while good results can be obtained when used in combination with live prey or when a prefeeding period on live prey is provided up to a size of about 2-3 mg. Microdiets are generally well ingested as their acceptability and visual detection may be improved using feeding activators and increasing good perception contrast. In theory, food may be processed to have a correct nutritional balance, selection of high digestible components is very important as larval digestive system is not fully functional during the first 2 or 3 weeks of life.

Manipulation of dietary conditions for maximal growth in mussels, Mytilus edulis, from the Marennes-Oléron Bay, France ArchiMer

Results are presented from laboratory-based experiments in which we investigated short-term responses of Mytilus edulis L. to experimental changes in the amount and composition of suspended seston. Working with large quantities of cultured algae, we have studied feeding behaviour over ranges of food availability and quality that ex tend weil beyond earlier limits. Findings confirm the ability of mussels to selectively reject inorganic particles as pseudofaeces prior to ingestion, thereby enriching the organic content of ingested matter by 30% more than the organic content of natural filtered seston. A simple way of avoiding feed wastage in European seabass, Dicentrarchus labrax, under self-feeding conditions ArchiMer

Self-feeding systems allow fish to freely express feeding activity. A simple rod at the water surface can act as a trigger and provide fish with a way of obtaining pellets from a feeder. Such a rod presented to experienced European seabass, Dicentrarchus labrax, may lead to feed wastage, probably as a result of unintentional fish contacts with the trigger. Trigger protection screens have been designed to prevent fish contacting the trigger by chance, and the efficacy of such screens was tested. Structure and function of the feeding apparatus in the common musk turtle Sternotherus odoratus (Chelonia, Kinosternidae) Naturalis

The present study examined the kinematic patterns of initial food uptake, food transport, pharyngeal packing and swallowing in the common musk turtle Sternotherus odoratus. These data are supplemented by morphological descriptions of the skull and the hyolingual complex. Although the hyoid is mainly cartilaginous, S. odoratus still use exclusively hydrodynamic mechanisms in prey capture and prey transport. The tongue is relatively small, with weakly developed intrinsic musculature. We propose that the elasticity of the hypoglossum and the hyoid body impacts the capability of S. odoratus to suction feed, but allows these turtles to effectively re-position the food items within the oropharyngeal cavity during transport, manipulation and pharyngeal packing....

Ascia monuste Godart, known as the kale caterpillar, has a specialized diet on Brassicaceae and represents one of the main herbivores of this family in the Neotropical region. The objective of the present study was to determine the performance and oviposition preference of A. monuste for common kale Brassica oleracea (Brassicaceae, var. acephala) of different ages. The parameters used to assess performance were time to pupation and emergence, emergence rate, digestive indices, relative consumption and growth rates, number of eggs per female, hatching rate, and weight of the imagoes. We studied a specialised assemblage of sand-dwelling fish species from a streamlet in central Amazonia. The five sanddwelling species comprised 15.2 % of the total number in the streamlet (33 species). Two of the sand-dwellers are daytime foragers, Characidium cf. pteroides (Crenuchidae) and Stauroglanis gouldingi (Trichomycteridae), whereas three ones are night-time foragers, Gymnorhamphichthys rondoni (Rhamphichthyidae), "Imparfinis" pristos and Mastiglanis asopos (Heptapteridae).
