Current experiment was undertaken during 6 weeks with Nile tilapia, Oreochomis niloticus, fingerlings (1.28 ± 0.03 g) to assess the effects of moderate Na2CO3 liming on water quality and fish growth performance. Twenty-four 25 L-aquaria, with 15 fish per aquarium, were used, of which twelve aquaria were placed in the lab’s indoor room and twelve in the outdoor area. Two types of water (clear or green) and three different water-quality managements (none, HCl acidification and Na2CO3 liming) were simultaneously evaluated in a 3 x 2 factorial design. Total ammonia, calcium hardness, pH and total alkalinity in the green water aquaria were significantly higher than rates in the clear water aquaria. Slight liming acid water with Na2CO3 did not produce... |

The aim of the present work was to answer the following question: can a small change in the tilapia’s on-going feeding strategy impair its growth? In the initial phase of the study, fish were evenly distributed and maintained for two weeks in four tanks. In tanks 1 and 2, the ration was given in three equal meals at 8, 12 and 16h or at 9, 13 and 17h, respectively. In tanks 3 and 4, there was only one daily meal at 9 or 10 o’clock, respectively. In the second 8-week phase, fish from tank 1 were distributed into two groups in ten 100-L tanks: the 8-12-16 group, in which fish were always fed at 8, 12 and 16h; and the 8-12-16/9-13-17 group, in which fish were fed at 8, 12 and 16h in the first four weeks and at 9, 13 and 17h in the last four weeks. Fish from... |

The objective of this study was to evaluate the effect of different feed management on the quality of effluent water generated in Nile tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus) culture ponds. Feed was supplied as follows: natural food, and pelleted, extruded or minced ration. The study was conducted during 19 weeks in 12 continuous water exchange ponds of 300 m² each, with a population of male Nile tilapia juveniles, in a density equal to 1.7 fish m-2. Feeds contained 30% crude protein, 3,000 kcal digestible energy, and were supplied twice a day. Natural food consisted of chicken manure. Temperature, dissolved oxygen, pH, total phosphorus, total nitrogen, chlorophyll a and suspended solids were monitored weekly in the supplying and effluent water. Water residence... |

The aim of the present study was to determine the effects of waterborne un-ionized ammonia (NH3) on the survival and growth of silver catfish (Rhamdia quelen). Juveniles were exposed to 0.10, 0.22, and 0.42mg L-1 NH3 at pH 8.2 for 45 days. After 15 days, a significant mortality rate (33%) was observed in the fish exposed to 0.42mg L-1 NH3. After 20 days, 23% and 43% mortality (both significant) was observed in fish exposed to 0.22 and 0.42mg L-1 NH3, respectively. A significant negative relationship between survival, length, daily weight gain, standard growth rate, and biomass of juveniles of silver catfish per tank with waterborne NH3 levels was found at the end of the experiment. The resulting survival and waterborne NH3 relationship indicated that, to... |

ABSTRACT: The growth of cachama hybrids, cachamoto (Colossoma macropomum ♀ x Piaractus brachypomus ♂) and cachamay (P. brachypomus ♀ x C. macropomum ♂) was compared for 154 days to determine which showed the better productivity. The experiment was carried out in three earth ponds, each divided transversely with a plastic net, yielding six experimental units. Juveniles of cachamoto of 12.95±2.43g and 6.75±0.42cm and cachamay of 16.65±3.64g and 7.41±0.62cm were distributed in each sub-tank of 240m2 at a density of 0.5 fish m-2. Fish were fed twice daily except on days when their weight and length, and the physical and chemical parameters of the water were measured. The following productive variables were evaluated: growth in weight and length, daily weight... |
