Crown of Thorns Starfish in the Western Indian Ocean OceanDocs
Schleyer, M..
Increasing numbers of crown-of-thorns starfish (COTs) Acanthaster planci are being found in the Indo-Pacific region (Engelhard 1996, Lassig and Engelhard 1994, Stump 1996). However, there appears to be a gap in the information presented by Lassig and Engelhard (1996) for the Western Indian Ocean (WIO). The Oceanographic Research Institute (ORI) in Durban has been involved in coral reef research in a number of areas in the WIO during this decade and has encountered COTs outbreaks since September 1994. The following brief account summarizes these observations.

Environments of the Black-chinned Tilapia, Sarotherodon Melanotheron, and Their Potential Effects on the Genetic Structure of Stocks in Ghana OceanDocs
Abban, E.K.; Asante, A.K.; Falk, T.M..
Ghana is one of the countries bordering theAtlantic Ocean on the coast of Africa. The country is located between latitudes 5" N and11" N and longitudes 1" E and 3" W Thecoastline of Ghana, approximately 550 kmlong, is dotted with about 50 lagoons andestuaries that, together with rocky capes and avariety of sandy bays, constitute its coastalwetlands (Armah 1993). These lagoons, estuaries and associated floodplains providehabitats for a variety of wildlife including birdsand fishes (Ntiamoa-Baidu 1991). With an estimated 40 000 ha surface area, the lagoonsare important fish and fisheries resources forassociated communities. The fish speciescomposition of these lagoons varies slightly, but a constant and predominant species is theblack-chinned tilapia,...

WIOMSA Newsbrief OceanDocs
Coelacanth has, for the first time, been found to occur off the Tanzanian coast. On the 9 September 2003, Coelacanth was caught by a fisher off Songo Mnara Island in Kilwa. The fish was caught in a net at a depth of 100m, which is only a few hundred meters from shore. The coelacanth, 132cm long and weighing 40 kilogrammes, was first kept at the Marine Parks and Reserves Unit in Dar es Salaam for processing before it is preserved and put on display at the National Museum in Dar es Salaam for public viewing. No coelacanth had ever before been recorded in Tanzanian African waters, so this was a very good find. And it came only few weeks after the Tanzanian Government through its National Coelacanth Committee hosted a research and training ship MV FRS ALGOA at...

A Simple Non-Parametric Gis Model For Predicting Species Distribution: Endemic Birds In Bioko Island OceanDocs
Fa, J.E.; Lenton, S.M.; Del Val, J.P..
Species mapping is a useful conservation tool for predicting patterns of biological diversity, or identifying geographical areas of conservation significance. Mapping can also improve our understanding of the appropriateness of habitat areas for individual species. We developed a new model, PREDICT, for mapping habitat suitability of plant and animal species from incomplete field survey data. PREDICT is a statistical program written for use within a GIS (geographic information system). It produces images and statistics that assess the potential of unstudied areas for wildlife for which presence/absence data and basic habitat information are available. Suitability for a target species is determined within surveyed and non-surveyed squares by a form of...

A Sea Change : Exotics In The Eastern Mediterranean OceanDocs
Galil, B.S.; Zenetos, A..
The eastern Mediterranean is susceptible to biological invasions because of its placement between the Atlantic, Pontic and Erythrean regions, busy maritime traffic, and lagoons and bays that are crowded with fish and shellfish farms. However, the greatest influx of invaders resulted from the opening of the Suez Canal in 1869, which allowed entry of Indo-Pacific and Erythrean biota. Exotic macro phytes, invertebrates and fish are found in most coastal habitats in the eastern Mediterranean. Some invaders have outcompeted or replaced native species locally, some are considered pests or cause nuisance, whereas other invaders are of commercial value. However, at variance with other invaded seas, the invasion into the eastern Mediterranean has increased the...

First record of the Rubber-lip grunt Plectorhinchus mediterraneus (Guichenot 1850) (Osteichthyes: Haemulidae) in Tunisian waters (Central Mediterranean) OceanDocs
Hattour, A.; Bradai, M. N..

Ouattara, T.A.S.; Atsé, B.C..

Opportunities and strategies for conservation of fish genetic resources in Cote d'Ivoire OceanDocs
Yapi-Gnaoré, V.; Da Costa, K.S.; Kouassi, N.C.; Dembele, I..
Cote d'Ivoire has a diverse ichthyological fauna. About 173 species of fish from 27 families and 67 genera are represented in the different rivers and lacustrine systems. Around 60 species are harvested by artisanal fishing. Less than 10 are used in aquaculture. Strategies need to be developed to preserve these diverse fish populations in both natural and artificial waterbodies. Cote d'Ivoire is watered by four main rivers. These are, from west to east, Cavally (600 km), Sassandra (650 km), Bandama (1050 km) and Comoe (1 100 km). A group of small coastal rivers composed of San Pedro (112 km), Boubo (130 km), Me (140 km), Agnebi (250 km) and Bia (290 km), among others, loca ted in the forest zone, are distributed throughout the southern region. Tributaries...

Short-term variability in alongshore winds and temperature off Swakopmund, Namibia, during a non-upwelling event in 1998-1999. OceanDocs
Bartholomae, Ch.; Hagen, E..
Swakopmund is a popular coastal resort in Namibia, especially during the summer holiday season when daily sea temperatures can fluctuate several degrees in a short period. Hourly measurements of the nearbottom water temperature were collected off the Swakopmund Jetty to investigate the thermal variability in relation to local winds. The thermal regime of this coastal region appears to be controlled by the locally forced Ekman offshore transport. Related changes in offshore transport led those of the surf-zone temperature by about one day. A transfer of kinetic energy from the alongshore wind into the temperature field of the nearshore zone dominated relative short time scales (hourly). The longer periods (7–9 days) are associated with the forcing of...

OceanDocs
Ouattara, T.A.S.; Adepo-Gouréné, A.B.; Atsé, B.C..

Major Fishes of West African Coastal Waters and Their Morphological Characterization, with Emphasis on Sarotherodon melanotheron Teleostei, Cichlidae) OceanDocs
Falk, T.M.; Teugels, G.G..
The West African coastal zone is rich in estuaries and lagoons. Estuaries are abundant in the area from the mouth of Senegal to Guinea (e.g., Sine Saloum, Casamance); lagoons are generally present from Cote d'Ivoire to the Niger Delta in Nigeria (e.g., Ebrie Lagoon, Porto Novo Lagoon, Lagos Lagoon). Because of their important diversity, it is difficult to give their physical and biological definitions. They are all, however, characterized by a typical and rich fish species composition
