Prestes, Luiza; Oliveira, Marcos Sidney Brito; Tavares-Dias, Marcos; Soares, Maria Gercilia Mota; Cunha, Fabiana Calacina.
The present study estimated parameters of the length-weight relationship (LWR) and allometric condition factor for eight fish species from the upper Araguari River, in the State of Amapá, Brazil. A total of 615 fish of eight species were analyzed: Acestrorhynchus falcatus, A. falcirostris, Ageneiosus inermis, Hemiodus unimaculatus, Hoplias aimara, Myloplus asterias, M. ternetzi and Tometes trilobatus. The allometric condition factor varied from 0.742 to 1.435. The coefficient of allometry ranged from 2.723 to 3.225. The coefficient of determination (R2) of the LWR ranged from 0.742 to 0.985. This is the first estimate of the length-weight relationship for fish from the Araguari River and the first record of these parameters for Myloplus ternetzi and...

Les campagnes de chalutages expérimentaux en mer du Nord ArchiMer
Verin, Yves.
Since 1976, France participates to the International Bottom Trawl Survey (IBTS), coordinated by the International Council for Exploration of the Sea (ICES). The main objective of these surveys, which are carried out on board of research vessels, was to obtain annual forecasts of recruitment for the various commercial fish species of the North Sea. These estimates were used by ICES Working Groups to assess these various stocks and to propose management measures for the following year. In addition, the data collected during these surveys concerned biological and abundance analysis of main commercial fish species exploited by European countries in the North Sea. The results of studies were published in scientific papers and have improved knowledge in this...

Combined effects of exploitation and temperature on fish stocks in the Northeast Atlantic ArchiMer
Rouyer, Tristan; Fromentin, Jean-marc; Hidalgo, Manuel; Stenseth, Nils C..
Fish stock fluctuations are affected by two potentially confounding forces: the removal of individuals by fisheries and climatic variations affecting the productivity of fish populations. Disentangling the relative importance of these forces has thus been a question of primary importance for fisheries management and conservation. Through the analysis of long-term time-series for 27 fish stocks from the Northeast Atlantic, the present study shows that the sign and intensity of the effect of temperature on biomass are dependent on the geographical location: the stocks located at the southernmost and northernmost latitudes of our study displayed stronger associations with temperature than the stocks located in the middle range of latitudes. As a consequence,...

Performance of maximum likelihood mixture models to estimate nursery habitat contributions to fish stocks: a case study on sea bream Sparus aurata ArchiMer
Niklitschek, Edwin J.; Darnaude, Audrey M..
Background: Mixture models (MM) can be used to describe mixed stocks considering three sets of parameters: the total number of contributing sources, their chemical baseline signatures and their mixing proportions. When all nursery sources have been previously identified and sampled for juvenile fish to produce baseline nursery-signatures, mixing proportions are the only unknown set of parameters to be estimated from the mixed-stock data. Otherwise, the number of sources, as well as some/all nursery-signatures may need to be also estimated from the mixed-stock data. Our goal was to assess bias and uncertainty in these MM parameters when estimated using unconditional maximum likelihood approaches (ML-MM), under several incomplete sampling and...

Towards the development of environmental indices for the Namibian shelf, with particular reference to fisheries management. OceanDocs
Bartholomae, Ch.; Van der Plas, A..
The Namibian Ministry of Fisheries and Marine Resources has the task of collecting and providing relevant oceanographic information for management of their fisheries. However, quality information is difficult to provide because of the complexity of the processes involved in the Namibian marine ecosystem. Nonetheless, there are oceanographic data available that can contribute to fisheries management by improving the general understanding of important oceanographic processes related to fisheries. The focus of this paper is on the development of simple environmental indices that can serve as a measurement or proxy of the state or intensity of certain important oceanographic processes or variables for temporal comparison. These indices relate to oceanographic...

Evaluation et cartographie de l'abondance du stock de la sardinelle ronde dans la zone Nord Ouest Africaine OceanDocs
Ould Isselmou, Cheikh Baye.

Inacio, A.; Barros, P.C..

The United Nations Fish Stocks Agreement OceanDocs
Juda, L..
It is generally conceded that world marine fisheries are facing difficult times. Quantitatively world fish catch has levelled off, and qualitatively the portion of total fish catch representing high-quality, high-priced, and high-demand fish stocks is declining. A recent study indicates that fishing effort is proceeding farther down the food chain as the desired species at the top of that chain are becoming less abundant.1 While there is some discussion as to whether and to what degree the problem is due to natural causes such as El Niño or to anthropogenic causes such as overfishing and habitat destruction, it is clear that in many cases overfishing, associated with modern technology, increased effort, and open access, has been a significant contributor...
