Soaking curve and effect of temperature on the germination of daisy seeds Horticultura Brasileira
Pêgo,Rogério G; Grossi,José Antônio S; Barbosa,José Geraldo.
The soaking curve and the effect of temperature on the germination of daisy seeds (Chrysanthemum leucanthemum) were characterized in this study. To determine the soaking curve, four samples of 0.5 g of seeds were soaked in germitest paper moistened with distilled water and maintained in germinator at 25ºC. The seeds were weighed in periods of 0, 3, 6, 9, 12, 24, 36, 48, 60, 72, 84 and 96 hours using a precision digital balance of 0.0001 g. A triphasic pattern germination curve was adjusted, allowing the determination of the beginning and duration of the phase II of the germination process. The germination test was carried out with four replications of 50 seeds disposed in "Gerbox" boxes and placed in germinators at the temperatures of 20, 25, 30 or...

Fertigation and growing media for production of anthurium cut flower Horticultura Brasileira
Cuquel,Francine Lorena; Polack,Simone W; Favaretto,Nerilde; Possamai,João Carlos.
Anthurium andraeanum flowers quality and productivity depend on the fertilizer, and the growing media used. Most Brazilian anthurium growers use to prepare their growing media, but they do not realize that the low quality and productivity might come from an inadequate mix that they are using. So, the objective was to determine yield and flower quality of anthurium plants grown in different growing media and fertilizations. 'Eidibel' anthurium plants were grown in: a) pine bark + composted organic matter (1:1); b) wood shavings + composted organic matter (1:1); c) growing media usually utilized by the grower where this study was developed (a mixture of soil, coal residue and composted cow manure). Four fertigation solutions were applied weekly during eleven...

Battistus,A.G.; Klein,J.; Costa,N.V.; Guimarães,V.F.; Hoffmann,V..
Species of the orchidaceae family are grown for marketing flowers and among them the genus Cattleya stands out. However, due to its slow growth, the substrate is subjected to weed infestation. Therefore, this study aims to evaluate the selectivity and efficiency of herbicides in controlling Pilea microphylla in Cattleya orchid seedlings (Cattleya tenebrosa x Cattleya leopoldy). We used a completely randomized design with four replications. The evaluated herbicides were oxyfluorfen (0, 120, 240 and 480 g ha-1), flumioxazin (0, 12.5, 25 and 40 g ha-1), nicosulfuron (0, 20, 40 and 80 g ha-1) mesotrione (0, 96, 144 and 192 g ha-1), clethodim (0, 60, 84 and 108 g ha-1) and metsulfuron-methyl (0, 1.2, 1.8 and 2.4 g ha-1). At post-emergence applying time, the...

Weed Management and Herbicide Selectivity in Ornamental Plants Planta Daninha
MARTINS,D.; MARTINS,C.C.; SILVA JR.,A.C..
ABSTRACT: Floriculture and landscaping sector has the same problems as other crops regarding weed management. Weeds affect the yield and quality of the harvested product, in which the visual aspect and aesthetics stand out as the most important factors in flower production and landscaping. Weed control in floriculture and landscaping is critical and costly because maintaining the beauty of the product and the use of herbicides is a low-cost management tool compared to manual management. However, it implies knowing herbicide selectivity, as ornamental species may present some injury depending on the active ingredient and the degree of selectivity of the compound. Because the use of this practice in flower production and landscaping both abroad and mainly in...

Economies of Scale in the Floriculture Industry AgEcon
Schumacher, Sara K.; Marsh, Thomas L..
This study investigated the cost structure of the floriculture industry in the United States. Economies of scale and input elasticities were estimated with a normalized quadratic cost function. Results suggest that economies of scale exist in the floriculture industry. As producers become large and more automated, they have a cost advantage relative to smaller producers who are producing the same output product mix. The existence of economies of scale suggests that average grower size can increase in the future as growers increase in size to take advantage of cost efficiencies.

The Green Industry Today - Some Issues and Future Prospects AgEcon
Johnson, Doyle C.; Christensen, Robert L..
Green industry sales are projected to total $40.4 billion in 1994. The industry ranked sixth in 1991 among farm commodity groups in total cash receipts, and over the past decade total receipts increased 10 percent per year. Net income per farm is the highest of all the commodity groups. Nevertheless, the sector has received scant federal support compared to other commodities. In spite of growth and significance, economic analysis and data availability and reliability have been limited. There is clear justification for increased efforts in data collection and economic analysis of this industry’s problems.

Productores de flor de corte de la comunidad de Francisco Zarco, en el municipio de Tenancingo, Estado de México: ¿Un caso exitoso de acción colectiva? AgEcon
Gonzalez, D.I.S.; Gonzalez, D.J.G.; Garcia, V.R.; Ramirez, H.J.J..
The idea of territory comprises a complex relationships net, its dynamics is understood by the geographical proximity, the rural agroindustry organization (AIR) and the way in which all of them are related with territory external actors. Despite the fact that between territory actors exist differences, collective action theory focuses on the actor´s capacity to group in order to reach common goals, and from these goals, manage their resources, creating opportunities and/or benefits for the group; the success or failure of collective action strategies depends on internal or external factors and it also depends on the context in terms of territory. The presence of trust and cooperation favors the structural collective action and may promote an increase in...

The Effect of Information on Consumer Preferences of Indoor Plants AgEcon
Solano, Alexis; House, Lisa; Gao, Zhifeng.
This study primarily focuses on the effect of information on consumers’ purchasing behavior. If consumers are provided with information about a specific product they may change their beliefs about that product. This distribution of information may lead the consumer to make the decision either to purchase or not purchase, or the consumer may increase or decrease the amount he or she is willing to pay. Here, the impact of information about indoor plants’ ability to reduce indoor air pollution on participants is analyzed. This research will add to the literature on consumer behavior and will also benefit the floriculture industry within the state of Florida. Florida’s floriculture sales have fluctuated during the last ten years. From 2000 to 2003 the...

Rodrigues,Donizetti Tomaz; Novais,Roberto Ferreira; Alvarez V,Víctor Hugo; Dias,José Maria Moreira; Villani,Ecila Mercês de Albuquerque.
In the best cultivation methods of orchids, in particular of the genus Phalaenopsis, liming is a common practice. The objective of this study was to evaluate the influence of lime rates (0.0; 1.0; 2.0; 3.0; 4.0; and 5.0 g dm-3 of substrate) applied to the cultivation substrate (xaxim) on the growth of Epidendrum ibaguense seedlings. In a greenhouse, 1-L plastic pots filled with 0.8 dm³ of xaxim were irrigated such that no leachate was lost during the experiment. N, P, K, Ca, Mg, S, Fe, Zn, B, and Mn contents in roots, stems and leaves were measured. Leachate was collected by applying a sufficient water volume to obtain 25 mL from each pot. Fourteen days after lime application of 3 g dm-3, the pH of the collected leachate reached values above 7 and a value...
