Isolated segments of the perfused rat tail artery display a high basal tone when compared to other isolated arteries such as the mesenteric and are suitable for the assay of vasopressor agents. However, the perfusion of this artery in the entire tail has not yet been used for functional studies. The main purpose of the present study was to identify some aspects of the vascular reactivity of the rat tail vascular bed and validate this method to measure vascular reactivity. The tail severed from the body was perfused with Krebs solution containing different Ca2+ concentrations at different flow rates. Rats were anesthetized with sodium pentobarbital (65 mg/kg) and heparinized (500 U). The tail artery was dissected near the tail insertion, cannulated and... |

ABSTRACT The use of tools such as process capability index for irrigation aims to observe how this irrigation is adequate in terms of quality. The aim of the study was analyzing the Christiansen uniformity coefficient and the flow of a drip irrigation system with self-compensating emitters under water different salt concentrations, using the process capability index. The research was conducted in a greenhouse at the Federal University of Campina Grande (UFCG). The experimental design was a randomized block in a factorial 5 x 2 with three replications, the factors consisted of five levels of irrigation water salinity (CEw) (0.6, 1.5, 2.5, 3.5 and 4.5 dS m−1 at 25°C) and two running times (0 and 350 hours of operation). The Christiansen uniformity... |

A long-term water quality monitoring program has been established in the Virginian waters of the Chesapeake Bay. To date, over eight years of data have been analyzed to characterize spatio-temporal patterns and long-term trends in water quality. Complementary multivariate statistical procedures were employed to define spatial and seasonal patterns, while a series of non-parametric trend analyses were used for determining overall, site-specific, and season-specific long-term trends for water quality variables in the tributaries and mainstem of the Bay. Particular attention was focused on determining the effect of river flow on the trends, because flow rates in some of the tributaries have changed dramatically since the beginning of the monitoring program.... |

Long term trends in the phytoplankton of the lower Chesapeake Bay were identified using flow corrected and uncorrected data sets, with 22 of 23 significant trends similar under both conditions. The major trends between 1985-1992 were for: 1) reduced phytoplankton concentrations; 2) decreasing numbers of phytoplankton taxa during spring, summer and fall months; and 3) seasonally mixed trends for diatom abundance in waters below the pycnocline, with spring months having decreasing densities, and increasing abundance trends in November and December. The flow patterns had different effects on the trends. Flow diminished the magnitude of the trends for total phytplankton concentrations, so these trends were greater in the flow corrected data. There were mixed... |

Measurements of hydrodynamic conditions and vertical suspended sediment concentration profiles, C-profiles, have been obtained above rippled sandy beds in a large wave flume. Measured values of wave height and period, water depth and sediment properties are used in well-known formulae to predict sediment dynamics and bed shear stresses due to waves. These data are then used in an existing convective model and a new model to predict C-profiles. Measured C-profiles and C-profiles predicted by the new model are shown to agree well for a range of grain sizes and wave conditions. Grain-scale bed roughness, defined using data from the model, is found to vary with the wave mobility number. Values for the wave mixing coefficient derived using the new model are... |

Plant cover plays an essential role in the maintenance and balance of the hydrological cycle, performing functions in the control of water availability, which guarantee flow permanence. The use of mathematical models is an alternative to represent the hydrological system and help in the understanding of phenomena involving the variables of the water cycle, in order to anticipate and predict impacts from potential changes in land use. In the present study, the hydrological model SWAT (Soil and Water Assessment Tool) was used to analyse the dynamics of flow and water flow in the Pará River Basin, Minas Gerais, Brazil, aiming to evaluate the impact caused by changes in land use in water availability. The adjusted model was assessed by the coefficient of... |
