Benthic communities of the Río de la Plata estuary and their trophic link with Micropogonias furnieri, Paralonchurus brasiliensis, Menticirrhus americanus, Cynoscion guatucupa, Macrodon ancylodon and Umbrina canosai, six species of the Sciaenidae Family, were studied. Benthic composition was characterized using 122 sampling sites between 1999 and 2005. Multivariate and univariate statistical tools were used to analyze diversity, abundance and biomass patterns. A total of 370 taxa were found at the study area. Four areas were established using benthic composition: Inner Río de la Plata (RdP), middle RdP, outer RdP and Marine zone. Higher abundance (9,877 ind/m2) and biomass (1,456.8 g/m2) values were found at middle RdP. Nephtys fluviatilis, Heteromastus... |

Feeding of Argentine hake during winter 1994, between 50 and 370 m of depth, in the studied area (34°50'-47°S), is based on the consumption of zooplanktonic crustaceans, fishes and cephalopods. Maximum feeding incidence is found at 36°-40°S (51. ), in sea layer of 80-130 m deep (62. ) and between 8:00-10:00 hours (36,6. ). Cluster analysis shows five spatial groups, with similar length distributions and characteristic principal prey items combination. The males of all sizes show a trend to feed on euphausids and hiperiids amphipods. The females eat more quantities of hake, short fin squid and other fishes. There is a change in diet related with predator size, from 47 cm TL onwards for males, and from 53 cm TL for females. This change consists in a decrease... |

The effect of three dietary ascorbic acid (AA) concentrations, each applied via two feed types, on production characteristics and physiological condition of African catfish (<i>Clarius gariepinus</i>) larvae has been assessed in two 10-day culture trials. Three treatments received only <i>Artemia</i> nauplii enriched with an experimental emulsion containing 0, 10 or 20% ascorbyl palmitate (AP) and yielding 530, 1200 and 1600 µg AA g-1 DW <i>Artemia</i> , respectively; the other three treatments were fed the same <i>Artemia</i> diets which were partially substituted by an artificial diet containing no vitamin C (ratio 20:80). No differences in survival could be observed: however, from... |
