Design and construction of a mechanized charcoal-fueled corn roaster CIGR Journal
Sobowale, Sunday; Omotoso, Oluwole; Olatidoye, Olawale; Olayanju, Adeniyi; Mulaba-Bafubiandi, Antoine.
The economic situation in most developing countries has left farmers and processors operating at small scale and under unhygienic environment. The productivity is often too low to justify labor and time investment. With respect to the challenges particularly associated with roasting of corn, a roaster was designed, constructed and its performance evaluated. The mechanized charcoal fuelled corn roaster consists of a frame, roasting unit, charcoal tray, air blowing unit and a power transmission system. The functional efficiency of the machine at different roasting temperatures of 100, 130 and 150 oC ranged between 88 and 94%, while the roasting capacity and roasting time ranged between 40 and 54 fresh corns per hour in 22 and 30 min, respectively. The...

Profiling Agricultural Engineering Technologies for Mechanizing Smallholder Agriculture in Uganda CIGR Journal
Wanyama, Joshua.
Developing countries are grappling with numerous challenges including feeding rapidly growing populations, alleviating poverty, protecting the environment and mitigating adverse impacts of climate change. For the coming years, one of the main agricultural development agenda for Sub-Saharan Africa (SSA) should be to increase agricultural productivity and production to achieve food security through agricultural mechanization with Agricultural Engineering Technologies (AETs) as major inputs. However, there is paucity of information on the status of existing AETs and their contribution to mechanizing smallholder agriculture which is crucial to effective planning and strategy formulation. Therefore, the overarching objective of this paper is to review past and...

A new N index to assess nitrogen dynamics in potato (Solanum tuberosum L.) production systems of Bolivia Agrociencia
Saavedra,Ana K.; Delgado,Jorge A.; Botello,Ruben; Mamani,Pablo; Alwang,Jeffrey.
Bolivia is South America's poorest country, with over 80 % of the rural population under the poverty line and agricultural productivity is closely inversely correlated with poverty in rural Bolivia. Potato (Solanum tuberosum L.) is one of the most important crops for food security in Bolivia, where it is grown with traditional methods, and national-level yields are low. Traditional management of potato involves use of organic amendments (animal manures) to supply N. Enhanced N management has the potential to raise potato yields and reduce rural poverty, yet there is a lack of information about improving nitrogen management practices in potato production areas where traditional systems predominate. A N index for traditional agricultural systems in Bolivia...

Food quantity and quality of cassava affected by leguminous residues and inorganic nitrogen application in a soil of low natural fertility of the humid tropics Bragantia
Moura-Silva,Aline Gomes; Aguiar,Alana das Chagas Ferreira; Jorge,Neuza; Agostini-Costa,Tânia da Silveira; Moura,Emanoel Gomes.
ABSTRACT The aim of this study was to test the hypothesis that the quality and quantity of biofortified cassava root in a humid tropical environment can be modified with the application of a combination of low- and high-quality residues of leguminous tree species. The experiment was designed as a 6 × 2 factorial (a combination of 4 legume species versus 2 levels of nitrogen) with 4 replications in a randomized block design and the following treatments: Gliricidia + Acacia, Gliricidia + Leucaena, Gliricidia + Clitoria, Leucaena + Acacia, Leucaena + Clitoria, and a control without legumes. We analyzed the shoot weight, number of roots/plant, root weight, root production, proximate composition, as well as the mineral, carotenoid, and pro-vitamin A contents....

ABSTRACT Maize (Zea mays) is considered one of the most important crops for world food security. Globally, Brazil is the second largest maize producer and the fourth largest maize consumer. The climate variables is one of the main determining factors for crop yield. Given the possibility of future climate changes, our objective was to evaluate the impact of climate change on maize crop growth and development, assessed strategies to cope with the future crop andto quantify the impacts on various producing regions of Brazil. The DSSAT/CERES-Maize model was calibrated with field data and then used to simulate current and six future climate scenarios, according to the AgMIP protocols. We selected three regional climate circulation models (GCMs) and two...

Competition with spreading dayflower (Commelina diffusa L.) can affect the agronomic characteristics and mineral content of common bean grains Ciencia e Investigación Agraria
Gomes,Lidiane dos Santos; Pin Dalvi,Leandro; Colodete Altoé,Sabrina; Rocha,Leonardo José Frinhani Noia da; Oliveira,Fabio Luiz de.
Abstract The objective of this study was to evaluate the effects of the presence of Commelina diffusa weeds on the agronomic characteristics and mineral content of bean grains (Phaseolus vulgaris L.). The experiments were conducted using a completely randomized design with five replications in a greenhouse. The treatments consisted of two bean cultivars (BRS Ametista and BRS Estilo) grown in the presence and absence of the weeds. The weeds affected the agronomic and mineral characteristics of the varieties; caused a decrease in the number of leaves; reduced the chlorophyll content in the leaves; and reduced the nitrogen, phosphorus and iron contents in the grains. Competition with spreading dayflower did not cause significant effects on the stem diameter...

Food security and livestock: The case of Latin America and the Caribbean Ciencia e Investigación Agraria
Rodríguez,Diego Ignacio; Anríquez,Gustavo; Riveros,José Luis.
The main hurdle to achieving food security in Latin America and the Caribbean is the inability of many poor families to access the foods necessary for a healthy diet, in a context in which food prices and family incomes are fundamental determinants. Animal husbandry plays a key role in the food security of the region, providing products rich in high-quality proteins and micronutrients and is vital for millions of households that depend on livestock for their livelihoods to generate income and have access to basic services. Furthermore, the production and trade of livestock products contributes to the stabilization of the food supply, acting as a buffer during economic crises and disasters both at the individual and community levels. Small farm agriculture...

Identifying agriculture land acquisitions for alleviating future food security concerns Ciênc. Tecnol. Aliment.
ABDULLAH,Ahsan.
Abstract The total available land for food, fuel, or forests is finite, while land demand is increasing and expected to increase further in the coming decades; resulting in deterioration of food security. Therefore, the corporate world adopted a solution of acquiring international agricultural land. Consequently, the global demand for land has progressively risen, but the question requiring decision support is - which lands to acquire for food production to ensure future food security? Food Science and Technology has vital pivotal roles to play in improving this situation, as food science is inherently multidisciplinary and motivated by the use of new technologies. In this paper, we endeavour to address this multidisciplinary food science question, by...

Edible active coatings incorporated with Cinnamomum cassia and Myristica fragrans essential oils to improve shelf-life of minimally processed apples Ciência Rural
Santos,Sabrina Miqueletti dos; Malpass,Geoffroy Roger Pointer; Okura,Mônica Hitomi; Granato,Ana Claudia.
ABSTRACT: The effect of the incorporation of cinnamon (Cinnamomum cassia) and nut meg (Myristicafragrans) essential oils in alginate-based edible coatings that were applied on minimally processed apples, is reported. The minimum inhibitory concentrations were 1.25mg.mL-1 (cinnamon) and 2.50mg.mL-1 (nutmeg), against both Escherichia coli and Penicillium commune. Over storage periods there was a significant reduction in the E. coli and P. commune counts compared to the control. The extent of enzymatic browning was also significantly reduced in the coated samples. In the coated minimally processed apples sensory tests, the flavor had the lowest rating of the properties analyzed, for both treatments, followed by aroma and firmness.

Social networks are a significant way through which rural communities that manage resources under common property regimes obtain food resources. Previous research on food security and social network analysis has mostly focused on egocentric network data or proxy variables for social networks to explain how social relations contribute to the different dimensions of food security. Whole-network approaches have the potential to contribute to former studies by revealing how individual social ties aggregate into complex structures that create opportunities or constraints to the sharing and distribution of food resources. We used a whole-network approach to investigate the role of network structure in contributing to the four dimensions of food security: food...

Quantifying Biodiversity for Building Resilience for Food Security in Urban Landscapes: Getting Down to Business Ecology and Society
Polasky, Steven; Department of Applied Economics, University of Minnesota ; polasky@umn.edu.
A steady stream of ecosystem services is essential for human welfare and survival, and it has been convincingly shown that these flows are being eroded. Compelling theoretical knowledge about essential connections between ecosystem service generation, biodiversity, and resilience in social-ecological systems already exists; however, we still, to a great extent, lack spatially explicit quantitative assessments for translating this theoretical knowledge into practice. We propose an approach for measuring the change in flow and resilience of a regulating ecosystem service on a landscape scale over time when the landscape is exposed to both land use change due to urban expansion, and change in a large-scale economic driver. Our results quantitatively show...

Small-scale Fisheries Governance and Understanding the Snoek (Thyrsites atun) Supply Chain in the Ocean View Fishing Community, Western Cape, South Africa Ecology and Society
Isaacs, Moenieba; University of Western Cape; misaacs@uwc.ac.za.
Postapartheid fisheries reform in South Africa, through the Marine Living Resources Act (MLRA) 18 of 1998, used individual transferable quotas (ITQs) to broaden resource access through allocating quotas to new entrants, even though the system has been created to reduce capacity through a reduction in the number of active fishers. The formal action space created through fisheries reform in South Africa left many artisanal fishers to operate in the informal action spaces, selling Thyrsites atun (snoek) to poor communities to sustain their livelihoods. Artisanal fishers were not recognized by MLRA of 1998 and through class action case brought against the ITQ system, and in out of court settlement with the claimants in 2007, 1000 interim relief permits will be...
