Spittlebugs are the most damaging pasture pests in tropical America where extensive monocultures of Brachiaria decumbens cv. Basilisk have favoured the buildup of spittlebug populations. Under severe spittlebug attack, the entire above-ground portion of the plant appears dry and dead, reducing the stocking rates of damaged pastures. Host plant resistance is a low-cost method of controlling spittlebugs, which farmers can easily adopt. High level of spittlebug resistance is found in the cultivar B. brizantha cv. Marandu, but it requires more fertile soils. A Brachiaria germplasm provided by the International Center for Tropical Agriculture and available at the National Center for Beef Cattle Research (CNPGC) has been screened for spittlebug resistance. The soil flood tolerance of seven genotypes of Panicum maximum Jacq. (PM11, PM34, PM40 and PM45, and the commercial cultivars Massai, Mombaça and Tanzânia) was evaluated in plants subjected to two conditions: flooded and not flooded, during a period of 14 days. Flooding significantly decreased the total and above ground biomass of PM40 and PM45. For cultivar Tanzânia, flooding decreased these two variables and also root biomass. The root, total and above ground relative growth rates were significantly reduced by flooding in cultivar Tanzânia, while in PM45 only the above ground relative growth rate was reduced. Cultivar Tanzânia showed significant differences for all variables analyzed, thus was not flood tolerant, as well as PM40 and PM45. It could be... |

Microsporogenesis was analyzed in an interspecific hybrid between an artificially tetraploidized sexual accession of Brachiaria ruziziensis (R genome) and a natural apomictic tetraploid accession of B. brizantha (B genome). Chromosomes associated predominantly as bivalents. From this phase to the end of meiosis, chromosomes presented irregular segregation and abnormal arrangement in the metaphase plate. During metaphase I, in 27.8% of meiocytes, bivalents were distributed in two metaphase plates. In anaphase I, two distinct and typical bipolar spindles were formed. In 29.7% of pollen mother cells, one genome did not divide synchronically, with chromosomes lagging behind or not segregating at all. The second division was very irregular, resulting in... |

Chromosome number and meiotic behavior were evaluated in 36 Brazilian accessions of the grass Paspalum (which had never previously been analyzed) to determinate which accessions might be useful in interspecific hybridizations. The analysis showed that one accession of Paspalum coryphaeum was diploid (2n = 2x = 20) and one accession of Paspalum conspersum hexaploid (2n = 6x = 60), the remaining 34 accessions being tetraploid (2n = 4x = 40). The pairing configuration was typical for the ploidy level i.e. in the diploid, chromosomes paired as 10 bivalents, in tetraploids as bi-, tri- and quadrivalents, and in hexaploid as 30 bivalents. A low frequency of meiotic abnormalities (less than 10%) was observed in the diploid, hexaploid and some tetraploid... |

Using a simulation model as an analysis tool, the economic impact of spittlebugs in pastures of Colombia was quantified in terms of animal production. Three levels of abundance (10, 25, 50 adults/m²) and farm area affected (25, 50, 100%) were evaluated using data obtained in Brazil for Notozulia entreriana (Berg) on Brachiaria decumbens Stapf. The model considered dual-purpose production systems in two contrasting ecosystems: (1) the dry tropics, characterized by a well defined, 6-month rainy season and (2) the humid tropics, characterized by uniform rainfall distribution throughout the year. Compared to healthy pastures, stocking rate, milk and meat productivity decreased 1-8, 8-34 and 38-54%, respectively, at low, intermediate and high abundance levels,... |
