Research on the ability of tropical soils to support fast-growing forests species is required to optimize, preserve and select lands for timber production. In this work site index (SI) of Eucalyptus grandis and E. urophylla plantations in Southeastern Mexico, was related to chemical and physical soil properties. Based on a joint model of SI vs. sand content, the fit suggests that SI improves as the sand content increases (p<0.01). Sand content of 28% in the surface soil (0-5 cm) and 24% in the sub-surface soil (5-30 cm) is a desired minimum for establishing highly productive stands. The best SI conditions were found on sandy soils with a sand content of 65 %. Other variables, such as soil bulk density, N mineralization and organic matter were also... |

ABSTRACTUnderstanding soil formation processes across different landscapes is needed to predict how soil properties will respond to land use change. This study aimed to characterize mountainous Inceptisols (Cambisols) under high altitude subtropical climate in southeastern Brazil, by soil physical, chemical and micromorphological analyses, under native forest and pasture. The soil under pasture had a greater bulk density than under forest, resulting in a severe reduction of macroporosity. At two depths, coarse quartz grains are angular, suggesting absence of transportational processes, thus confirming an autochthonous pedogenesis from the underlying gneissic rock. Most feldspars were weathered beyond recognition, but mineral alteration was commonly seen... |

Climate change may mean significant changes in crop productivity, including for planted forests, due to changes in climatic parameters. These impacts may be more intense in some regions of the country. Scientific investigation based on field data obtained over the long term and projected scenarios are important tools for planning and decision making that can help decrease vulnerability and risk for the forest sector in the near future. Along these lines, this study (which was conducted with support from Klabin S.A., a forest-based company) indicates changes that may be on the horizon, discusses climatic behavior in some regions of Brazil which are important centers for eucalyptus production, and projects impacts on productivity and carbon emissions/removal... |

The effects of the addition of decomposing forest litter, collected from Podzolic soil organic layers (Oi, Oe and Oa) and Brown Forest soil Oe layers, on the amounts and composition of low molecular weight aliphatic carboxylic acids (LACAs) in soils were investigated by incubation experiments for 4 weeks. The total amounts of LACAs were greater at the beginning of incubation (384 to 1155 μmol kg-1), but decreased abruptly after 1 week, becoming relatively stable for a period of 1 to 4 weeks (299 to 377 μmol kg-1). The average amounts (without 0 weeks) of LACAs, especially acetic acid and citric acid, in soils incubated with forest litter under moderately moist conditions, were smaller than in the blank soil. Larger amounts of LACAs, especially formic acid,... |

Lychnophora pohlii Sch. Bip. (Asteraceae), known as "Arnica mineira", is widely used in folk medicine and very abundant in the altitude vegetation of rocky grassland. The aim of this work was to study the density of this species and its relationship with soil parameters in rocky grassland in Diamantina, in the Upper Jequitinhonha region, Minas Gerais. Ten contiguous 20 x 50 m plots were marked (total sampled area 10,000 m²) on the campus Juscelino Kubitschek of the Federal University of Jequitinhonha and Mucuri Valleys (UFVJM). The plants in these plots were evaluated for frequency, dominance and density. The relationship between the density of this species with nine soil physical and chemical properties was analyzed by means of canonical correspondence... |

Human activity is one of the main causes of the physical, chemical and biological degradation of soils. This degradation implies a change in soil quality as it involves both a decrease in productivity and changes in the ecological functions of the soil. The objective of the present study was to investigate the effect of soil use on soil biochemical properties, with the aim of providing data that allow assessment of the usefulness of enzymatic activities as indicators of soil quality. In addition to physical and chemical properties, different hydrolase enzymes involved in the C, N, P and S cycles, and other biochemical properties, such as the microbial biomass C and soil basal respiration, were analysed. The results obtained allowed different conclusions to... |
