CHILEAN MARINE MOLLUSCA OF NORTHERN PATAGONIA COLLECTED DURING THE CIMAR-10 FJORDS CRUISE Gayana
Cárdenas,Javiera; Aldea,Cristian; Valdovinos,Claudio.
The tip of the South American cone is one of the most interesting Subantarctic areas, both biogeographically and ecologically. Nonetheless, knowledge of the area's biodiversity, in particular that of the subtidal marine habitats, remains poor. Therefore, in 2004, a biodiversity research project was carried out as a part of the cruise Cimar-10 Fjords, organized and supported by the Chilean National Oceanographic Committee (CONA). The results of the subtidal marine mollusk surveys are presented herein. The samples were collected aboard the Agor 60 "Vidal Gormaz" in winter 2004. The study area covered the northern Chilean Patagonia from Seno de Relocanví (41°31'S) to Boca del Guafo (43°49'S), on the continental shelf from 22 to 353 m depth. The Mollusca were...

MORPHOLOGICAL AND ANATOMICAL FEATURES OF FLAMMULINA FESTIVA SCOTT, 1970 (STYLOMMATOPHORA; CHAROPIDAE) FROM SOUTHERN CHILE, WITH NOTES ON ITS NATURAL HISTORY Gayana
Cádiz,Francisco J; Gallardo,Carlos S.
Flammulina festiva Scott, 1970 is a terrestrial gastropod endemic to southern Chile. Characteristics of living specimens, including the anatomy of the excretory and reproductive systems of this species are here reported for the first time. The excretory system of this species is of the charopid type with a short, curved primary ureter, and a secondary ureter which extends to the excretory sinus. The reproductive system exhibits characteristics similar to other Charopidae. There is an ovotestis that is divided into seven lobes, a well-developed albumin gland, an ovospermial duct with a proximally diverticulate, distally undivided prostatic gland, plus a short oviduct. The terminal portion of the system shows a pointed epiphallus, and a phallus within a...

Les peuplements benthiques du plateau insulaire de la Martinique et des zones bathyales adjacentes. Cas particulier de la malacofaune ArchiMer
Paulmier, Gerard; Durand, Francoise.
Several oceanographic surveys in Martinique waters with, as main objectives, either geological mapping and evaluating marine aggregate resources of research into deep water carcinologie resources, nafe produced interesting informtion on benthic pppulations situated from the infralittoral to the bathyal shelf, for the wole of faunistic groups and more specifically for the malacofauna. The distribution of the various faunistic group has been analysed in function to the bathymetric, edaphic and possibly, thermic factors. The infralittoral zones, up to the 20 metres isobath, and circalittoral, between 60  and 80 metres, are known to have the richest populations. Corals, sponges, polychaete annelida and molluscs are the best represented, numerically as well as...

Preliminary biological characterization of the Saldanha hydrothermal field at the Mid-Atlantic Ridge (36 degrees 34 ' N, 32 degrees 26 ' W, 2200 m) ArchiMer
Biscoito, M; Almeida, A; Segonzac, Michel.
A preliminary description of the biology of the Saldanha hydrothermal field in the Mid-Atlantic Ridge (36 degrees 34'N, 32 degrees 26'W, 2200 m) is given, based on direct observation, video images and samples. Venting occurs mainly in a diffuse way through sediment, but hydrothermal fluid discharges are visible through centimeter-long orifices, scattered on the sediment, over an area of approximately 400 m(2), at depths between 2,200 and 2,220 metres. Emitted fluids are transparent, with a temperature of 7-9 degrees C. An almost complete absence of macro- and megafauna around the venting orifices was found. The only vent invertebrate identified was the gastropod Phymorhynchus sp., with only two juvenile specimens caught. A careful examination of the images...

Cymatium corrugatum (Lamarck 1816) Gastropoda, Prosobranchia. A new species for the adriatic ArchiMer
Simunovic, A.
Very valuable papers concerning malacology of the Adriatic Sea deal, for the most part, with the systematics, whereas there is a substantial number of papers with very scarce information on the ecology of individual species. Since I intended to provide some more comprehensive data on individual species, rather complex bionomic and biocoenological research was undertaken aiming to study the taxonomy and the ecology of the Prosobranchiata group. Present research covered different biotopes of the northern, middle and southern Adriatic, both in the shallow coastal and deeper open littoral, and hard and mobile bottoms. Material was collected in two ways: 1) Scuba diving or direct collection and observations; and 2) an indirect method of collection of samples by...

Donnees sur les gasteropodes dulcicoles de l'ouest de la France: Mise en evidence de cinq groupes d'especes (ACP) ArchiMer
Costil, F.
24 Species of Gastropoda, representing 3357 specimens, have been sampled in 57 varied ponds of Brittany (France). The most frequent species (at least in 10% of the samples) are considered according to their average abundance and dominance. The average specific richness of the ponds where the species have been collected is studied. In a second stage, the Gastropoda are analysed by means of a principal component analysis. The 1-2 plane correspond to 87% of the whole variance. This analysis associated with a cluster analysis led to the partition of 5 groups of species.

Modelisation bioeconomique de la pecherie de buccin (Buccinum undatum L.: Gastropoda) du port de Granville (Manche ouest). Elements de gestion de la ressource. ArchiMer
Santarelli, L; Gros, Philippe.
The totality of French landings of whelk (Buccinum undatum L.) is assignable to the fisheries of the Normand-Breton Gulf, western Channel. The aim of this paper is to forecast economic rent of the potters of the harbour of Granville, as a function of the two main variates open to supervision: the size of the fishing fleet, and the number of whelk-pots per ship. In order to assess the biological and financial consequences of a prospective development, a deterministic model of the fleet-resource system is proposed. Results of simulations emphasize the sharpness of the rent-dissipation problem under existing tendencies. Therefore some recommendations are put forward to derive a fishery policy that would enable the system to be maintained near optimal...

A model of fluff layer erosion and subsequent bed erosion in the presence of the bioturbator, Hydrobia ulvae ArchiMer
Orvain, Francis; Le Hir, Pierre; Sauriau, Pierre-guy.
Previous studies have shown that the gastropod Hydrobia ulvae destabilizes the top layers of fine-grained sediments. This process is mediated by the formation of a "biogenic" fluff layer that includes tracks, faecal pellets and mucus. This fluff layer has been shown to be easily resuspended before general bed erosion. In order to examine how fluff layer and bed. erosion interact, flume experiments were performed with fluid sediments of varying water contents. Ten thousand snails were placed and allowed to crawl for 5 h on the sediment surface, and then the resuspended sediment mass was measured in response to step-wise shear stress increases. Two distinct erosion phases were observed: (1) initial resuspension of the fluff layer and (2) the subsequent bed...

Information available on the association of luminous bacteria with marine invertebrates is limited. Hence qualitative and quantitative investigations were undertaken with a view to understand the distribution of luminous microflora in relation to the environmental factors and also in the gut of two marine gastropods, Aplysia benedicti Eliot and Bullia tranquebarica (Roding) from Porto Novo (11 degree 29'N, 79 degree 46'E) waters of the East coast of India. The gut of the gastropods harboured maximum number of luminous bacteria when compared to the water and sediment. Qualitative analysis revealed the presence of two luminous bacterial components, viz. Vibrio harveyi and V. fishceri. V. fischeri was not found in association with A. benedicti . The isolates...

De novo assembly and annotation of the European abalone Haliotis tuberculata transcriptome ArchiMer
Harney, Ewan; Dubief, Bruno; Boudry, Pierre; Basuyaux, Olivier; Schilhabel, Markus B.; Huchette, Sylvain; Paillard, Christine; Nunes, Flavia.
The European abalone Haliotis tuberculata is a delicacy and consequently a commercially valuable gastropod species. Aquaculture production and wild populations are subjected to multiple climate-associated stressors and anthropogenic pressures, including rising sea-surface temperatures, ocean acidification and an emerging pathogenic Vibrio infection. Transcript expression data provides a valuable resource for understanding abalone responses to variation in the biotic and abiotic environment. To generate an extensive transcriptome, we performed next-generation sequencing of RNA on larvae exposed to temperature and pH variation and on haemolymph of adults from two wild populations after experimental infection with Vibrio harveyi.
