Marker assisted breeding and mass selection of wheat composite cross populations Organic Eprints
Steffan, Philipp; Borgen, Anders; Lazzaro, Mariaterresa; Backes, Gunter; Rasmussen, Søren Kjærgaard.
Utilising diverse populations instead of single line varieties is expected to lead to a number of advantages in cereal production. These include reduced epidemics of plant diseases, improved weed competition and better exploitation of soil nutrients, resulting in improved yield stability. However, a number of challenges must be met before diverse wheat populations can be introduced into commercial wheat production: one of these is the development of breeding technologies based on mass selection which enable breeders and farmers to improve specific traits in populations and maintain diversity at the same time.

Comparative evaluation of phytochemical profiles and identification of flavonoids in cereal grains Organic Eprints
Liu, Q; Borgen, Anders; Trust, Beta.
The phytochemicals including flavonoids and phenolic acids mainly contained in the outer layer of the kernels are key factors responsible for the biofunctionality of whole grains. The phytochemical profiles of twelve grain samples comprising 6 wheats, 3 barleys and 3 oats were studied for comparative evaluation of their antioxidant properties. Total phenolic content (TPC) and antioxidant activities (DPPH and ORAC) of the grain extracts were measured. The bound phenolic acids were identified and quantified using HPLC and mass spectrometry. The flavonoids in different grain were analyzed using HPLC and tandem mass spectrometric techniques. TPC in acidified methanol extracts ranged from 164 to 226, 264-391, and 308-331 mg/100 g for wheat, oats and barley,...

Spring barley grain quality changes in conventional and organic growing conditions Organic Eprints
Kokare, A.; Legzdina, L.; Lammerts van Bueren, Edith T..
While breeding for organic farming it is necessary to identify the most appropriate growing conditions in which to perform the selection process. Soil fertility, crop management, yield level and other factors may vary very much between each organic farm, and between organic farms and research institutions where the selection is usually performed. Since plant breeding requires considerable input of resources and the market for organic varieties is limited, it is essential to find the most appropriate selection conditions that will provide acceptable varieties for organic farms. Spring barley breeding lines selected from two cross combinations (Primus/Idumeja and Anni/Dziugiai) at two distinctive organic and two conventional locations were used in...

Vergleich der Adaptation von Winterweizenpopulationen mit unterschiedlichem Anbauhintergrund Organic Eprints
Weedon, Odette; Haak, Jette; Brumlop, Sarah; Finckh, Maria R.; Heinrich, Sven.
Thirteen winter wheat composite cross populations originating from one population but with differing histories over six years and three reference varieties were compared for yield, disease occurrence, as well as phenotypic diversity. The populations performed similarly and often better than the reference varieties in terms of yield and had lower incidence of disease. The populations are also phenotypically diverse and differ among each other, indicating that they have maintained a high degree of diversity over time and in varying locations, but most likely also diverged from each other.

AN ALTERNATIVE APPROACH TO PLANT HEALTH: THE PROCEDURAL CONCEPT APPLIED TO COMMON BEAN SEED SYSTEMS Organic Eprints
Klaedtke, Stephanie; Stassart, Pierre; Chable, Véronique.
Pathogen-free seed is one strategy to protect plants and prevent the introduction and spread of dangerous pests. While this strategy reduces damage to crops and delays the global spread of pathogens, it may also be regarded as an overly reductionist approach to plant health disfavoring the resilience of cropping systems. Rather than defining plant health as an objective entity, a procedural concept consisting of a set of rules for debate in order to incorporate different viewpoints on the continua between naturalist and normativist approaches, negative and positive definitions, reductionism and holism and functionality and resilience has been proposed. In the ongoing research project presented here, the questions suggested are applied to the case of...

Quelle sélection fruitière pour une production durable, à faible niveau d’intrants ? Méthodologie pour un réseau de sélection variétale décentralisée Organic Eprints
Brun, Laurent; Warlop, François; Mercier, Vincent; Broquaire, Jean-Michel; Clauzel, Guy; Gomez, Christelle; Parveaud, Claude-Eric; Audergon, Jean-Marc.
In France Fruit production is cultivated on 140 thousand hectares, mainly conducted on intensive training system. Very few elements are available on low input training systems while they have to integrate the Global rule under the frame of Ecophyto 2018. In order to evaluate if another system of cultivation will be possible, a project has been developed to highlight the main factors to be integrated in low input training system. A low input multilocal experimental design has thus been investigated on apricot in two main regions of production: Rhone valley and Roussillon. A set of 9 common cultivars with 20 replications each, planted in a complete single-tree randomization design has been established. As already observed in apple orchard, a larger set of...

Baking performance and sensory quality of organic wheat cultivars Organic Eprints
Kidmose, Ulla; Jensen, Sidsel; Mejnertsen, Peter; Jørgensen, Johannes Ravn; Thorup-Kristensen, Kristian.
Eleven different wheat cultivars (Thaifun, Triso, Thasos, Trappe, Amaretto, Diskett, Økilde, Dache, Koga, Spelt and Emmer) were cultivated in an organic study using three different organic treatments (no manure, household waste compost and sewage sludge compost). Bread was baked with flour from each of the samples. The protein content, the gluten content and the Falling Number (FN) were measured for the flour samples and specific volum and sensory quality were measured on the bread samples. A big variation was found in protein and gluten content and Falling Number between flour samples of eleven different wheat cultivars that were grown using three different field treatments. A correlation was found between the protein content and the gluten content (R2 =...

Steigerung der Anthracnoseresistenz von Rotklee durch rekurrente Selektion Organic Eprints
Jacob, Irene; Hartmann, Stephan; Schubiger, Franz Xaver; Struck, Christine.

Efficacy of non-synthetic seed treatments against anthracnose (Colletotrichum lupini) in white lupin Organic Eprints
Haesen, Esther.
White lupin (Lupinus albus) is an interesting crop for use as food, feed, forage or cover crop. However, its cultivation is currently limited because of its high susceptibility to the seed-borne pathogen Colletotrichum lupini, causal agent of lupin anthracnose. Twenty-eight seed treatments were studied here for their efficacy against lupin anthracnose, consisting of 4 hot water, 5 steam, 4 dry heat, 5 electron, 2 plant-based and 2 microbial treatments, as well as 6 controls. Experiments were divided into a germination assay and a pot-based disease assessment experiment. Treatment effects were studied by visual assessments of plants, culture-based incubation of plant tissue and quantitative polymerase chain reaction (qPCR)-based detection of Colletotrichum...
