Environmental structure affects taxonomic diversity but not functional structure of understory birds in the southwestern Brazilian Amazon 36
OLIVEIRA,Jocieli de; ALMEIDA,Sara M.; FLORÊNCIO,Fernando P.; PINHO,João B.; OLIVEIRA,Dalci M. M.; LIGEIRO,Raphael; RODRIGUES,Domingos J..
ABSTRACT Changes in environmental characteristics can affect habitat use by birds, impacting the number of individuals, number of species, and changing species composition and functional structure of assemblages. Metrics that evaluate the functional structure of biological assemblages constitute a complementary tool to the traditional taxonomic approach, because they quantify the differences between species by means of functional traits. We assessed the effect of environmental characteristics on the taxonomic diversity (species richness, species composition and number of individuals) and functional structure (functional richness, functional evenness, Rao’s functional diversity, and community-weighted mean traits) of bird assemblages in northern Mato Grosso...

Habitat use, fruit consumption, and population density of the black-headed night monkey, Aotus nigriceps, in southeastern Peru 36
HELENBROOK,William. D.; WILKINSON,Madison L.; SUAREZ,Jessica A..
ABSTRACT The black-headed night monkey, Aotus nigriceps, has one of the largest distribution ranges of the 11 night monkey species found across Central and South America. Yet, only three studies have focused on their ecology, describing considerable variation in habitat, group composition, and population density. Therefore, we analyzed habitat use, group composition, population density, and diet of 14 groups at two field sites in southeastern Peru. All sampled groups were found in secondary tropical rainforest, often dominated by native bamboo species. Half of the observed sleeping sites were in bamboo stands, though groups also emerged from cane thickets and lianas. This contrasts with other Aotus studies which have found groups living in tree cavities...

García-Mateos,Rosario; Soto-Hernández,Marcos; Zavala-Chávez,Fernando; Kite,Geofrey.
Abstract The purpose of this study was to compare the alkaloid profile in different tissues analyzed by GC/MS and to contribute to the ecological knowledge of Calia secundiflora (patol). Samples of leaves, root and seeds of patol (mescal bean) were collected and field information was recorded in the States of Hidalgo and Querétaro, México, using the point-centered quarted method. Species dominance was calculated (value of importance) and the two locations were compared in species richness, similarity index, and soil data. Seventeen species of plants were found in Hidalgo and 21 in Querétaro; Flourensia resinosa and patol dominated the vegetation in Hidalgo, while patol and Dodonaea viscosa dominated in Querétaro. The profile of the quinolizidine alkaloids...

Composition of functional ecological guilds of the fish fauna of the internal sector of the Amazon Estuary, Pará, Brazil 42
MOURÃO,KEILA R.M.; FERREIRA,VALDIMERE; LUCENA-FRÉDOU,FLÁVIA.
The present study describes the spatial and temporal structure of the estuarine fish community in the internal sector of the Amazon Estuary. Samples were obtained in the main channels and tidal creeks of Guajará and Marajó Bays and Guamá River. A total of 41,516 fish specimens were collected, representing 136 taxa, 38 families and 12 orders. In the dry season, the mean salinity of the main channel increased along a limnic-marine gradient, between the Guamá River and the Marajó Bay. Species richness was lowest in the mouth of the Guamá River and in the right margin of the Guajará Bay. Fish species composition and environmental guilds differed markedly among areas: Migrants and Freshwater Stragglers were dominant in the Guamá River and the Guajará Bay, while...

Testing arbitrary classes of light in a physiognomically heterogeneous area of "campo rupestre" vegetation 42
MOREIRA,ANA S.F.P.; BORBA,EDUARDO L.; LEMOS-FILHO,JOSE P..
The Brazilian "campo rupestre" vegetation shows high light heterogeneity, characteristic which is often disregarded in ecophysiological studies due the difficult of obtaining accurate measurements in a complex environment. The aim of the present study it was to describe how much heterogeneous is the light distribution in this environment, as well as tried to define classes in relation to the photosynthetically active radiation (PAR) for 30 rupicolous individuals of Bulbophyllum involutum. The individuals were marked and previously classified in light classes visually predetermined ("full sun", "partially shaded" and "shaded"). Once defined these classes, principal component analysis, cluster and dispersal analyses using direct and indirect PAR measures...

Use of intertidal areas by shrimps (Decapoda) in a brazilian Amazon estuary 42
SAMPAIO,HEBERT A.; MARTINELLI-LEMOS,JUSSARA M..
The present work investigated the occupation and the correlation of the shrimp abundance in relation to environmental variables in different habitats (mangroves, salt marshes and rocky outcrops) in an Amazon estuary. The collections were made in August and November 2009, at low syzygy tide on Areuá Beach, situated in the Extractive Reserve of Mãe Grande de Curuçá, Pará, Brazil totaling 20 pools. In each environment, we recorded the physical-chemical factors (pH, salinity, and temperature) and measured the area (m2) and volume (m3) of every pool through bathymetry. The average pH, salinity, temperature, area and volume of tide pools were 8.75 (± 0.8 standard deviation), 35.45 (± 3), 29.49 °C (± 2.32), 27.41 m2 (± 41.18), and 5.19 m3(± 8.01), respectively....

Courtship, vocalization, and tadpole description of Epipedobates flavopictus (Anura: Dendrobatidae) in southern Goiás, Brazil 49
Costa,Ronan Caldeira; Facure,Kátia Gomes; Giaretta,Ariovaldo Antonio.
Epipedobates flavopictus is a diurnal, aposematic dendrobatid with a wide distribution in seasonal wet tropical regions of Brazil. We describe the daily period of vocalization, advertisement call, courtship behavior, and tadpole of E. flavopictus from a previously unknown population in southern Goiás and compare theses features with that of other populations. Studies were carried out in November (2004) and February (2005). We counted the number of calling males and duration of calling bouts in the morning and evening periods. The advertisement call was recorded with a digital recorder. Tadpole description was based on specimens collected in pools. Males called from well-illuminated sites such as rocky fields, rain channels, and borders of riverine forests....

Occupancy of different types of forest habitats by tyrant flycatchers (Passeriformes: Tyrannidae) 49
Rosa,Gabriel Lima Medina; Anjos,Luiz dos; Moura,Maurício Osvaldo.
The abundance distribution of the tyrant flycatchers (Tyrannidae family) was evaluated in three main forest habitats of Mata dos Godoy State Park (PEMG), north of the state of Paraná. We conducted point counts and from the collected data we calculated the Index of Point Abundance (I. P. A.) of each species in the habitats of interior of mature forest (FLI), slope forest (FLE) and reforestation (REF). Among the 22 recorded species, eight occurred in all habitats, while other eight occurred in two habitats and six were exclusive of one habitat. Among the 16 recorded species in more than one habitat, 10 were more abundant in only one. On the contrary to our expectation and despite the clear habitat segregation among species, the abundance distribution was not...

Effects of natural and anthropogenic environmental changes on riverine fish assemblages: a framework for ecological assessment of rivers 52
Tejerina-Garro,Francisco Leonardo; Maldonado,Mabel; Ibañez,Carla; Pont,Didier; Roset,Nicolas; Oberdorff,Thierry.
Freshwater is a basic need for the mankind. Effective biological tools (ecologically based, efficient, rapid and consistently applicable to different ecological regions) are needed to measure the "health" of rivers. Adapting such tools over a broad geographic area requires a detailed understanding of both the patterns of organisms assemblage composition and distribution within and among water bodies under natural conditions, and the nature of the major environmental gradients that cause or explain these patterns. A comprehensive review of the available litterature dealing with the identification of environmental factors structuring riverine fish assemblages under natural conditions permits to identify the most consistent ones.

Morphological patterns of fish and their relationships with reservoirs hydrodynamics 52
Cunico,Almir Manoel; Agostinho,Angelo Antonio.
The aim of this study was to determine morphological patterns of the most abundant fish species found in reservoirs with different hydraulic retention times and stages of colonization, considering habitat strata and feeding strategies. Samplings were carried out in six Paraná State (Brazil) reservoirs, and morphological data were obtained from 15 individuals of 17 fish species. Ecomorphological attributes that best segregated species, were selected using Discriminant Analysis. These selected attributes were later used in a Principal Components Analysis (PCA). Differences among reservoirs concerning occupation of the ecomorphological space were tested through analysis of variance (null models). The six reservoirs differed in the occupation of the fish...
