Organic dairy farming is an expanding segment of the dairy sector where cow management differs from the conventional model in many respects. Thus, a comparative evaluation of disease and welfare status in organically and conventionally managed dairy cows is required. Assessment of milk yield, udder health and reproductive performance (RP) was done in 20 organically and 20 conventionally managed Swedish dairy herds. In accordance with earlier findings we confirmed lower milk yield in organic cows. Udder health and RP were chosen as indicators of animal health in view of their clinical relevance and the availability of appropriate data bases providing good background knowledge for further animal health assessment. No obvious differences were found in the... |

This study was implemented to improve animal health of laying hens on organic farms. 20 farms were selected and animal health was evaluated. The farmers were inter-viewed about the housing system and management practices. Health and behavioural problems of the herd, as well as the incidence of endo- and ectoparasites were as-sessed. Housing facilities were evaluated and potential causes of health problems noted. Most of the farms have problems with damaged plumage and with the red mite (Dermanyssus gallinae). In most cases farmers know about these problems, but the reasons are difficult to find. This was the next step within the project (results not shown). Potential causes of problems were identified and farm specific animal health plans implemented to... |

Internal parasitic infection can pose major health problems in young livestock and this is particularly so in the context of lambs in organic production systems. In the context of sheep production on an organic farm the challenge to control parasite infection is especially difficult in situations where crop production is absent or a minor element of the whole farm system. Our investigations, to date at Athenry, have concerned an exploration of lamb production in an all-grass farming setting with particular attention being paid to the breeds employed and the seasonal patterns of gastrointestinal parasite challenge. This flock (about 110 ewes plus replacements) is wintered indoors and lambs in early March each year. |

Skatole produced in the large intestine of the pig and the testicular steroid androstenone are the main substances contributing to boar tainted meat from entire male pigs. Boar taint decreases the quality of the meat and is not accepted by consumers. Until now boar taint has been avoided by castrating male pigs. Surgical castration reduces lean meat percentage, growth rate and feed efficiency, and it causes pain to the animal. This constitutes a problem in relation to productivity and welfare. Different attempts on avoiding surgical castration were either not fully effective, not accepted by the market, or they have a long time horizon for implementation. However, when focusing on the effect of feed interventions on boar taint, previous studies have showed... |

Two similar trials were carried out to examine how dietary inclusion of an easily fermentable carbohydrate source such as chicory roots (Cichorium intybus) may effect established and establishing helminth infections in pigs. In the first trial varying feeding periods with crude chicory roots naturally rich in fructans (primarily inulin) were tested whereas crude chicory roots were compared with dried chicory roots and purified inulin in the second trial. In both trials pigs were infected with 3000 O. dentatum L3-larvae while fed a traditional standard diet. When the infections were well established and patent, experimental diets were introduced and the faecal egg counts monitored. Two weeks before the pigs were slaughtered all animals were infected with... |

The rule to use bedding materials of organic provenance might increase the risk of mammary infections caused by environmental pathogens in organic dairy farming. This study focused on the chain of infection and investigated the presence of the same pathogens in the bedding material, on the teat skin, in the teat canal and in fore-milk samples of organic dairy cows. In 30 farms, one front and one hind quarter of 10 randomly selected cows were sampled. Farms were visited twice. Results revealed that only a few farms used bedding with counts of esculin-positive Streptococci and E. coli above the recommended threshold. Most of the straw samples had increased concentrations of coliforme bacteria, but no correlation between these counts and specific management... |

Two different methods to reveal body condition scores (BCS), called independent BCS (iBCS) and dependent BCS (dBCS; similar to the method of Ferguson et al. 1994), were applied in 1111 Swiss Brown dairy cows. Ultrasound measurement of the back fat thickness (BFT) served as validation method. Aim of the study was to evaluate the impact of assessor’s subjective impression of the overall appearance of the cow on the scoring process. With 67.3% of the BFT variance, the dBCS with its consideration of the overall impression of the cow and its more open approach was more suitable to predict the subcutaneous fat appositions. The strictly formularized iBCS could only explain 47.3% of the BFT variance. The pin bone region was identified to cause the biggest... |

Organic milk production varies due to topographical and structural farm conditions, but very little information is available about this variation in Germany. The aim of this study was to identify typical major farm types (MFTs) of German organic dairy farms and to describe their farm, herd, and management characteristics. Based on data from 204 organic dairy farms from previous studies with representative samples, fourMFTs were identified by cluster analysis. Cluster-criteria were herd size, milk yield, region, and housing system. Identified MFTs were (A) medium-scale herds with low-tomedium milk yield, (B) small-scale herds with low milk yield, (C) large scale herds with high milk yield, and (D) medium-scale herds in Southern Germany with medium milk... |

Studies of organic farms in Norway have documented that cows in organic herds are less prone to milk fever compared to the overall average incidence of milk fever in Norway. Milk fever occurs most frequently in high-yielding cows, fat cows and older cows. On average, cows on organic farms are lower yielding, but also older. Dry cow diets relatively high in the anion chloride (Cl–) and low in the cations potassium (K+) and sodium (Na+) can prevent milk fever. In organic farming no inorganic fertilisers are used. This may result in low content of K in the plants and with that a low content of K in the fodder. Often there also is greater diversity of plants (clover, herbs, “weeds”) in an organic meadow than in a conventional meadow. Plants vary in their... |
