A mezőgazdasági épületek és háztartások energiaköltségének csökkentése fontos a versenyképességben és a megélhetésben AgEcon
Herczeg, Rahel Sara; Suveges, Peter.

Households’ WTP for the Reliability of Gas Supply AgEcon
Chou, Wan-Jung; Bigano, Andrea; Hunt, Alistair; La Branche, Stephane; Markandya, Anil; Pierfederici, Roberta.
The security of natural gas supply is an important issue for all EU countries due to the region’s heavy dependence on imported supply sources and in light of energy demand for gas that is continuously increasing. Discussions have emphasised strategies for securing the supply at the macro level, e.g. diversification in supply sources, increase in storage capacity, etc. By contrast, consumers’ demand for the reliability of gas supply is rarely investigated. Hence this study was conducted to examine the economic implications associated with the security of gas supply directly to domestic consumers. Based on the choice experiment approach, household surveys were conducted in France, Italy and the UK. The results confirmed that the degree of the economic impact...

Spousal Risk Preferences and Household Investment Decisions AgEcon
Brady, Michael P.; Mandal, Bidisha.
Most adults are married, plan for retirement with their spouse, and pool assets to a significant degree. How then are each individual’s risk preferences combined in choosing the portfolio that represents for them the optimal tradeoff between risk and return? There are two pathways through which marriage could amplify the expression of individual risk preferences at the household level. First, if people choose spouses in part based on their appetite for risk, or another characteristic correlated with risk tolerance, then there could be polarization of household level risk preferences towards extremes. Second, spouses may strategically adjust their decisions to compensate for their spouse’s preferences. Is an only mildly risk averse person that is...

Groundwater pollution and emerging environmental challenges of industrial effluent irrigation in Mettupalayam Taluk, Tamil Nadu AgEcon
Mukherjee, Sacchidananda; Nelliyat, Prakash.
Industrial disposal of effluents on land and the subsequent pollution of groundwater and soil of surrounding farmlands – is a relatively new area of research. The environmental and socioeconomic aspects of industrial effluent irrigation have not been studied as extensively as domestic sewage based irrigation practices, at least for a developing country like India. The disposal of effluents on land has become a regular practice for some industries. Industries located in Mettupalayam Taluk, Tamil Nadu, dispose their effluents on land, and the farmers of the adjacent farmlands have complained that their shallow open wells get polluted and also the salt content of the soil has started building up slowly. This study attempts to capture the environmental and...

Rural Finance Policies for Food Security of the Poor: Methodologies for a Multicountry Research Project AgEcon
Zeller, Manfred; Ahmed, Akhter U.; Babu, Suresh Chandra; Broca, Sumiter; Diagne, Aliou; Sharma, Manohar P..
The objective of IFPRI's multicountry research program on rural financial policies for food security of the poor is to identify policies and institutional arrangements that help the poor integrate themselves into sustainable savings and credit systems such that they have an increased capacity to invest, bear risk, and smooth consumption. The focus of the research on policy and program design and their effects on household investment and consumption requires field data collection at the institutional and household level. This paper presents the underlying conceptual framework and various methodological approaches that have been reviewed and tested by the team at IFPRI and at collaborating institutions. Methodologies are presented for analysis at the...

UNDERSTANDING THE DETERMINANTS OF INVESTMENT REACTIONS TO DECOUPLING AgEcon
Gallerani, Vittorio; Gomez y Paloma, Sergio; Raggi, Meri; Viaggi, Davide.
The objective of this paper is identify the determinants of reaction to decoupling, focusing, in particular, on farm strategies and investment behaviour both on-farm and off-farm investment. The paper analyses a sample of 248 farm-households located in 8 EU countries, using decision tree algorithms. The factors emerging as determinants of an increase of on-farm investment as a reaction to decoupling are the existence of a successor, age, farm size, part time vs. full time head of farm. Allowing for the use of country variables, these tend to account already for the factors listed above and become the main predictors, followed by labour endowment, specialisation and expectations.

Input Use and Conservation Investments among Farm Households in Rwanda: Patterns and Determinants AgEcon
Clay, Daniel C.; Kelly, Valerie A.; Mpyisi, Edson; Reardon, Thomas.
One of the Government of Rwanda’s key post-war policy objectives has been to increase agricultural productivity and ensure food security by promoting a transition from semi-subsistence production and marketing practices to intensive production and highly commercialized agricultural markets. The government wants farmers to increase land and labor productivity through the use of modern inputs, thereby generating substantial surpluses which can be sold to pay for inputs and generate increases in farm incomes.
