Gil-Agudelo, D.L.; Navas-Camacho, R.; Rodríguez-Ramírez, A.; Reyes-Nivia, M.C.; Bejarano, S.; Garzón-Ferreira, J.; Smith, G.W..

Alcolado, P.M..
The research was carried out in order to know the sponge community composition and structure of the Archipelago Sabana-Camagüey, and to assay their use as indicators of the environmental severity and predictability, as well as of the most important stressors of this territory. For this purpose, sampling was done at stations located in 10 reef transects (between 10 and 20 m deep). Species which occurred more frequently with numerical dominance are typical of environments submitted to strong sedimentation and turbulence, which suggests that these environmental stressors and light are the main determinants of sponge community structure and composition in the studied reefs. The development of dense algal mats is also determinant in shallow stations. Species...

Santodomingo, N.; Rodríguez-Ramírez, A.; Garzón-Ferreira, J..
The pomacentrid Stegastes planifrons is one of the most conspicuous inhabitants of the coral reefs and constitutes an important agent of natural coral mortality. These fishes kill coral directly by removing coral polyps for opening up a space for its algal turfs, which are their main food. The population density, territory and algal turfs areas of Stegastes planifrons were assessed at Chengue and Gayraca bays in Tayrona Natural Park, as a contribution to understand natural processes involved in the coral reef deterioration. During August to November 1999, belt transects (20 x 2 m) were evaluated at four reef habitat types: multispecific coral assemblages dominated by (1) Colpophyllia natans (COLP) or (2) Montastraea spp. (MONT); and monospecific coral...

Benthic communities and geomorphology of the Tesoro Island Coral Reef, Colombian Caribbean OceanDocs
Sánchez-M., Juan M..
The benthic communities distribution in Tesoro Island (Colombian Caribbean) coral reef was determinad by cartography of reef morphology and functional groups from aerial photographs, theodolite triangulation, and bottom transects over depths ranging from O to 30 m. Tesoro Island is a sand cay reef developed over an emerged reef platform whose basal cone possibly originated by mud diapirism on the continental shelf. The benthic communities are distributed as subzones of the geomorphologic units. The reef crest lies along the breaker zone, formed by Millepora spp. buttresses covered on their tops by Palythoa spp. and seawardly by a turf of Dictyota spp. The rear reef (varying from 0.5-1.5 m ¡n depth) is composed of pavement and grooves with live Porites...

Status of coral reef affected by different impacts in some sites of the red sea OceanDocs
Ammar, M.S.A.; Ghobashi, A.A.; Omran, M.A.; Shaaban, A.M..
Using Using SCUBA diving, surveying the coral reef communities at four sites, Red Sea Egypt was done. These sites are: Ras El Behar (polluted by petroleum oil), El-Hamraween (impacted by phosphate shipping), Shabrour Umm Gam’ar (harmed by recreational activities and has been suffering from the outbreak of Acanthaster planci during 1998) and Kalawy (a control site). The skeletal growth of the coral Stylophora pistillata was promoted greatly at the expense of other corals, in presence of chronic oil pollution (Ras El-Behar). In contrast, this species was completely suppressed in presence of phosphate and sulphur enrichment. Petroleum oil led to coral scarcity, space monopolization by one coral and increased sea urchins and algae. Coral reefs enriched with...

OceanDocs
Busutil, L.; Hansel Caballero, H.; Hidalgo, G.; Alcolado-Prieto, P.; Alcolado, P. M..

Cobián Rojas, D.; Chevalier Monteagudo, P.P..
Recreational SCUBA diving on the coral reefs is one of the few activities allowed in the area managed by the Centro Internacional de Buceo María la Gorda at the Guanahacabibes National Park. The composition and structure of fish associations were evaluated on the reefs visited by users of the diving center. To assess possible seasonal changes in fish community densities and composition surveys were carried during the dry and rainy seasons. Visual censuses were carried out at eight diving sites comprising two characteristic reef biotopes. Indices for diversity, evenness, species richness, density, and fish biomass were estimated. Mean density values by sampling site did not show significant differences between seasons. A total of 134 species were recorded...

Confirmation of the occurrence of the coral Pavona chiriquiensis Glynn, Maté and Stemann (Cnidaria: Anthozoa: Agariciidae) in the Colombian Pacific OceanDocs
Zapata, F.A.; Rodríguez-Ramírez, A.; Rodríguez-Moreno, M.; Muñoz, C.G.; López-Victoria, M..

Caballero, H.; Alcolado, P.M.; Semidey, A..
Coral reef condition north of the Havanan provinces (NW Cuba), an area with variable influence from human settlements and runoff, was assessed using the AGRRA methodology’s benthic biological indicators: live coral cover, coral density, maximum colony diameter, old and recent coral mortality, coral recruitment, Diadema antillarum density, and macroalgae cover. Coral communities at 11 reef crest and 22 forereef sites were sampled during 2004. The Shannon heterogenety and Pielou evenness indices were calculated. A total of 33 species of coral, larger than 10 cm in maximum diameter, were identified. The biological indicators analyzed showed significant differences among sites, which suggest a marked heterogeneity in environmental conditions along the study...

Caballero, H.; Busutil, L.; García, Y.; Alcolado, P.M..
The sponge communities at four locations on the east coast of Bahía de Cochinos were surveyed in October 2002. At each location, sampling sites were established in the ecological zones of patch reef (3 m), shallow terrace (6-10 m), and deep terrace (15 m). The line-transect method with a 10 m line as sampling unit was used to measure sponge bottom coverage, and a 1 m square grid was used to quantify sponge community density. Species heterogeneity and species richness indices showed variability among sites and tended to increase with depth. Thirty species belonging to 19 families and 21 genera were found. The most common species were: Mycale laevis, Aplysina cauliformis, Cliona aprica, Aplysina fistularis, and Ectyoplasia ferox, which comprised 48% of the...

Coral bank obstructions to trawling in the middle to outer continental shelf east and west of Lagos. OceanDocs
Awosika, L.F..
The continental shelf east and west of Lagos [long.2o.04.00E to long.4o 00’.00”E] is narrow shelf ranging in width between 25 to 30 kilometers. Echograms from several NIOMR’s cruises reveal the presence of some isolated and in some cases continuous bands of dead Holocene coral banks, within the middle to outer continental shelf [40-120m depth]. The most prominent of these structures are ones occurring between 75-100m of water and running almost parallel to the coastline. The dead coral structures are non-reef forms. They are found either as continuous Bands of rough bottom with width ranging between, 100 to 3,500m or in isolated pinnacled shapes. The pinnacled forms reach heights of over 7 meters in some cases. These coral structures pose obstructions to...

Coral reefs of Gorgona Island, Colombia, with special reference to corallivores and their influence on community structure and reef development OceanDocs
Glynn, P.W.; Prahl, H. von; Guhl, F..

Alcolado, P.M.; Claro-Madruga, R.; Martínez-Daranas, B.; Menéndez-Macía, G.; García-Parrado, P.; Cantelar, K.; Hernández, M.; Valle, R..
Cayo Largo del Sur, located in the southwest of Cuba south of the Gulf of Batabanó, is a beach and diving resort, far from the main island of Cuba and from Isla de la Juventud. Therefore, it is far from important permanent human settlements and from all agricultural and industrial development. However its western reefs are suffering a gradual deterioration process. Great scarcity of mesoherbivores (sea urchin Diadema antillarum, as well as scarid and acanthurid fishes), and high nutrient concentrations were observed. As a consequence, an excessive algal and cyanobacterial mat proliferation occurred. It has been reinforced by high temperatures in 1998 and by the simplification of bottom relief because of coral mortality caused by diseases and cyclones. The...

Coral reefs are very sensitive to the increment in nitrogen concentrations and phosphorus, since these compounds propitiate the macroalgae growth, resulting in the degradation of coral reefs. With the purpose of assessing the degree of nutriphication of the coral reefs in Los Canarreos Archipelago, located in the periphery of the Gulf of Batabanó, and those located in the outer area of Sabana-Camagüey Archipelago (SCA), three samplings were executed in the reefs of Los Canarreos Archipelago (August 1999, March 2000 and August 2000). In SCA, samplings were done in May 2002 and August 2003. The parameters evaluated were nitrates + nitrite, ammonium, total nitrogen, inorganic phosphorus and total phosphorus. The nutrient contents in the reefs located in the...

Effect of physico-chemical factors and human impacts on coral distribution at Tobia Kebir and Sharm el Loly, Red Sea, Egypt OceanDocs
Ammar, M.S.A.; Mahmoud, M.A..
Using SCUBA equipment and the line intercept transect (LIT), the effect of physical factors and human impacts on coral distribution were studied in two Red Sea sites (Sharm El Loly and Tobia Kebir) throughout the period from September, 2003 to October, 2004. The percentage cover of coral species in Northern Sharm El Loly was higher than in Tobia Kebir which might be attributed to optimum temperature and better light intensity. Diving, swimming, boat anchoring and fish feeding by divers are the main human impacts decreasing the percentage cover of corals at Tobia Kebir but fishing seems to have no role due to its limited level. The lower recorded amount of dead corals at Sharm El Loly though it is highly affected by fishing boats, is due to the fact that...
