Variations on maternal-embryonic relationship in two natural and six laboratory made hybrids of Poeciliopsis monacha-lucida (Pisces, Cyprinodontiformes) BABT
Lima,Neuza Rejane Wille.
The objective of this study was to analyze the maternal-embryonic relationship in eight hybrids Poeciliopsis monacha-lucida. Two natural hybrids (MLVII and MLVIII) collected in Mexico, and in a repertory of six hybrids produced by artificial insemination (A1, A4, B1, B2, E1, and E2) were analyzed. Dry weight of mature eggs and of embryos was significantly different among hybrids. All hybrids but B1 and E2 exhibited superfetation and lecithotrophy. This result showed that the association between superfetation and lecithotrophy were not restricted to P. monacha.

Occurrence of Fusarium moniliforme and fumonisins in kernels of maize hybrids in Venezuela BJM
Mazzani,Claudio; Borges,Orángel; Luzón,Odalís; Barrientos,Venancio; Quijada,Pablo.
Fusarium moniliforme (FM) incidence and fumonisins (FUM) content were determined in white kernel samples of maize hybrids, harvested in farms of Guárico and Portuguesa states, Venezuela. FM incidence was estimated in subsamples placed on a malt-salt-agar medium. Values in the range of 0-15 % were considered low, from 15-30% intermediate, and more than 30% high. FUM content was quantified through specific immunoassay (Fumonitest, VICAM Sci. Tech., USA) and values above 1 ppm were considered high. The hybrids were compared using a completely randomized design and results were subjected to analysis of variance and mean comparisons. The correlation between FUM content and FM incidence was also estimated. FM and FUM were detected in all of the 89 samples. Mean...

Development and characterization of hybrids from native wine yeasts BJM
García,Verónica; Rivera,José; Contreras,Angela; Ganga,María Angélica; Martínez,Claudio.
For commercial purposes, the winemaking industry is constantly searching for new yeast strains. Historically, this has been achieved by collecting wild strains and selecting the best for industrial use through an enological evaluation. Furthermore, the increasing consumer demands have forced the industry to incorporate new strategies such as genetic engineering to obtain improved strains. In response to the lack of public acceptance of this methodology, alternative strategies based on breeding have gained acceptance in recent years. Through the use of conjugation of individual spores without the support of genetic engineering methods we generated intraspecific hybrids from wild strains with outstanding enological characteristics and interdelta...

Inbreeding in sugarcane varieties Ciência Rural
Silva,Marcelo de Almeida; Gonçalves,Paulo de Souza.
Sugarcane species are allogamous, i.e. selfing is expected to reduce plant vigor. This study was undertaken to obtain and evaluate first-generation inbred lines that may be used for further crosses and determine the extent of inbreeding depression in sugarcane. In this research, 26 parental varieties were self-pollinated to obtain about 19,000 seedlings. Results showed that it is possible to segregate different traits in a given variety and find lines with promising outcome for all assessed characteristics. The soluble solids segregation observed in low and even high-Brix varieties increases the possibility of quick improvement in this trait. Self-pollination did not produce a general loss in yield traits such as soluble solids, stalk number and stalk...

Caracterización morfológica y agronómica de once híbridos de Brachiaria ssp Colegio de Postgraduados
Peralta Nava, Jorge Armando.

Combining ability of elite clones of Eucalyptus grandis and Eucalyptus urophylla with Eucalyptus globulus Genet. Mol. Biol.
Bison,Odair; Ramalho,Magno Antonio Patto; Rezende,Gabriel Dehon Sampaio Peçanha; Aguiar,Aurélio Mendes; Resende,Marcos Deon Vilela de.
In Brazil, eucalyptus breeding programs for cellulose production has used two species, Eucalyptus grandis and Eucalyptus urophylla. Nevertheless, it would be useful to introgress alleles from other species to improve wood quality and volume. The objective of this research was to evaluate the hybrid potential of elite clones of E. grandis and E. urophylla from the Aracruz Celulose Company S. A. with Eucalyptus globulus clones. To do so, six elite clones were crossed with ten E. globulus clones in a half-diallel mating design. The resulting hybrid combinations as well as the four check clones were evaluated in randomized complete block experiments with single plant plots and 40 replicates from September to October 2001 at three Brazilian sites, Aracruz and...

Molecular markers in Chinese carps and their interspecific hybrids Genet. Mol. Biol.
Fonteles,Soraia B.A.; Fernandes,Flora M. de C.; Lopes,Carlos E.; Kulikoski,Roberto; Kulikoski,Jussara M.; Almeida-Toledo,Lurdes F. de.
A sample consisting of 2 Ctenopharyngodon idella (grass carp) females, 2 Aristichthys nobilis (bighead carp) males, and 10 interspecific hybrids was analyzed using a multidisciplinary approach. The 10 hybrids were the only surviving specimens of a crossbreeding experiment. The cytological approach, involving the measurement of the largest axis of the erythrocytes, revealed that the parental species were diploid, whereas, among the hybrids, eight individuals were triploid, and two were diploid. Two of the triploid individuals were analyzed cytogenetically and showed 2n = 3X = 72 chromosomes. Using the biochemical and molecular approaches, it was possible to confirm that one of the C. idella specimens was the true mother of the hybrids. Those data also...
