Large-Scale Spatial and Temporal Variability of Larval Fish Assemblages in the Tropical Atlantic Ocean Anais da ABC (AABC)
SOUZA,CHRISTIANE S. DE; MAFALDA JUNIOR,PAULO O..
Abstract This study investigated the large-scale spatial and temporal variability of larval fish assemblages in the west tropical Atlantic Ocean. The sampling was performed during four expeditions. Identification resulted in 100 taxa (64 families, 19 orders and 17 suborders). During the four periods, 80% of the total larvae taken represented eight characteristics families (Scombridae, Carangidae, Paralepididae, Bothidae, Gonostomatidae, Scaridae, Gobiidae and Myctophidae). Fish larvae showed a rather heterogeneous distribution with density at each station ranging from 0.5 to 2000 larvae per 100m3. A general trend was observed, lower densities at oceanic area and higher densities in the seamounts and islands. A gradient in temperature, salinity,...

Spatio-temporal distribution of fish larvae in relation to ontogeny and water quality in the oligohaline zone of a North Brazilian estuary Biota Neotropica
Sarpedonti,Valérie; Anunciação,Érica Moema Silva da; Bordalo,Adriana Oliveira.
Larval fish assemblage in Guajará Bay was studied through four quarterly field campaigns and discussed in relation to individuals' development stages and exposure to contaminants poured out by the Pará State Capital City, Belém. Larval densities were low and diversity extremely poor with a strong dominance of clupeids, engraulids and, to a lower extent, sciaenids. The main spawning season was registered at the onset of the rainy period. Pre-flexion and flexion clupeiforms remained in the farmost stations from the city while post-flexion larvae were found near urban activity centres. Unlikely, pre-flexion and flexion sciaenids were scattered along the city waterfront. Post-flexion larvae were rare; it is suggested that sciaenids use the bay as a transitory...

Temporal space-variation of fish larvae in the Gulf of Guayaquil, Ecuador Boletín de Investigaciones
Calderón-Peralta,Gregoria; Ayora-Macías,Gabriela; Solís-Coello,Pilar.
ABSTRACT This study presents the density, taxonomic composition, spatial and temporal distribution of fish larvae in the Gulf of Guayaquil, as well as the relationship with some physical-chemical variables. Samples were collected at 16 stations, taken in the first nautical mile of the external and internal estuary of the gulf, located in front of the province of Guayas and northwest of the island of Puná, during June to December 2012. Surface trawls were carried out with a simple conical network (mesh eye: 300 μm; mouth diameter: 0.3 m; length: 1.2 m). Temperature, salinity, and transparency were measured before each drag. Significant differences were detected between zones, registering higher temperatures, lower salinity, and transparency in the interior...

Spatial and temporal variation of fish larvae in a hypersaline bay of the Colombian Caribbean Boletín de Investigaciones
Gallego Zerrato,Juan José; Giraldo,Alan.
ABSTRACT Spatial distribution patterns and the diversity of organisms are the result of evolution, biogeography and the interaction between the local abiotic and biotic factors that operate at different temporal and spatial scales. This paper describes the spatial and temporal dynamics of the assembly of larval stages of fish in Bahía Portete and evaluates the relationship between spatial and temporal variation in abundance and local oceanographic conditions. Oceanographic and biological information was obtained from two sampling campaigns in July (dry season) and November (rainy season) 2015 to incorporate these contrasting climatic conditions. During each sampling campaign a mesh of 21 stations was performed, distributed in a systematic way in the Bay....

Ichthyoplankton distribution and abundance off southeastern and southern Brazil BABT
Freitas,Débora Martins de; Muelbert,José Henrique.
This study describes the distribution of fish eggs and larvae along the southeastern and southern Brazilian coast. Plankton samples were collected at 85 stations using a Bongo net, and water salinity and temperature were profiled with a CTD. Results showed that fish eggs and larvae, and zooplankton biovolume were distributed in coastal waters with mean temperature of 23&#186C and salinity between 33 and 34. The largest egg abundance occurred along Iguape (24&#186'S) with a partial overlap with zooplankton biovolume and fish larvae were most abundant near shore close to Santos (24&#186S). These protected coastal waters presented a surface layer with lower salinity and higher temperatures, while the bottom layer had cooler water. Ichthyoplankton...

Spatial and temporal distribution of ichthyoplankton in the upper Uruguay river, Brazil BABT
Hermes-Silva,Samara; Reynalte-Tataje,David; Zaniboni-Filho,Evoy.
The distribution and abundance of fish eggs and larvae was analyzed in three sections of the Upper Uruguay river, in a stretch of 290 km. Samples were collected monthly from October, 2001 to March, 2002 during 48-h cycles at 6-h intervals between each sampling. Surface and bottom samples were collected with a 0.5-mm mesh cylindroconical net. Fishes from the Upper Uruguay river were reproductively active mainly from October to January, and this activity was more intense at the Ligeiro and Chapecó tributaries and Chapecó main river. It was observed that the tributaries are important spawning grounds and larval nursery sites, indicating the importance of preserving such environments.

STUDIES ON THE ECOLOGY OF LARVAL MYCTOPHIDS (PISCES, MYCTOPHIDAE): A PROPOSAL FOR NEW RESEARCH LINES IN THE HUMBOLDT CURRENT Gayana
Rodríguez,Laura; Castro,Leonardo.
This is a review on some biological and ecological characteristics of the early life stages of myctophids that exemplify their adaptations to coastal upwelling zones and oceanic nearby areas. The approach has been, however, not to make an exhaustive list of all possible research subjects but, in a more pragmatic way, a) to identify relevant aspects that can be approached with currently available methods in the region and, b) through examples of studies published nationally and regionally, to stimulate future research in larval ecology in the Humboldt Current. Three major themes were assessed: taxonomy and systematics, population ecology and reproductive strategies and, ecophysiology of the early life stages. Among the former, we detected a lack of...

IBSS Repository

IBSS Repository

IBSS Repository

The eastern English Channel, which connects the Atlantic Ocean to the North Sea through the Dover Strait, is an area where numerous and often conflicting human activities take place. A cross-border multidisciplinary project called CHARM was initiated to provide knowledge and tools for planners and decision-makers to durably manage the shared marine living resources. One such tool was an atlas of fish spatial distributions and modelled habitats, which was used here to investigate ontogenic and seasonal shifts in fish spatial distribution and habitat through a case-study, the dab Limanda limanda. Survey data for several life-history stages (eggs, larvae, coastal nurseries, < and > 1 year old) and seasons were used to map spatial patterns (using...

On the occurrence of ichthyoplankton in the Saronikos Gulf, Aegean Sea, 1. Anchovy and sardines in 1969-1970-1971. ArchiMer
Yannopoulos, A; Yannopoulosa, C; Soteriades-vlahos, C.
The spawning and nursery grounds of 3 spp of commercial importance, Engraulis encrasicholus, Sardinella aurita and S. pilchardus were studied in the Saronikos Gulf during 1969, 1970 and 1971. The waters of the gulf are very rich due to turbulence caused by currents penetrating the gulf from the Aegean Sea. This turbulence causes bottom upwelling especially in the northern region which is shallower. At the height of their reproduction these fish represent 90-95 per cent of the entire ichthyoplankton, especially in the northern region. E. encrasicholus appears to be the most abundant sp with a maximum of 1099/m super(2) of surface waters (where the density of eggs = 536 and of larvae = 563). 232/m super(2) of surface water represents the maximum for S....

Camus, Patrick; Delpech, Jean-paul; Omnes, Marie-helene; Mastail, Max.
A two years ichthyoplankton sampling program over an eight station network on each side of a coastal tidal front was conducted twice a month during neap tides. A principal component analysis was performed on the data (taxa and observations) which were segregated during the summer into two groups of taxa related to two groups of stations belonging to two different hydrodynamical areas. In July and August 1980 during a tide cycle, zooplankton was investigated at two stations in the stratified and transitional area. Periodic fluctuations of meroplanktonic taxa correlated to the movement of the front induced by the tide were observed.

Connectivity patterns of coastal fishes following different dispersal scenarios across a transboundary marine protected area (Bonifacio strait, NW Mediterranean) ArchiMer
Koeck, Barbara; Gerigny, Olivia; Durieux, Eric Dominique Henri; Coudray, Sylvain; Garsi, Laure-helene; Bisgambiglia, Paul-antoine; Galgani, Francois; Agostini, Sylvia.
The Strait of Bonifacio constitutes one of the rare transboundary Marine Protected Areas (MPA) of the Mediterranean Sea (between Sardinia, Italy and Corsica, France). Based on the hypothesis that no-take zones will produce more fish larvae, compared to adjacent fished areas, we modeled the outcome of larvae released by coastal fishes inside the no-take zones of the MPA in order to: (i) characterize the dispersal patterns across the Strait of Bonifacio; (ii) identify the main potential settlement areas; (iii) quantify the connectivity and the larval supply from the MPAs to the surrounding areas. A high resolution hydrodynamic model (MARS 3D, Corse 400m) combined to an individual based model (Ichthyop software) was used to model the larval dispersal of fish...

The sampling of eggs and larvae of sole and sprat at Gravelines (French part of the North Sea coast) since 1975 has produced a long-term series showing major interannual changes, Comparison of the results obtained on two species, one benthic and the other one pelagic, suggests some events affecting the environment that are also revealed by the holoplanktonic (appendicularia, chaetognatha) and meroplanktonic (cirripeda larvae) compartment. This Study attempts also to distinguish general variations from more closely species-related fluctuations.

Threatened fish spawning area revealed by specific metabarcoding identification of eggs and larvae in the Beni River, upper Amazon ArchiMer
Miranda-chumacero, Guido; Mariac, Cédric; Duponchelle, Fabrice; Painter, Lilian; Wallace, Robert; Cochonneau, Gérard; Molina-rodriguez, Jorge; Garcia-davila, Carmen; Renno, Jean-françois.
Identifying fish spawning areas is of great ecological and conservation importance as fishes are suffering increasing threats levels from anthropogenic activities. However, to date very few studies have done so in the Amazon basin. In the Beni River located in the upper Madeira basin, fishers reported that a particular ecotone near Rurrenabaque city was a fish reproduction area. To test the importance of this zone as a spawning site, we conducted an ichthyoplankton survey during the month when reproduction is most likely to occur. The specific identification of larvae and eggs was made with a metabarcoding analysis. With this approach 13 different fish species of high importance for regional and local fisheries were identified, including the long-distance...
