| Within the European water framework directive (WFD), the status assessment of littoral waters is based both on the chemical quality and on the ecological quality of each water body. Quality elements enabling to assess the ecological status of a water body are, among other things, biological quality elements (phytoplankton, macroalgae, angiosperms, benthic invertebrates, fish), for each of which the member states have developed quantitative indicators. | • In order to assess the sustainability of fish resources in the Natural Marine Park of Mayotte (Western Indian Ocean), indicators and monitoring protocols must be determined. • This study relied on the underwater video technique STAVIRO for assessing fish communities and resources. A pilot survey was conducted in Nov. 2014 in the south-east quarter of the Mayotte lagoon, an area encompassing the marine reserves of Longogori, M’Bouzi and the Saziley Marine Park. Out of 115 stations collected, 104 were analysed for habitat and fish, based on a list of 527 species with fishing, ecological, or emblematic interest (cf. | The integration of fishing management into the ecosystemic approach has been recommended for many years by international consultative bodies; it is also written into international conventions and agreements. The implementation of the ecosystemic approach involves the development of programmes for monitoring exploited ecosystems in order to measure the effects of management steps. Plotting the results of these observations for operational reasons requires formalizing summary performance indicators. | - The AMBIO project conducted a comprehensive video-based baseline assessment of coral reef fish communities and associated habitats in the New Caledonian lagoons. The survey relies on remote unbaited underwater video observations, using the STAVIRO rotating technique. - The study pertains to the reefs of Astrolabe, Pétrie and Walpole Island, located within the Coral Sea Natural Park. | Coastal areas are complex socio-ecosystem where ecological, human and decisional compounds show multiple and reciprocal relationships. Because of the growth of population and tourism sector, coastal areas are permanently threatened through increase of recreational uses and diversification of related activities. To better understand coastal areas functioning, it is necessary to take into account uses and their management.
