Evaluation of large-scale unsupervised classification of New Caledonia reef ecosystems using Landsat 7 ETM+ imagery ArchiMer
Bouvet, G; Ferraris, J; Andrefouet, S.
The capacity of the Landsat 7 Enhanced Thematic Mapper Plus sensor to classify the shallow benthic ecosytems of New Caledonia (South Pacific) is tested using a novel unsupervised classification method. The classes are defined by using a set of multiple spectral decision rules based on the image spectral bands. A general model is applied to the entire Southwest lagoon (5500 km(2)) and tested on three representative sites: a section of the barrier reef, a cay reef flat rich in corals, and a cay reef flat rich in algae and seagrass beds. In the latter one, the classification results are compared with a locally optimized model, with aerial color photographs and extensive ground-truthed observations. Results show that a reconnaissance of the main benthic...

Spatial imprints of plate tectonics on extant richness of terrestrial vertebrates ArchiMer
Descombes, Patrice; Leprieur, Fabien; Albouy, Camille; Heine, Christian; Pellissier, Loic.
Aim In interaction with past climate changes, it is likely that plate tectonics contributed to the shaping of current global species diversity, but so far this has not been statistically quantified at the global level. Here, we tested whether plate tectonics since the breakup of Gondwana left an imprint on current patterns of species richness of amphibians, birds and mammals. Location Global. Methods We reconstructed the absolute positions of continental plates since the Early Cretaceous and used this information to derive variables of latitudinal shifts and potential exchanges among landmasses that could have modulated species richness. Using a multi-model inference approach combining both contemporary and historical variables, we quantified the...

Distributions of Indo-Pacific lionfishes Pterois spp. in their native ranges: implications for the Atlantic invasion ArchiMer
Kulbicki, Michel; Beets, James; Chabanet, Pascale; Cure, Katherine; Darling, Emily; Floeter, Sergio R.; Galzin, Rene; Green, Alison; Harmelin-vivien, Mireille; Hixon, Mark; Letourneur, Yves; De Loma, Thierry Lison; Mcclanahan, Tim; Mcilwain, Jennifer; Moutham, Gerard; Myers, Robert; O'Leary, Jennifer K.; Planes, Serge; Vigliola, Laurent; Wantiez, Laurent.
Lionfish (Pterois volitans and P. miles) have become a major concern in the western Attantie and Caribbean since their introduction in the 1980s. Invasive lionfish can reach very high population densities on coral reefs in their invaded range, yet there are few data from their native range in the Indo-Pacific for comparison. We compiled data on the geographical distribution and density of Indo-Pacific lionfishes in their native ranges from published and unpublished underwater visual censuses and field collections. We found that lionfish in their native Indo-Pacific range are unevenly distributed, with higher densities in the Indian Ocean than in the Pacific. Lionfish densities increase significantly with increasing latitude, and are significantly higher in...

Not all spotted cats are leopards: evidence for a Hemilienardia ocellata species complex (Gastropoda: Conoidea: Raphitomidae) ArchiMer
Fedosov, Alexander E.; Stahlschmidt, Peter; Puillandre, Nicolas; Aznar-cormano, Laetitia; Bouchet, Philippe.
The small conoidean Hemilienardia ocellata is one of the easily recognizable Indo-Pacific "turrids", primarily because of its remarkable eyespot colour pattern. Morphological and molecular phylogenetic analyses revealed four species that share this "characteristic" colour pattern but demonstrate consistent differences in size and shell proportions. Three new species - Hemilienardia acinonyx sp. nov. from the Philippines, H. lynx sp. nov. from Papua New Guinea and H. pardus sp. nov. from the Society and Loyalty Islands - are described based on the results of phylogenetic analyses. Although the H. ocellata species complex clade falls in a monophyletic Hemilienardia, H. ocellata and H. acinonyx sp. nov. possess a radula with semi-enrolled or notably flattened...

Deglacial delta δ18 and hydrologic variability in the tropical Pacific and Indian Oceans ArchiMer
Gibbons, Fern T.; Oppo, Delia W.; Mohtadi, Mahyar; Rosenthal, Yair; Cheng, Jun; Liu, Zhengyu; Linsley, Braddock K..
Evidence from geologic archives suggests that there were large changes in the tropical hydrologic cycle associated with the two prominent northern hemisphere deglacial cooling events, Heinrich Stadial 1 (HS1; similar to 19 to 15 kyr BP; kyr BP = 1000 yr before present) and the Younger Dryas (similar to 12.9 to 11.7 kyr BP). These hydrologic shifts have been alternatively attributed to high and low latitude origin. Here, we present a new record of hydrologic variability based on planktic foraminifera-derived delta O-18 of seawater (delta O-18(sw)) estimates from a sediment core from the tropical Eastern Indian Ocean, and using 12 additional delta O-18(sw) records, construct a single record of the dominant mode of tropical Eastern Equatorial Pacific and...

Habitat preferences of coral-associated wentletrap snails (Gastropoda: Epitoniidae) Naturalis
Gittenberger, A.; Hoeksema, B.W..
Examination of about 60,000 scleractinian corals of the families Dendrophylliidae, Euphylliidae and Fungiidae for the presence of associated wentletrap snails (Gastropoda: Epitoniidae) revealed various ectoparasitic life history strategies. Twenty Indo-Pacific wentletrap species were found, which were either host-specific or generalist. Most species were associated with mushroom corals, especially free-living species belonging to the Fungiidae. Snails showed different preferences with regard to their position relative to mushroom corals, the host’s size and its substrate. No preferences for depth were found. Infestation rates of mushroom corals in multi-species assemblages were negatively correlated with coral densities, which indicates that epitoniid...

Contribution to the knowledge of Leucosiidae I. The identity of Leucosia craniolaris (Linnaeus, 1758), and redefinition of the genus Leucosia Weber, 1795 (Crustacea: Brachyura) Naturalis
Galil, B.S..
A study of the genus Leucosia Weber, 1795, led to the establishment of the identity of the type species, L. craniolaris (Linnaeus, 1758), designation of a neotype and redefinition of the genus. Leucosia is now restricted to 4 species: the type species L. craniolaris (Linnaeus, 1758), L. punctata Bell, 1855, L. moresbiensis Haswell, 1880, and a new species, L. rubripalma. They differ from all other species heretofore assigned to the genus in having first male pleopod with a screw-like tightly coiled shaft, terminating in a setose muff. The species are described or redescribed and illustrated, extended synonymies are given, and a key for their identification is provided.

The wentletrap Epitonium hartogi spec. nov. (Gastropoda: Epitoniidae), associated with bubble coral species, Plerogyra spec. (Scleractinia: Euphyllidae), off Indonesia and Thailand Naturalis
Gittenberger, A..
This is the first record of an association between a wentletrap species (Gastropoda: Epitoniidae) and coral species of the Euphyllidae (Scleractinia), i.e. Plerogyra simplex and P. diabolotus. While describing Epitonium hartogi spec. nov., special attention is given to the ontogenetic development within the eggcapsules, the structure and microsculpture of the opercula, the radulae, and the microsculpture on the radular jaws. These characters proved to be at least partly diagnostic in the epitoniid species Epitonium albidum, E. billeeanum, E. costulatum, E. hoeksemai, E. ingridae, E. lochi, E. millecostatum, E. pyramidalis, E. twilae, E. ulu and Nitidiscala tincta. Pseudo-imposex: male features in female volutes not TBT-induced (Gastropoda: Volutidae) Naturalis
Swennen, C.; Horpet, P..
The occurrence of a penis in female gastropods of the superfamily Muricoidea (infraorder Neogastropoda) has commonly been accepted as an indicator of tributyltin (TBT) pollution. Some species seem less sensitive than others, and one belonging to the family Columbellidae has been reported that it lacks the imposex response. During a survey in South-east Asian waters, females of Cymbiola nobilis and Melo melo (family Volutidae) with a small penis and an external vas deferens were initially considered as showing imposex. Doubt arose when 100% of the females had a penis on sites where other gastropods showed no or a low imposex incidence. During the present study, several hypotheses could be rejected such as (1) that the volutes are extremely sensible for TBT;...

The giant barrel sponge Xestospongia testudinaria is an ecologically important species that is widely distributed across the Indo-Pacific. Little is known, however, about the precise biogeographic distribution and the amount of morphological and genetic variation in this species. Here we provide the first detailed, fine-scaled (<200 km2) study of the morphological and genetic composition of X. testudinaria around Lembeh Island, Indonesia. Two mitochondrial (CO1 and ATP6 genes) and one nuclear (ATP synthase β intron) DNA markers were used to assess genetic variation. We identified four distinct morphotypes of X. testudinaria around Lembeh Island. These morphotypes were genetically differentiated with both mitochondrial and nuclear markers. Our results...

A redescription of the Indo-West Pacific Spirobranchus corrugatus Straughan, 1967 (Serpulidae, Polychaeta), and an alternative hypothesis on the nature of a group of Middle Miocene microfossils from Poland Naturalis
Hove, Harry A. ten; Nishi, Eijiroh.
Spirobranchus corrugatus, a little known species, is redescribed based on ample material from Australia, Indonesia, Japan and the Seychelles. The species is characterized by a seemingly porous tube, sunk into the substrate. Characteristically, the opercular plate shows a number of radial ridges on its distal surface, resembling Middle Miocene microfossils from Poland. The ventral rim of the opercular bulb of Sp. corrugatus bears numerous ocelli, with single lenses. A comparison with similar species is given.

Zoantharia (Cnidaria: Anthozoa: Hexacorallia) of the South China Sea and Gulf of Thailand: a species list based on past reports and new photographic records Naturalis
Reimer, J.D.; Wee, H.B.; Put, A.; Hoeksema, B.W..
This study is the first review of Zoantharia species in the South China Sea and Gulf of Thailand. In addition to past literature records, new field observations are added from previously unexamined countries and regions. In total 16 species are listed, 15 of which belong to suborder Brachycnemina, and only one to suborder Macrocnemina. Two species are undescribed. The lack of Macrocnemina species is not likely indicative of a low diversity of this suborder in the South China Sea and Gulf of Thailand, but instead of an absence of research below shallow subtidal depths. As the majority of the new records from this study were randomly compiled by researchers who are not experts of Zoantharia, specific surveys by experts are needed in these two marine regions....
