Aerobic bacteria in oral cavity of Lancehead snakes (Bothrops atrox) with stomatitis Biological Sciences
Pereira, Heloisa Castro; Gomes, Dayane Olímpia; Hirano, Líria Queiroz Luz; Santos, André Luiz Quagliatto; Lima, Anna Monteiro Correia.
Stomatitis is a common disease found on snake farms, and Gram-negative bacilli are the main etiological agents that play an important role as secondary sources of viral or parasitic infections. The purpose of this work was to identify the aerobic bacteria in the oral cavity of Bothrops atrox with stomatitis. Samples for microbiological examination were collected from 12 snakes bred on a commercial snake farm for venom extraction. Samples of the secretion in the oral cavity of each serpent presenting stomatitis were collected from fang sheath, using a cotton swab with sterile alginate. The samples were incubated and cultured on Petri dishes containing blood agar and XLD agar using the agar depletion technique. Bacterial growth occurred in all analyzed...

Mechanism of action of probiotics BABT
Hemaiswarya,S; Raja,R.; Ravikumar,R.; Carvalho,Isabel S..
The modern diet doesn't provide the required amount of beneficial bacteria. Maintenance of a proper microbial ecology in the host is the main criteria to be met for a healthy growth. Probiotics are one such alternative that are supplemented to the host where by and large species of Lactobacillus, Bifidobacterium and Saccharomyces are considered as main probiotics. The field of probiotics has made stupendous strides though there is no major break through in the identification of their mechanism of action. They exert their activity primarily by strengthening the intestinal barrier and immunomodulation. The main objective of the study was to provide a deep insight into the effect of probiotics against the diseases, their applications and proposed mechanism of...

Admission of foreign citizens to the general teaching hospital of bologna, northeastern Italy: An epidemiological and clinical survey BJID
Sabbatani,Sergio; Baldi,Elena; Manfredi,Roberto; Chiodo,Francesco.
BACKGROUND: The emergency regarding recent immigration waves into Italy makes continued healthcare monitoring of these populations necessary. METHODS: Through a survey of hospital admissions carried out during the last five years at the S. Orsola-Malpighi General Hospital of Bologna (Italy), all causes of admission of these subjects were evaluated, together with their correlates. Subsequently, we focused on admissions due to infectious diseases. All available data regarding foreign citizens admitted as inpatients or in Day-Hospital settings of our teaching hospital from January 1, 1999, to March 31, 2004, were assessed. Diagnosis-related group (DRG) features, and single discharge diagnoses, were also evaluated, and a further assessment of infectious...

Immunogenetics and infectious diseases: special reference to the mayor histocompatibility complex BJID
Alves,Crésio; Souza,Thaisa; Meyer,Isadora; Toralles,Maria Betânia P.; Brites,Carlos.
Many studies have tried to identify genetic markers for infectious diseases, some of them have focused on human leukocyte antigens (HLA). The products of HLA genes interact with surface-specific receptors of T lymphocytes, resulting in activation of the host's immune response. Association of bacterial, viral, parasitic and fungal infections with the host's HLA has been widely investigated. The type and strength of this association differs among distinct populations, as well as among racial and/or ethnic groups. The new molecular methods for the identification of the HLA alleles, and the resulting new nomenclature, have contributed to a better understanding of this system. Unfortunately, this information has not been adequately transmitted to clinicians,...

Endothelial cells, tissue factor and infectious diseases BJMBR
Lopes-Bezerra,L.M.; Filler,S.G..
Tissue factor is a transmembrane procoagulant glycoprotein and a member of the cytokine receptor superfamily. It activates the extrinsic coagulation pathway, and induces the formation of a fibrin clot. Tissue factor is important for both normal homeostasis and the development of many thrombotic diseases. A wide variety of cells are able to synthesize and express tissue factor, including monocytes, granulocytes, platelets and endothelial cells. Tissue factor expression can be induced by cell surface components of pathogenic microorganisms, proinflammatory cytokines and membrane microparticles released from activated host cells. Tissue factor plays an important role in initiating thrombosis associated with inflammation during infection, sepsis, and organ...

Porcine circovirus 2 (PCV2) increases the expression of endothelial adhesion/junction molecules BJM
Marks,Fernanda S.; Almeida,Laura L.; Driemeier,David; Canal,Cláudio; Barcellos,David E.S.N.; Guimarães,Jorge A.; Reck,José.
Abstract Porcine circovirus type 2 (PCV2) is the primary causative agent of porcine circovirus disease, a complex multisystem syndrome in domestic pigs. Despite the significant economic losses caused by porcine circovirus disease, the mechanisms of pathogenesis underlying the clinical findings remain largely unclear. As various reports have highlighted the potential key role of vascular lesions in the pathogenesis of porcine circovirus disease, the aim of this work was to investigate effects of PCV2 infection on vascular endothelial cells, focusing on cell viability and expression of adhesion/junction molecules. PCV2 infection reduced endothelial cell viability, while viral infection did not affected the viability of several other classical cell lines....

Cruz,Astrid Paola Mattheis; Aquino,Maria Helena Consedey de; Helayael,Michel José Sales Abdalla; Silva,Márcio Roberto; Ribeiro,João Batista; Hott,Marcos Cicarini; Magalhães Júnior,Walter Coelho Pereira de; Mendonça,Juliana França Monteiro de; Souza,Guilherme Nunes de.
ABSTRACT: Equine infectious anaemia (EIA) is a globally distributed disease caused by a lentivirus. EIA is a notifiable disease that should be reported to the Official Veterinary Service (SVO). Outbreaks are controlled by sacrificing the EIA-positive animals. The study analysed the prevalence of EIA in 165 Equidae seized on public roads in the municipality of Petrópolis, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, from 2015 to 2018. After the seizure and identification of the Equidae, blood was collected to diagnose EIA. A prevalence of 11.8% was observed among the Equidae seized, and the main risk factor was the region of seizure. A kernel-smoothed map showed areas with the highest density of EIA-positive Equidae in the centre and to the east of the study area. In this...

A STUDY OF ASSOCIATION BETWEEN ELISA RESPONSE TO INFECTIOUS DISEASE AGENTS AND CALVING INTERVAL IN CATTLE IN THE TROPICS OF MÉXICO Ciência Rural
Barajas-Rojas,José Alfonso; Riemann,Hans; Franti,Charles.
Forty eight cows of Holstein-Zebu crosses with at least one completed pregnancy were tested for antibodies to 20 disease agents. The testing was performed within one month (average two weeks) after calving when the IgG level constantly reaches its lowest value during the cows reproductive cycle. The results indicate that increasing levels of IgG against Leptospira interrogans serovar hardjo and Mycobacterium paratuberculosis may be associated with an increased calving interval. Increase in calving intervals could not be explained by age of cows or their genotypic characteristics.

Kurissio,Jacqueline Kazue; Rodrigues,Marianna Vaz; Taniwaki,Sueli Akemi; Zanutto,Marcelo de Souza; Filoni,Claudia; Galdino,Maicon Vinícius; Araújo Júnior,João Pessoa.
ABSTRACT: Felis catus gammaherpesvirus 1 (FcaGHV1) may causes an asymptomatic infection that result in an efficient transmission and subsequently dissemination of the virus in feline population. This study used molecular detection by qPCR (quantitative PCR) based on DNA polymerase gene fragment amplification to evaluate the occurrence of FcaGHV1 and its correlation with other feline viral pathogens, such as Carnivore protoparvovirus 1 (CPPV-1), Felid alphaherpesvirus 1 (FeHV-1), and feline retroviruses such as feline immunodeficiency virus (FIV) and feline leukemia virus (FeLV). Of the 182 blood samples evaluated 23.6% (43/182) were positives for FcaGHV1. Approximately 37.9% (33/87) of the samples that tested positive for retrovirus were also were positive...

SEROLOGICAL SCREENING FOR INFECTOUS CATTLE DISEASES: III. CHOICE OF SENTINEL ANIMALS Ciência Rural
Rojas,José Alfonso Barajas-; Riemann,Hans; Franti,Charles.
A herd of Cattle (Holstein-Zebu crosses) was screened bimonthly for two years by ELISA for IgG antibodies to infectious disease agents. The herd was composed of 3 age groups: Young animals ( < 4 months of age), developing animals (4-36 months of age) and producing animals ( > 36 months of age). Ali young animals received colostrum within two hours after birth. The overall consistency of ELISA results, i. e agreement between two consecutive tests was about the same for the three age groups and was lowest for infections of intermediate prevalence (40-50%). The interpretation of changes in seroprevalence is most straight forward for young animals. Young animals positive at their first test reflect the immune status of their mothers while young...

The Mathematical Biology of Human Infections Ecology and Society
Nowak, Martin A; Institute for Advanced Study; nowak@ias.edu.
Humans are constant victims of infectious diseases. Biomedical research during this century has led to important insights into the molecular details of immune defense. Yet, many questions relating to disease require a quantitative understanding of the complex systems that arise from the nonlinear interactions between populations of immune cells and infectious agents. Exploration of such questions has lead to a newly emerging field of mathematical biology describing the spread of infectious agents both within and between infected individuals. This essay will discuss simple and complex models of evolution, and the propagation of virus and prion infections. Such models provide new perspectives for our understanding of infectious disease and provide guidelines...

Viroses de pequenos ruminantes. Infoteca-e

Appearance and spread of diseases among bivalve molluscs in the northern hemisphere in relation to international trade ArchiMer
Renault, Tristan.
Bivalve mollusc culture is a well-developed marine aquaculture activity in many countries around the world, notably in the northern hemisphere. During the development of this activity, numerous countries have been confronted with infectious diseases of varying severity and duration. Research has been conducted to determine the aetiology, epidemiology and control measures for these epizootics. Major epizootics in bivalve molluscs have been caused by viruses, bacteria, fungi and protozoan parasites. Moreover, important commercial relations exist in marine mollusc culture between different geographical areas. This must be taken into account in explaining the appearance and the spread of some infectious diseases in several countries around the world. The...
