Arthropods obtained from the Amazonian tree species "Cupiuba" (Goupia glabra) by repeated canopy fogging with natural Pyrethrum Acta Amazonica
ADIS,Joachim; HARADA,Ana Yoshi; FONSECA,Claudio Ruy V. da; PAARMANN,Wilfried; RAFAEL,José Albertino.
Two canopies of a widely distributed Amazonian tree species, Goupia glabra Aubl. (Celastraceae, height 38 and 45m) were fogged several times with 1% natural pyrethrum during the rainy and dry seasons (1991-1994) in the Adolpho Ducke Forest Reserve near Manaus/Brazil. Between 50 and 158 ind./m2 of arthropods were obtained per tree and fogging event. Hymenoptera, mostly Formicidae, and Diptcra dominated. A total of 95 ant species occurred on a single tree. Most ants were permanently foraging in the canopy and their recolonization after fogging seems to follow stochastic pathways. Data indicated an interaction between - 1) predating Formicidae and gall building Cecidomyiidae and - 2) Cecidomyiidae and the parasitic Hymenoptera.

Interactions between cationic liposomes and drugs or biomolecules Anais da ABC (AABC)
CARMONA-RIBEIRO,ANA MARIA.
Multiple uses for synthetic cationic liposomes composed of dioctadecyldimethylammonium bromide (DODAB) bilayer vesicles are presented. Drugs or biomolecules can be solubilized or incorporated in the cationic bilayers. The cationic liposomes themselves can act as antimicrobial agents causing death of bacteria and fungi at concentrations that barely affect mammalian cells in culture. Silica particles or polystyrene microspheres can be functionalized by coverage with DODAB bilayers or phospholipid monolayers. Negatively charged antigenic proteins can be carried by the cationic liposomes which generate a remarkable immunoadjuvant action. Nucleotides or DNA can be physically adsorbed to the cationic liposomes to be transferred to mammalian cells for gene...

Community structure of turf algae in interactions with massive corals in Tayrona National Natural Park, Colombian Caribbean Boletín de Investigaciones
Gómez-Cubillos,Catalina; Gavio,Brigitte; Zea,Sven.
ABSTRACT Algal turfs are currently the most abundant benthic component on most coral reefs. Their wide distribution, functional role and positive response to factors that stress corals confirm their importance in the functioning of reef ecosystem. It has been shown that species composition, structural development and sediment retention influence their capacity to kill and displace adjacent live coral tissue. In this study in two reefs of the Tayrona National Natural Park (Colombian Caribbean), the variation in structure of turfs growing on and in direct interaction with massive live corals was determined, and its structural complexity was related with its sediment retention capacity. For that, the taxonomical composition was determined, and canopy height,...

Interactions Among Ecosystem Services Across Land Uses in a Floodplain Agroecosystem Ecology and Society
Bennett, Elena M.; Department of Natural Resource Sciences and McGill School of Environment, McGill University; elena.bennett@mcgill.ca.
Managing human-dominated landscapes such as agroecosystems is one of the main challenges facing society today. Decisions about land-use management in agroecosystems involve spatial and temporal trade-offs. The key scales at which these trades-offs occur are poorly understood for most systems, and quantitative assessments of the services provided by agroecosystems under different combinations of land uses are rare. To fill these knowledge gaps, we measured 12 ecosystem services (ES), including climate regulation, gas regulation, soil stability, nutrient regulation, habitat quality, raw material production, food production, fishing, sports, recreation, education, and social relationships, in seven common land-use types at three spatial scales, i.e., patch,...

Study of the interaction of fish myosin with the products of lipid oxidation: The case of aldehydes ArchiMer
Chopin, Christine; Kone, Matenin; Serot, Thierry.
The aim of this study was to assess the modifications of fish myosin induced by interactions with four aldehydes: hexanal, 2-hexenal, 2,4-hexadienal, and 2,6-nonadienal. These compounds are generated during lipid oxidation and are known to have an impact on the functional properties of proteins. The interactions between protein and aldehydes were highlighted by measuring the content of aldehydes in the gaseous phase by the SPME-GC technique. Results show that the partition of aldehydes between the proteinaceous system and the gas phase decreases with time, except for hexanal. This decrease is proportional to the number of carbons and double bonds. The reaction between myosin and unsaturated aldehydes induces a decrease in the free sulfhydryl and amino...

Comparative Proteomics of Ostreid Herpesvirus 1 and Pacific Oyster Interactions With Two Families Exhibiting Contrasted Susceptibility to Viral Infection ArchiMer
Leprêtre, Maxime; Faury, Nicole; Segarra, Amelie; Claverol, Stéphane; Degremont, Lionel; Palos-ladeiro, Mélissa; Armengaud, Jean; Renault, Tristan; Morga, Benjamin.
Massive mortality outbreaks affecting Pacific oysters (Crassostrea gigas) spat/juveniles are often associated with the detection of a herpesvirus called ostreid herpesvirus type 1 (OsHV-1). In this work, experimental infection trials of C. gigas spat with OsHV-1 were conducted using two contrasted Pacific oyster families for their susceptibility to viral infection. Live oysters were sampled at 12, 26, and 144 h post infection (hpi) to analyze host-pathogen interactions using comparative proteomics. Shotgun proteomics allowed the detection of seven viral proteins in infected oysters, some of them with potential immunomodulatoy functions. Viral proteins were mainly detected in susceptible oysters sampled at 26 hpi, which correlates with the mortality and...

Coastal phytoplankton community dynamics and coexistence driven by intragroup density-dependence, light and hydrodynamics ArchiMer
Barraquand, F.; Picoche, C.; Maurer, Daniele; Carassou, L.; Auby, Isabelle.
Phytoplanktonic communities maintain a high diversity in a seemingly homogeneous environment, competing for the same set of resources. Many theories have been proposed to explain this coexistence despite likely competition, such as contrasted responses to temporal environmental variation. However, theory has developed at a faster pace than empirical evaluation using field data, which requires inferring drivers of community dynamics from observational time series. Here, we combine autoregressive models with a data set spanning more than 20 years of phytoplankton counts every two weeks, together with nutrients and physical variables. By comparing models dominated by nutrients or physical variables (hydrodynamics and climate), we first explore which abiotic...

Effects of nitrogen limitation on Dunaliella sp.–Alteromonas sp. interactions: from mutualistic to competitive relationships. ArchiMer
Le Chevanton, Myriam; Garnier, Matthieu; Lukomska, Ewa; Schreiber, Nathalie; Cadoret, Jean-paul; Saint-jean, Bruno; Bougaran, Gael.
Interactions between photosynthetic and non-photosynthetic microorganisms play an essential role in natural aquatic environments and the contribution of bacteria and microalgae to the nitrogen cycle can lead to both competitive and mutualistic relationships. Nitrogen is considered to be, with phosphorus and iron, one of the main limiting nutrients for primary production in the oceans and its availability experiences large temporal and geographical variations. For these reasons, it is important to understand how competitive and mutualistic interactions between photosynthetic and heterotrophic microorganisms are impacted by nitrogen limitation. In a previous study performed in batch cultures, the addition of a selected bacterial strain of Alteromonas sp....

Étude numérique et expérimentale du comportement d’hydroliennes ArchiMer
Mycek, Paul.
This manuscript deals with the numerical and experimental characterisation of the behaviour of marine current turbines. In the experimental part, trials were run at IFREMER’s wave and current flume tank in Boulogne-Sur-Mer, on prototypes of three-bladed horizontal axis turbines. Configurations with one single turbine on the one hand, and two turbines aligned with the incoming flow on the other hand, were considered for a large range of TSRs and, when relevant, of inter-device distances. The behaviour of the turbines is analysed in terms of performances (power and thrust coefficients) and development of the wake. The effects of the ambient turbulence intensity rate are also considered. Besides, numerical computations, obtained from a tridimensional unsteady...

Uptake of dissolved inorganic and organic nitrogen by the benthic toxic dinoflagellate Ostreopsis cf. ovata ArchiMer
Jauzein, Cecile; Couet, Douglas; Blasco, Thierry; Lemee, Rodolphe.
Environmental factors that shape dynamics of benthic toxic blooms are largely unknown. In particular, for the toxic dinoflagellate Ostreopsis cf. ovata, the importance of the availability of nutrients and the contribution of the inorganic and organic pools to growth need to be quantified in marine coastal environments. The present study aimed at characterizing N-uptake of dissolved inorganic and organic sources by O. cf. ovata cells, using the 15N-labelling technique. Experiments were conducted taking into account potential interactions between nutrient uptake systems as well as variations with the diel cycle. Uptake abilities of O. cf. ovata were parameterized for ammonium (NH4+), nitrate (NO3−) and N-urea, from the estimation of kinetic and inhibition...

Interactions microalgues-bactéries en système expérimental bispécifique : effets sur la croissance de Dunaliella sp. ArchiMer
Le Chevanton, Myriam.
The use of algae-bacteria mixed culture has been suggested to improve performance of industrial microalgae culture. The present study aims to investigate impact of selected bacteria on Dunaliella sp. growth. 97 bacteria strains were isolated from a variety of marine microalgae cultures. The diversity of strains revealed members of α-and γ-proteobacteria, Cytophaga-Flavobacterium-Bacteroides and grampositive. A two-phase approach was then implemented to select bacteria that improve Dunaliella sp. growth, using an original high-throughput experimental device. Although a majority of bacteria induced performance reduction for Dunaliella sp., some resulted in significant improvements. In nitrogenlimited batch culture, the Alteromonas sp. bacteria demonstrated a...

Bacterial Dynamics in a Microphytobenthic Biofilm: a Tidal Mesocosm Approach ArchiMer
Agogue, Helene; Mallet, Clarisse; Orvain, Francis; De Crignis, Margot; Mornet, Francoise; Dupuy, Christine.
In intertidal mudflats, during low tide exposure, microphytobenthos (MPB) migrate vertically through the surface sediment and form, with the heterotrophic bacteria, a transient biofilm. Inside this biofilm, multiple interactions exist between MPB and bacteria. These micro-organisms secrete a wide range of extracellular polymeric substances (EPS), which are major components of the biofilm matrix. In this study, we used a tidal mesocosm experiment in order to decipher the interactions of the MPB-EPS-bacteria complex within the biofilm. We tried to determine if the EPS could control bacterial activities and/or production and/or richness according to the age of the biofilm and to the immersion/emersion period. The dynamics of biomasses of MPB and prokaryotes,...
