Lead is one of the heavy metals most used in industry. Poisoning due to long-term lead exposure is known as saturnism, and is an occupational illness that has been known for many years. Lead is highly toxic and can compromise the structural and functional patterns of organs and systems. The aim of this study was to examine the lungs and kidneys of fetuses from female Wistar rats exposed to lead acetate. In this study, the lungs and kidneys of 20 fetuses from female rats that had previously been treated with lead acetate were dissected, fixed, embedded in paraffin and stained with hematoxylin and eosin. Macroscopic changes to the shape, color and consistency of organs from fetuses treated with this heavy metal were observed, in comparison with organs from...

Normal and Variant Anatomy of Renal Hilar Structures and its Clinical Significance International Journal of Morphology
Trivedi,S; Athavale,S; Kotgiriwar,S.
Advanced imaging techniques have resulted in increasing use of minimally invasive approaches for nephron sparing surgeries of kidney. Need for precise knowledge of normal and variant anatomy of vascular pedicle of kidney is thus justified. Ample literature is available on the variations in the intrarenal vascular pattern of the kidney, which are seen frequently. But the variation in arrangement of structures at the renal hilum has not gained much interest up till now. One hundred (51 right and 49 left) embalmed kidneys were utilized for the present study. Careful dissection of renal hilar structures was carried out to observe antero-posterior relationship of structures at the hilum of the kidney. In majority (73%), the arrangement was not according to the...

Tangential Algorithm for Calculation of the Fractal Dimension of Kidney Tubuli Sections International Journal of Morphology
Gil,Julio; Gimeno,Miguel; Laborda,Jesús; Nuviala,Javier; Belanche,Ignacio.
We have developed a new algorithm to calculate the fractal dimension of dog kidney proximal convoluted tubule section. This algorithm is intermediate between box-counting and perimeter-stepping algorithms. The result of this new algorithm and correlations found between fractal dimensions and other Euclidian values of these tubuli, suggest that this algorithm is adequate to calculate fractal dimensions by points

Fractal Dimension of Dog Kidney Proximal Convoluted Tubuli Sections by Mean Box-Counting Algorithm International Journal of Morphology
Gil,Julio; Gimeno,Miguel; Laborda,Jesús; Nuviala,Javier.
The possibility of characterizing the proximal convoluted tubuli of the dog kidney by means of a unique and objective value, is an attractive idea in order to automate its recognition in anatomy and patology. For this, we obtained a fractal dimension of the proximal convoluted tubuli in the dog kidney by mean box-counting method. The fractal value we obtained is a flat dimension, and it is different than the line fractal dimension of the dog kidney arterial pattern, which was previously calculated by us (Gil et al., 2006). Thus, from optical microscopy images, we are able to obtain a single quantitative measure to discriminate these dog kidney components. This measures can use to automate its recognition. Fractal geometry provides many advantages when...

Histology and Renal Lipoperoxidation in Rats Exercised on a Treadmill and Submitted to Water Restriction International Journal of Morphology
Lorençoni,Roselene Modolo Regueiro; Pelai,Elisa Bizetti; Godoy,Moacir Fernandes; dos Santos,Alice Cristina Antonio; Miyoshi,Lívia Hissae; de Oliveira,Rebeca Nicolás Paronetto; Padovani,Carlos Roberto; Fregonesi,Cristina Elena Prado Teles; Camargo Filho,José Carlos Silva.
Physical effort stimulates an increase in oxygen consumption in tissues, generating toxic chemical species derived from oxygen (ROS), which are considered the initiators of the lipid peroxidation process (LPO), the major mechanism of cellular injury. As the essential mechanism for maintaining the electrolyte balance depends on an effective kidney function, oxidative stress in this organ can be a key factor in the development and persistence of hypertension. This study aimed to determine the kidney changes induced by a combination of fluid restriction and exercise in rats. The study consisted of 24 male Wistar rats of 90 days of age, divided into four groups, two of which were submitted to water restriction and exercise on a treadmill.Twenty-four hours...

Bilateral Origin of the Testicular Arteries from the Lower Polar Accessory Renal Arteries International Journal of Morphology
Panagouli,Eleni; Lolis,Evangelos; Venieratos,Dionysios.
The gonadal arteries (testicular or ovarian arteries) emerge normally from the lateral aspect of the abdominal aorta, a little inferior to the renal arteries. Several other sites of origin of these arteries have been recorded with the renal and accessory renal arteries being the most common. In the present case report, the testicular arteries originated from the lower polar accessory renal arteries in both sides. The testicular veins followed had the usual origin and course, while an accessory renal vein was observed only in the right side. These anomalies were combined with an abnormal left ureter exiting from the lower pole of the kidney. Only one male cadaver among 77 adult human cadavers of Caucasian origin presented this set of variations (frequency:...
