Desempenho agronômico da chia sob diferentes arranjos espaciais 196
Teodoro Maia, João Paulo; Garcia da Silva, Wellington; Vieira Silva, Ariana; Duarte Giunti, Otavio; Henrique Sartori, Raul Henrique.
The nutritional benefits and functional potential of chia seeds have been highlighted in the literature. However, few studies address the planting system of the species, especially its spatial arrangement. Thus, this study proposes to evaluate chia cultivation under different spatial arrangements, aiming at its agronomic performance. The experimental design was randomized in blocks in a 3×2 factorial scheme, with three inter-row spacings (0.30, 0.45, and 0.60 m), two plant densities per linear meter (7.5 and 15 plants m−1), and four replications. Plant height, stem diameter, leaf area index, dry matter, chlorophyll index, leaf nitrogen content, panicle size, harvest index, and yield were evaluated. The evaluated spatial arrangements did not influence plant...

Antar,Guilherme Medeiros; Harley,Raymond Mervyn; Sano,Paulo Takeo; Drew,Bryan Thomas.
ABSTRACT Lepechinia is a New World genus of Lamiaceae with ca. 45 species. There is ongoing controversy regarding the recognition and delimitation of Lepechinia that occur in Brazil. After fieldwork and herbaria consultation we recognize two species of Lepechinia in Brazil: Lepechinia speciosa, distributed within the Mantiqueira region, and Lepechinia annae, endemic to Serra do Caparaó. A taxonomic revision of the genus Lepechinia in Brazil is provided including descriptions, lectotypifications, a distribution map, a photographic plate, an identification key, a conservation assessment and comments on both the taxonomy and ecology of the two species.

Resupinate Dimorphy, a novel pollination strategy in two-lipped flowers of Eplingiella (Lamiaceae) Acta Botanica
Harley,Raymond M.; Giulietti,Ana Maria; Abreu,Ivan Silva; Bitencourt,Cassia; Oliveira,Favizia F. de; Endress,Peter K..
ABSTRACT This work provides a summary of the typical floral structure of subtribe Hyptidinae (Lamiaceae), in which both style and stamens are declinate within or near the concave anterior corolla lobe. Cross-pollination is facilitated by protandry, acting in conjunction with the explosive release of the stamens and pollen. In contrast, we report that in the three species of the genus Eplingiella we found individuals with either resupinate or non-resupinate flowers, which represents a novel floral dimorphism. In these species of Eplingiella, the style occupies a position towards the posterior corolla lip and opposes the declinate stamens. Thus, in non-resupinate flowers the pollinating bee receives pollen on its ventral side and makes contact with the style...

Germination and biochemical components of Salvia hispanica L. seeds at different salinity levels and temperatures Agronomy
Paiva, Emanoela Pereira de; Torres, Salvador Barros; Alves, Tatianne Raianne Costa; Sá, Francisco Vanies da Silva; Leite, Moadir de Sousa; Dombroski, Jeferson Luiz Dallabona.
Most plant species are susceptible to the effects of salinity, such as increases in osmotic potentials and deleterious ionic effects, which in turn affect water absorption in plants and, consequently, compromise germination and seedling growth. Hence, this study aimed to evaluate the effects of salinity on the germination, initial growth, and physiological and biochemical components of S. hispanica seedlings at different temperatures. The experimental design was completely randomized, with treatments distributed in a 5 x 4 factorial scheme with five saline concentrations (0.0 (control), 4.5, 9.0, 13.5, and 18.0 dS m-1) four temperature regimes (20, 25, 30, and 20-30°C), and four replicates of 50 seeds per treatment. The experiment evaluated the...

Nascimento,Jeferson C.; Barbosa,Luiz C.A.; Paula,Vanderlucia F.; David,Jorge M.; Fontana,Renato; Silva,Luiz A.M.; França,Robson S..
This work describes the chemical composition and antimicrobial activity of the volatile oils of Ocimum canum and Ocimum selloi, both occurring in Jequié/BA, northeastern Brazil. The plants were collected in the winter/2005 andsummer/2006, the oils extracted by steam distillation and further analyzed by GC-MS. A total of 30 and 31 compounds was identified from the oils of O. selloi and O. canum, respectively. It was observed that the oil content of O. canum showed variation during the seasons, while the oils of O. selloi did not. Methylchavicol and linalool were the main chemical components found in the aerial parts and leaves of O. canum. This finding permitted to characterize this specimen as a new chemotype of O. canum. Regarding the aerial parts of O....

Mentha pulegium crude extracts induce thiol oxidation and potentiate hemolysis when associated to t-butyl hydroperoxide in human’s erythrocytes Anais da ABC (AABC)
BIANCHINI,MATHEUS C.; GALVÃO,DENNYURA O.; TAMBORENA,TATIANA; ALVES,CLAUDIA O.; PUNTEL,ROBSON L..
ABSTRACT Mentha pulegium (Lamiaceae) tea has been used as a traditional medicine; however, the modulatory effect of M. pulegium extracts on damage to human erythrocytes associated to t-butyl hydroperoxide (t-BHP) exposure remains to be investigated. Accordingly, we perform this study in order to test the hypothesis that aqueous and ethanolic extracts of M. pulegium could modulate the hemolysis associated to t-BHP exposure, non-protein thiol (NPSH) oxidation and lipid peroxidation (measured as thiobarbituric acid reactive substances - TBARS) in human erythrocytes. Samples were co-incubated with t-BHP (4 mmol/L) and/or aqueous or ethanolic extracts (10-1000 mg/mL) during 120 min to further analysis. We found that both extracts, when associated to t-BHP,...

Chemical composition of essential oils of peltate glandular trichomes from leaves and flowers of Lepechinia floribunda (Lamiaceae) Boletín de la Sociedad
CAMINA,JULIA L.; DAMBOLENA,JOSÉ S.; ZYGADLO,JULIO A.; ASHWORTH,LORENA.
The knowledge of the chemical composition of different plant organs provides valuable Information for clarifying the functionality of secondary metabolites. Essential oils are secondary metabolites produced and stored in secretory structures on leaves, flowers, and steam. Many studies have shown that the chemical composition of the essential oil can differ depending on the plant organ and the secretory structures even if they are at the same organ. Such differences may be the consequence that organs also differ in type and density of glandular structure. Moreover, the same type of glandular structure can change its chemical composition depending on its position within the same organ. However, no study has been evaluating the chemical composition of the...
