ALLEVIATION OF SALINITY STRESS ON Vicia faba L. PLANTS VIA SEED PRIMING WITH MELATONIN Acta biol.Colomb.
DAWOOD,Mona Gergis; EL-AWADI,Mohamed E.
Melatonin is an environmentally friendly-molecule with a potent free radical scavenger and antioxidant capacity. Two pot experiments were conducted during two successive winter seasons (2011/2012 and 2012/2013) at the wire-house of the National Research Centre, Dokki, Cairo, Egypt to study the potentiality of melatonin (100 mM and 500 mM) in alleviating the harmful effect of diluted seawater at a relatively low and high concentrations (3.85 dS/m and 7.69 dS/m, respectively) on the performance of faba bean plants. The results revealed that irrigation of faba bean plants with diluted seawater reduced growth parameters (plant height, leaves number/plant, fresh and dry weights of plant), relative water content (RWC), photosynthetic pigments (chlorophylls a, b...

Gomaa,Nasr Hassan; Hassan,Mahmoud Omar; Fahmy,Gamal Mohammad; González,Luís; Hammouda,Ola; Atteya,Atteya Mostafa.
Annual sowthistle (Sonchus oleraceus) has been reported to produce allelopathic effects. Two greenhouse experiments were conducted to estimate the allelopathic potential of both plant residue and root exudates of S. oleraceus on flavonoid composition and nodulation in a leguminous crop, Trifolium alexandrinum, and in two leguminous weeds, Melilotus indicus and T. resupinatum. The results of high performance liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (HPLC-MS/MS) showed that all three legumes contained six flavonoid aglycones: apigenin, daidzein, kaempferol, luteolin, myricetin and quercetin; and seven flavonoid glycosides: daidzin, genistin, hesperidin, hyperoside, kaempferol-7-O-glucoside, naringin and rutin. In general, both plant residue and root exudates...

The dynamics of nitrogen (N) in ryegrass intercropped with different forage species with regard to dry matter (DM) accumulation within an agroecological transition system was evaluated. Annual ryegrass was intercropped with black oats (RY + BO), white clover (RY + WC) and forage peanut (RY + FP). The experimental design was completely randomized, with three replications. The study applied the N dilution model for plant tissue which comparatively uses modifiable factors of the environment at optimal levels. The model shows decline in N concentration due to the DM accumulation of temperate grass pastures. Data were compared to model by the root mean square deviation analysis. Dilution coefficient (β), used in all pasture samples, was lower than -0.60....

Toma,Maíra Akemi; Carvalho,Teotonio Soares de; Guimarães,Amanda Azarias; Costa,Elaine Martins da; Silva,Jacqueline Savana da; Moreira,Fatima Maria de Souza.
ABSTRACT Sophora tomentosa is a pantropical legume species with potential for recovery of areas degraded by salinization, and for stabilization of sand dunes. However, few studies on this species have been carried out, and none regarding its symbiotic relationship with beneficial soil microorganisms. Therefore, this study aimed to evaluate the diversity of nitrogen-fixing bacteria isolated from nodules of Sophora tomentosa, and to analyze the occurrence of colonization of arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi on the roots of this legume in seafront soil. Thus, seeds, root nodules, and soil from the rhizosphere of Sophora tomentosa were collected. From the soil samples, trap cultures with this species were established to extract spores and to evaluate arbuscular...

Abstract Many people base their food consumption on corn flour tortillas (tortillas), which has deficiencies in protein. For that reason, the aim in this work was to incorporate Lupinus flour, a legume that is high in protein, into maize tortillas, and to evaluate the texture profile analysis (TPA) and adhesiveness in the doughs at various percentages of Lupinus flour addition, including 2.5%, 5% and 7.5%. Doughs treated with 2.5%, 5% and 7.5% Lupinus flour had higher adhesiveness values of 2.84, 2.38 and 4.62 N, respectively. The same effect was observed for the hardness measurements of the same treatments (2.38, 2.56 and 2.84 N, respectively). Based on the adhesiveness results, the doughs were subsequently used to make tortillas. The lowest tensile...

Promoters effectiveness in the improvement in iron and zinc absorption from the rice and bean Ciênc. Tecnol. Aliment.
TORRES,Larissa Catelli Rocha; AMARAL,José Eduardo Pedroso Gomes do; Canniatti-Brazaca,Solange Guidolin.
Abstract Iron and zinc are essential micronutrients for the organism functioning and their lack can result in prejudices to human health. The information about the presence of minerals in the diet are normally referred to its total concentrations, however these values do not reproduce the fraction that might be bioaccessible for the human body. The objective of this study was to evaluate if the promoters increase the iron and zinc bioaccessibility in a rice-and-bean mix. For this, four treatments were elaborated, all containing rice and bean and varied between each other regarding the promoters added to this mix. Ascorbic acid and cysteine were the promoters chosen to evaluate the influence in the iron and zinc absorption. For this purpose, the tomato was...

This paper uses the spatial analysis tools DIVA and FloraMap to identify potential areas for the in situ conservation of a set of 10 forage species. We introduce the idea of roadside verges as conservation areas and discuss the risks and opportunities of two potential scenarios for conservation. These are the introduction of mass reservoirs outside of the original areas of collection and conservation inside the area of origin. Four potential areas for in situ conservation in Latin America are identified. Although more detailed studies using remote sensing, soil information, and field reconnaissance will be necessary for a final assessment of the suggested areas as field conservation sites, we discuss the possibilities of establishing low-maintenance...
