Effect of Wood shavings on the Temperature Profile of Livestock Waste during Composting with Daily Turning CIGR Journal
Ngwabie, Ngwa Martin; Tiku, Tabe David; Yengong, Lamfu Fabrice; Manga, Ebot Veronica.
Measurements were conducted to assess the impact of wood shavings on the temperature profiles of cattle and pig manure during aerated composting. Cattle stomach waste to wood shavings were mixed in mass ratios of 100:0%, 80:25%, and 75:25% and placed in three different chambers. Pig manure was also mixed with wood shavings in ratios similar to that of cattle stomach waste and placed in three different chambers. The piles were left to compost for 21 days after which the experiment was repeated. During composting, each pile temperature and pH were measured daily. On each measurement day, the compost pile in each chamber was weighed and aerated by moving into an empty chamber. Compost samples were collected from each chamber twice a week for dry matter and...

Weight evaluation of Tabapuã cattle raised in northeastern Brazil using random-regression models Arq. Bras. Med. Vet. Zootec.
Oliveira,M.R.; Azevêdo,D.M.; Malhado,C.; Pires,L.; Martins Filho,R.; Sousa Júnior,S..
ABSTRACT The objective of this study is to compare random-regression models used to describe changes in evaluation parameters for growth in Tabapuã bovine raised in the Northeast of Brazilian. The M4532-5 random-regression model was found to be best for estimating the variation and heritability of growth characteristics in the animals evaluated. Estimates of direct additive genetic variance increased with age, while the maternal additive genetic variance demonstrated growth from birth to up to nearly 420 days of age. The genetic correlations between the first four characteristics were positive with moderate to large ranges. The greatest genetic correlation was observed between birth weight and at 240 days of age (0.82). The phenotypic correlation between...

Sporormiella as a tool for detecting the presence of large herbivores in the Neotropics Biota Neotropica
Raczka,Marco Felipe; Bush,Mark B.; Folcik,Alexandra M.; McMichael,Crystal H..
The reliability of using the abundance of Sporormiella spores as a proxy for the presence and abundance of megaherbivores was tested in southern Brazil. Mud-water interface samples from nine lakes, in which cattle-use was categorized as high, medium, or low, were assayed for Sporormiella representation. The sampling design allowed an analysis of both the influence of the number of animals using the shoreline and the distance of the sampling site from the nearest shoreline. Sporormiella was found to be a reliable proxy for the presence of large livestock. The concentration and abundance of spores declined from the edge of the lake toward the center, with the strongest response being in sites with high livestock use. Consistent with prior studies in...

Sun,Deng-Sheng; Jin,Xiao; Shi,Binlin; Xu,Yuanqing; Yan,Sumei.
ABSTRACT Yucca schidigera extract (YSE) has received much interest in the application of manure deodorization and hazardous gas mitigation in livestock rearing conditions. The main objective of this review article was to summarize the current knowledge regarding YSE towards its gas mitigation from livestock excrement. Saponins have been considered to be vital components of YSE in odor control and gas reduction in intensive farming industry due to their potentials in lowering methane for ruminants and ammonia for monogastric animals. This review article mainly covered the studies in ruminants, especially focused on in vitro environment. It also summarized possible reasons of the conflicting results among studies from the perspective of experimental design...

Invasin gimB found in a bovine intestinal Escherichia coli with an adherent and invasive profile BJM
Matter,Letícia B.; Spricigo,Denis A.; Tasca,Caiane; de Vargas,Agueda C..
The invasin gimB (genetic island associated with human newborn meningitis) is usually found in ExPEC (Extraintestinal Pathogenic Escherichia coli) such as UPEC (uropathogenic E. coli), NMEC (neonatal meningitis E. coli) and APEC (avian pathogenic E. coli). In NMEC, gimB is associated with the invasion process of the host cells. Due to the importance of E. coli as a zoonotic agent and the scarce information about the frequency of gimB-carrying strains in different animal species, the aim of this study was to investigate the presence of gimB in isolates from bovine, swine, canine and feline clinical samples. PCR was conducted on 196 isolates and the identity of the amplicons was confirmed by sequencing. Of the samples tested, only E. coli SB278/94 from a...

Prebiotic inulin: Useful dietary adjuncts to manipulate the livestock gut microflora BJM
Samanta,A.K.; Jayapal,Natasha; Senani,S.; Kolte,A.P.; Sridhar,Manpal.
In recent years, there has been a growing appreciation on the relevance of gastrointestinal microflora in both ruminants and non-ruminants owing to revelation of their role in several physiological functions including digestion, nutrient utilization, pathogen exclusion, gastrointestinal development, immunity system, gut gene expression and quality of animal products. The ban imposed on the use of antibiotics and hormones in feed has compelled animal researchers in finding an alternative which could overcome the issues of conventional feed additives. Though the concept of prebiotic was evolved keeping in mind the gastrointestinal flora of human beings, presently animal researchers are exploring the efficiency of prebiotic (inulin) for modulating the gut...

Food security and livestock: The case of Latin America and the Caribbean Ciencia e Investigación Agraria
Rodríguez,Diego Ignacio; Anríquez,Gustavo; Riveros,José Luis.
The main hurdle to achieving food security in Latin America and the Caribbean is the inability of many poor families to access the foods necessary for a healthy diet, in a context in which food prices and family incomes are fundamental determinants. Animal husbandry plays a key role in the food security of the region, providing products rich in high-quality proteins and micronutrients and is vital for millions of households that depend on livestock for their livelihoods to generate income and have access to basic services. Furthermore, the production and trade of livestock products contributes to the stabilization of the food supply, acting as a buffer during economic crises and disasters both at the individual and community levels. Small farm agriculture...

Abstract Cheese production is one of the most common forms of valorization of dairy production, adding value and preserving milk. Various types of cheese produced from raw and pasteurized milk are known worldwide. In the present work, we are interested in studying the effect of the type of milk (raw and pasteurized) of two species (cow and goat) on the yield and physicochemical characteristics of the fresh cheese. In the northeastern Algeria, on 5 cow farms and 3 goat farms; 5 raw and 5 pasteurized milk cheese manufacturing trials were conducted. The analysis of the results of the 80 samples of milk and cheese of both cow and goat species showed that the latter contained significantly more fat and protein than cow's milk and that pasteurized milk contained...

Sheep faeces decomposition and nutrient release across an environmental gradient in Southern Patagonia Ecología austral
Bahamonde,Héctor A; Gargaglione,Verónica; Peri,Pablo L.
In Southern Patagonia, most of the land ranging from the mountains to the sea in contrasting environmental conditions is devoted to extensive sheep farming. Existing estimations indicate that in ecosystems under livestock use, around 85% of the nitrogen (N) returning to the soil is through animal feces and urine. However, there is a lack of information concerning the rate of nutrient return into the soil from animal feces in Southern Patagonia. In this study, we evaluated the rate of sheep faeces decomposition and nutrient (N, P, Ca and K) release in three different ecological areas of Southern Pat agonia, representing a West to East environmental gradient. Samples of fresh sheep dung were collected in the field, processed in the laboratory and located in...
