Structural controls on polyphase hydrothermal dolomitization in the Kinta Valley, Malaysia: Paragenesis and regional tectono-magmatism ArchiMer
Ramkumar, Mu; Siddiqui, Numair Ahmed; Mathew, Manoj; Sautter, Benjamin; Hui, Poon Xin; Nagarajan, R.; Breitfeld, H. Tim; Santosh, M.; Menier, David; Poppelreiter, Michael.
In the eastern side of the Malay Peninsula, thick successions of limestone formations preserve important records of the Mesozoic and Cenozoic tectonic events. Here we investigate the strata- and fracture-bound hydrothermal dolomites in the Palaeozoic carbonates of the Kinta Valley, western Peninsular Malaysia. Based on their textural and morphologic characteristics, structural relationships with the host rock, different facies types, and associations with hydrothermal calcite and low-grade metamorphic marble, we attempt to trace their polyphase origin and relationship with thereto-tectonic events of the region. A detailed evaluation of the nature of brecciation and crystallization of polyphase dolomites, dolomitic limestones, limestones and marble, under...

Scleractinian corals (Fungiidae, Agariciidae and Euphylliidae) of Pulau Layang-Layang, Spratly Islands, with a note on Pavona maldivensis (Gardiner, 1905) ArchiMer
Waheed, Zarinah; Benzoni, Francesca; Van Der Meij, Sancia E. T.; Terraneo, Tullia I.; Hoeksema, Bert W..
Layang-Layang is a small island part of an oceanic atoll in the Spratly Islands off Sabah, Malaysia. As the reef coral fauna in this part of the South China Sea is poorly known, a survey was carried out in 2013 to study the species composition of the scleractinian coral families Fungiidae, Agariciidae and Euphylliidae. A total of 56 species was recorded. The addition of three previously reported coral species brings the total to 59, consisting of 32 Fungiidae, 22 Agariciidae, and five Euphylliidae. Of these, 32 species are new records for Layang-Layang, which include five rarely reported species, i.e., the fungiids Lithophyllon ranjithi, Podabacia sinai, Sandalolitha boucheti, and the agariciids Leptoseris kalayaanensis and L. troglodyta. The coral fauna...

Anaphylactic shock following the bite of a wild Kayan slow loris (Nycticebus kayan): implications for slow loris conservation J. Venom. Anim. Toxins incl. Trop. Dis.
Madani,George; Nekaris,K Anne-Isola.
Background Asian slow lorises (Nycticebus spp.) are one of few known venomous mammals, yet until now only one published case report has documented the impact of their venomous bite on humans. We describe the reaction of a patient to the bite of a subadult Nycticebus kayan, which occurred in the Mulu District of Sarawak in 2012.Findings Within minutes of the bite, the patient experienced paraesthesia in the right side of the jaw, ear and right foot. By 40 minutes, swelling of the face was pronounced. The patient was admitted to Mulu National Park Health Clinic/Klinik Kesihatan Taman Mulu Tarikh, at which time he was experiencing: swollen mouth, chest pain, mild abdominal pain, nausea, numbness of the lips and mouth, shortness of breath, weakness, agitation...

Revision of the Euagathis species (Hymenoptera: Braconidae: Bassinae) from the Sunda Islands Naturalis
Simbolotti, G.; Achterberg, C. van.
The species of the genus Euagathis Szépligeti, 1900 (Braconidae: Bassinae (= Agathidinae)) from the Greater and Lesser Sunda Islands (including West Malaysia) are revised and keyed. The subfamily name Bassinae Nees, 1812, is used because it is senior to the commonly used subfamily name Agathidinae Nees, 1814. Twenty-two species are recognized, of which nine are new. The genus Holcotroticus Cameron, 1902, is synonymized with Euagathis Szepligeti, 1900, and Euagathis ruficollis (Cameron, 1902) is a new combination. The following species are synonymized: Euagathis pilosa Szépligeti, 1902, and E. creophora Cameron, 1905, with E. clathrata (Brullé, 1846); E. rufonigra Enderlein, 1920, with E. ruficollis (Cameron, 1902); Euagathis variabilis Enderlein, 1920,...

Large-eyed Onthophagus species of Sundaland: a key and descriptions of five new species (Coleoptera: Scarabaeidae) Naturalis
Krikken, J.; Huijbregts, J..
Seven species of the scarab genus Onthophagus Latreille are keyed and described. They are all characterized by the possession of large eyes (in full-face view), a feature possibly related to nocturnal habits. Traditionally these species are placed in Micronthophagus Balthasar, which is here argued to be a polyphyletic group. Five species are new: paroculus (Sumatra), setoculus (Sumatra), sideki (Sumatra, Borneo), phillippsorum (Borneo), collinsi (Borneo). Of two old species, O. drescheri Paulian and rotundicollis Lansberge, new records are given.

On the biogeographic range of the genus Teleopsis Rondani (Diptera: Diopsidae), with redescription of Teleopsis sykesii from India and description of a new species from Borneo Naturalis
Feijen, H.R.; Feijen, C..
The genotype of the genus Teleopsis Rondani, T. sykesii (Westwood) from India is redescribed: Teleopsis onopyxus Séguy is now considered a junior synonym of T. sykesii. T. onopyxus was described from Madagascar, but this type locality must be due to mislabelling. T. sykesii occurs in India and perhaps in Myanmar. Lectotypes are designated for T. sykesii and T. onopyxus. From Sarawak and Sabah, Teleopsis pallifacies spec. nov. is described. Among its type series of more than 200 specimens, single flies occurred with labels from Australia and Irian Jaya. These are also considered to be mislabelled. Teleopsis now becomes a purely Oriental genus with no representatives in the Australasian or Malagasy regions. For T. sykesii and T. pallifacies spec. nov., data...

Documentation of inherited knowledge on wild edible fungi from Malyasia Naturalis
Abdullah, F.; Rusea, G..
The gradual loss in traditional knowledge on wild edible fungi is a common phenomenon the world over, including Malaysia. A documentation of known edible fungi in Malaysia was executed, with the objective of salvaging traditional knowledge on the identification and edibility of these mushrooms, particularly from her village communities. Among those that have been successfully documented in this study were Cookeina and Galiella of the class Ascomycetes and Termitomyces, Schizophyllum, Hygrocybe, Lentinus, Calvatia, Calostoma and Auricularia, from the Basidiomycetes which make up a total of 13 or 14 species belonging to 9 genera. It is hoped that this documentation will contribute towards an updated scientific identification, including their genetic...

The status of Cecropia (Urticaceae) introductions in Malesia: addressing the confusion Naturalis
Conn, B.J.; Hadiah, J.T.; Webber, B.L..
As part of the great global movement of plants in the 18th and 19th centuries, many valuable and commercial plants were sent from the Neotropics to Europe as seeds or as live specimens. Cecropia (Urticaceae) was in cultivation in England in 1789, yet species delimitation was not well-understood until much later, long after subsequent introductions to other tropical regions where alien populations are now invasive. The earliest record of Cecropia being cultivated in Malesia is based on material of C. peltata thought to have been sent from the Royal Botanic Gardens Kew to ’s Lands Plantentuin (Buitenzorg) in Jawa, Indonesia, sometime between 1862 and early 1868. In 1902, C. peltata was first cultivated in the botanical gardens of Singapore and introduced to...
