Case report of osteomyelitis of the mandible in osteopetrosis and management considerations ArchiMer
Allal, Sarah; Rabuel, Valentin; Gengler, Charline; Douchet, Catherine; Allal, Francois; Zwetyenga, Narcisse.
Introduction and importance Osteopetrosis is a poorly known and probably underdiagnosed pathology. It is caused by various genetic abnormalities resulting in osteoclast dysfunction. Functional and aesthetic consequences have a major impact on the patient’s quality of life. Ten percent of osteopetrosis cases develop osteomyelitis that usually involves the mandible. Management of this complication remains complex and often unsatisfactory. Case presentation We report a case of a 62-year-old woman with osteopetrosis, complicated by mandibular osteomyelitis with intra-oral bone exposure and submental fistulas. Management was performed with antibiotic therapy and surgical necrotic resection. This cured the fistulas but the bone exposure persisted. Discussion...

Analysis of the Lingula Shapes in Macerated Mandibles of Brazilian Individuals International Journal of Morphology
Alves,Nilton; Deana,Naira Figueiredo.
The lingula of the mandible is a bone projection that limits medially the mandibular foramen, which is the region where the inferior alveolar neurovascular bundle penetrates. The lingula is an important anatomical landmark used in maxillofacial surgeries and to block the inferior alveolar nerve. The aim of this study was to analyze the different types of lingula found in mandibles of Brazilian individuals, considering aspects such as gender and race. One hundred thirty-two macerated mandibles of Brazilian adult individuals of both sexes, black and white skin colors, were used. The lingula was classified into four types: triangular, truncated, nodular and assimilated. The data were analyzed using Chi-square test and Fisher's exact test. The truncated shape...

Lima,F. J. C; Oliveira Neto,O. B; Barbosa,F. T; Dantas,L. C. S; Olave,E; Sousa-Rodrigues,C. F.
The presence of the Accessory Foramina of the Mandibular Ramus (AFMR) may be related to anaesthetic failures in the inferior alveolar nerve block and complications in the ramus surgeries. The purpose of the present investigation was to determine the occurrence of the AFMR in adults and, when present, measure its distance to the Mandibular Foramen (MF), to the Mandibular Lingula (ML) and to the posterior margin of the mandibular ramus (PM), comparing data obtained in both sides of the mandible. Thirty dry human mandibles were selected to the present study. The AFMR was considered as every foramina identified between the MF and the PM. When present, its distance to the MF, to the ML and to the PM was measured. The AFMR was identified in 15 of the 30 examined...

Study of Position, Shape, Size and Incidence of Mental Foramenand Accessory Mental Foramen in Indian Adult Human Skulls International Journal of Morphology
Singh,Rajani; Srivastav,A. K.
Paralysis of the mental nerve is one of the principal complications of surgery of the mandibular canal and mental foramen region. Therefore, identification of mental foramen is important for dental surgeons in nerve block and surgical procedures like apico curettage of mandibular premolars, amalgam filling, peridental surgery etc. to avoid injury to neurovascular bundle. Accessory mental foramina tend to exist in the apical area of the first molar and posterior or inferior area of the mental foramen. The accessory branches of the mandibular canal showed common characteristics in the course of gently sloping posterosuperior direction in the buccal surface area. Verification of the existence of accessory mental foramina would prevent accessory nerve injury...

Valdivia Gandur,Iván; Tallón Walton,Victoria; Carvalho Lobato,Patricia; Lozano de Luaces,Vicente; Manzanares Céspedes,María Cristina.
The relationship between sensitive innervation and normal mandibular bone development has been described in the literature. Therefore, neural damage is a potential cause of osseous deformities, particularly in growing subjects. The aim of this project is to present the mandible measurements obtained after the transection of the inferior alveolar nerve of growing rabbits. A specific surgical protocol was designed to carry out the unilateral nerve transection by avoiding musculoskeletal injuries. Twenty New Zealand White rabbits one week post-weaning were used, 12 as an experimental group and 8 as a control group (Sham operated). The animals were sacrificed 90 days postoperatory, and the mandibles carefully dissected. Dental midline deviation data were...

Pillay,S; Ishwarkumar,S; De Gama,B.Z; Pillay,P.
The angle of mandible is formed by the tangent line joining the posterior margin of the ramus and the base of the mandible. The angle of mandible has population-specific characteristics therefore; it is imperative to the field of forensic anthropology for age and sex determination. Literary reports regarding the use of the angle of mandible for age and sex determination vary, as some studies support it, while other studies have documented inefficiencies. Therefore, the aim of this investigation was to document the morphometry of the angle of mandible and to determine if a correlation between the angle of mandible, age and sex exists. Sixty four digital panoramic radiographs (n=128) of individuals between 16-30 years were morphometrically analysed using the...

Age and Sex-Related Geometrical Variation of Ramus mandibulae of Sus scrofa's (Mammalia: Artiodactyla) Jaws International Journal of Morphology
Hohl,Leandro dos S. L; Sicuro,Fernando L; Azorit,Concepción; Carrasco,Rafael; Rocha-Barbosa,Oscar.
Morphological variation of the ramus mandibulae of wild Sus scrofa was described and correlated to sex and age differences. Young forms (n=27, 15 males, 12 females) and adults (n=23, 13 males, 10 females) were analyzed through Geometric Morphometrics (2-D) to assess differences between groups. We found significant differences between age- and sex-related shape variations at ramus mandibulae level. Young wild boars present bulky angular process with backward oriented coronoid process, while adults show slender jaw vertical ramus, and orthogonally oriented coronoid process. The ramus mandibulae in female wild boars is more robust and bulky than in males. The morphological changes between young and adult forms are related to alterations in the osteo-muscular...

Multiple Morphological Variations in a Human Mandible International Journal of Morphology
Balcioglu,Huseyin Avni; Kose,Taha Emre; Uyanikgil,Yigit.
Bilateral mylohyoid bridging, hyperplasia of the coronoid process and bifid condylar process were detected in a human mandible. It is of great interest that such rare morphological anomalies can occur in the same mandible. Since sound understanding of the anatomical variations of the mandible, in conjunction with a careful pre-operative review of radiographs, are essential in the safe and complete performance of surgical and prosthetic rehabilitation, the authors of the present report believe that this case may add to the existing literature.
