ABSTRACT The present study aimed to evaluate nitrate acute toxicity in cultured common snook Centropomus undecimalis juveniles. Fish (20.35±6.10 g and 13.90±1.75 cm) were submitted to a control treatment (without nitrate addition) plus 20 increasing concentrations of nitrate up to 2735 mg L-1 obtained by sodium nitrate. System was semi-static, with 100 % daily water renewed and sodium nitrate addition to maintain the respective concentrations. Water temperature was 20.99±0.55 °C, dissolved oxygen 6.79±0.21 mg L-1, pH 8.23±0.10, alkalinity 141.80±7.68 mg L-1 CaCO3, salinity 33.47±3.75 g L-1, total ammonia and nitrite less than 1 mg L-1. Sex control in fish is a promising technique for aquaculture, since it gives advantages associated with one sex. The aim of this study was to investigate the feminization of common snook (Centropomus undecimalis) by oral administration of two doses of estradiol-17β (50 and 100 mg E2 kg-1 feed) and control treatment for 45 days and to evaluate their effects on the sex ratio, growth and survival of common snook juveniles. ABSTRACT Parasitic isopods of fishes usually show wide distribution and low host specificity. This study investigated the occurrence of gill parasites in 120 specimens of spotted goatfish Pseudupeneus maculatus, marine fish of great economic importance for fishery community. The fish were captured monthly in the Coast of Pernambuco State, Northeast Brazil, between October 2012 and September 2013. Eleven isopods were found and identified as Rocinela signata. This study defines rearing parameters for mass products of 30-day old post larvae. Continuous lighting (600 lux) optimizes the predatory activity and suppresses the feeding rhythm. For 4-5 mm larvae (15 days), food ingestion slows down if the prey concentration in the tank is below 5 rotifers/ml, while there is no such threshold for 6-7 mm larvae (22 days). The rotifer Brachionus plicatilis , between 100 and 200 mu m, is an adequate initial prey, it can be replaced by Artemia salina for 7-8 mm larvae (30 days). Underestimation of chemical contamination in marine fish muscle tissue can be reduced by considering variable wet:dry weight ratios ArchiMer

Whether considered as a risk for human health or as ecological tracers, contaminants' concentrations measured in fish muscles are commonly expressed relative to wet or dry mass. Comparison of results required conversion factors (CF) but accurate values are scarce and case-specific. The present paper is aimed at investigating errors linked with the use of the theoretical value. Muscles dry and wet masses were measured in 15 fish species to determine the actual CF. Pooled DNA extraction is the first and compulsory step to allow the identification of a large number of samples through high-throughput DNA sequencing with drastic time and cost reductions.

Maturation and spawning of tropical and subtropical marine finfish by environmental manipulations ArchiMer

Circannual, diel, and lunal periodic mechanisms in naturally reproducing stocks of tropical and subtropical fishes are reviewed. Manipulations of biological clocks, used to control reproduction in captive broodstocks, are detailed. Experiments to induce controlled maturation and spawning in fishes either test efficacy of changing environmental conditions (regimes), or constant environmental conditions (controlled). Data have been generated in experimental/scientific studies, as well as applied research. Effects of controlled environmental regimes on serum steroids, gametogenesis, spawning, fry performance and egg quality are summarized for selected members of Centropomidae, Serranidae, and Sciaenidae.

Sperm features in turbot (Scophthalmus maximus): a comparison with other freshwater and marine fish species ArchiMer

This paper presents some features of turbot sperm and compares them with data reported in the literature on other freshwater and marine fish. In captivity, turbot spermiation period lasts 6 months. When compared to other fish species, turbot males are characterized by low values of maximum gonadosomatic index (0.6-0.8%) and are poor sperm producers in terms of volume (0.2-2.2 ml), concentration (0.7-11.0 x 10(9) spermatozoa/ml) and total sperm number released per stripping (0.2-12.0 x 10(9) spermatozoa). Compared to most freshwater species, the duration of cell movement is long (1-17 min). The spermatozoon of turbot can be considered to be of a primitive type. Population structure of the common sole (Solea solea) in the Northeastern Atlantic and the Mediterranean Sea: revisiting the divide with EPIC markers ArchiMer

Spatial and temporal population genetic structures of the common sole, Solea solea, were studied in Northeastern Atlantic and Mediterranean Sea populations, using three polymorphic exon-primed intron-crossing (EPIC) markers. Results demonstrated significant multilocus differentiation among Eastern Mediterranean and a group composed by Western Mediterranean and Atlantic populations (theta = 0.150, P < 0.001), but also suggested unrecorded genetic differentiation of the Adriatic Sea population.
