Micronutrients, such as zinc, are important for the metabolic activities that can benefit germination and seed vigor because many soils are deficient in this micronutrient. The objective of this study was to evaluate the influence of coating oat seeds with zinc on the physiological quality and yield of the seeds produced. The experimental design was completely randomized, with a 2 x 5 factorial arrangement of the following, with four replications per treatment: factor A - product 1, 780 g L-1 zinc, and product 2, 17 and 600 g L-1 nitrogen and zinc, respectively; and factor B - 0, 1, 2, 3 and 4 mL of each product kg-1 seed. The results were subjected to an analysis of variance and a means comparison test (p ≤ 0.5 using Tukey’s test). The experimental plots... |

Brazil is one of the largest importers of olive (Olea europaea L.) products, being the fourth largest importer of olive oil and the fifth of olives. In recent decades the introduction and growing of olive cultivars less chilling requirement in the South and Southeast made viable the olives production in the country. On the other hand, there are still shortages of information about the management of this crop in our country, especially in relation to studies about the nutritional needs of the olive tree, grown in subtropical regions, and it may enable advances in productivity of this fruit. The aim of study was to evaluate the growth, dry matter production and nutritional status of the olive tree under the effect of the omission of nutrients as well as... |

Among micronutrients, zinc (Zn) is important for coffee tree cultivation, especially in the clayey acid soils of Brazil’s southeast region, where coffee production is an important activity. This study aimed to evaluate the Zn use efficiency of coffee tree varieties using two zinc concentrations. Seedlings of 11 varieties of coffee trees were grown in a greenhouse in nutrient solution containing either 0.0 or 6.0 µmol L-1 of Zn. After eight months, we evaluated the total biomass production, leaf biomass production, concentration of Zn in the plant organs, absorption efficiency, and Zn use efficiency. All characteristics were affected by the Zn concentration. The biomass production of apical leaves was most affected by the Zn treatments, with high... |

ABSTRACT This study aimed to evaluate the fertiliser sources and application methods of copper (Cu) in citrus trees during the first years of fruit production. Two experiments were set up in an orchard with 3-year-old sweet orange trees, which were applied with three sources of Cu (nitrate, sulfate or EDTA) either via fertigation (Experiment 1) or via foliar sprays (Experiment 2). Regardless of the fertiliser source, Cu application via fertigation was not efficacious to increase the micronutrient concentration in leaves and, consequently, did not affect fruit yield. Conversely, foliar application of Cu, either as nitrate or sulfate, increased this nutrient level in leaves but when applied as copper nitrate, visual phytotoxicity symptoms were verified in... |

The objective of this study was to re-evaluate some aspects of the relative importance of organic matter on Mn solubility in acid soil conditions. Field study showed that black oats, oil seed radish, elephant grass, lupin, leucaena, and coffee leaves serving as mulch decreased Mn solubility as compared with bare soil. The decrease in Mn solubility with plant mulch was related to increase in soil moisture content. Laboratory study showed that increasing temperature from 25 to 100ºC increased Mn solubility and total soil organic carbon was little changed; from 150 to 200ºC increased both Mn solubility and organic carbon oxidation, and up to 300ºC decreased Mn solubility and stoped organic carbon oxidation . Aluminum solubility always increased with... |

Pfaffia glomerata (Spreng.) Pedersen plantlets were grown under different cadmium (Cd) concentrations (0, 20, 40, 60 and 80 μM) in a hydroponic system during 7 d. Plant growth, micronutrient, chlorophyll and carotenoid concentrations, as well as δ-aminolevulinic acid dehydratase (ALA-D; E.C.4.2.1.24) and acid phosphatase (AP; E.C.3.1.3.2) activities were then analysed. Cadmium concentration in both shoots and roots increased with increasing external Cd levels. Metal concentration was on average 12-fold greater in root than in shoot tissues. Root length was unaffected by Cd treatments. In contrast, dry weight of both shoot and roots increased significantly upon addition of 20 and 40 μM Cd. Moreover, shoot and total plant dry weight was only reduced in... |

C. Meriño-Gergichevich, E. Pacheco, and M. Reyes-Díaz. 2016. The effect of foliar boron spraying on the fruit features of Brigitta and Legacy highbush blueberry (Vaccinium corymbosum) cultivars. Cien. Inv. Agr. 43(3):452-463. Boron (B) is associated with reproductive and antioxidant metabolism in plants, and in southern Chile, the deficiency of this micronutrient is ameliorated through foliar applications that are a part of agricultural management, thus ensuring the productivity of crops including highbush blueberry (Vaccinium corymbosum L.). However, the appropriate B dosage for this species is unknown, so the aim of this study was to evaluate foliar B application on fruit quality in highbush blueberry in southern Chile. During the 2014-2015 season,... |

Abstract Zinc deficiency affects one third of the population and a possible solution is the agronomic biofortification of vegetables. Due to the increased consumption of arugula, this vegetable has good potential of use; however, there are few researches on the subject. The objective of this study was to evaluate the effect of foliar zinc applications, at different times, on physiological, yield, nutritional, and biofortification parameters of the ‘Broad Leaf’ arugula. Three doses (0.5, 1, and 1.5 kg ha-1 Zn) were evaluated at five times (15; 20; 25; 15 and 20; and 15, 20 and 25 days after emergence) and a control treatment. It was observed that there was no effect of the application on the physiological variables, as well as on the height, leaf area, and... |

A slight increase in the levels of a certain nutrient can cause a significant increase in crop yield or can cause phytotoxicity symptoms. Thus, the aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of foliar application of copper (Cu) on the growth and yield of DG-501 maize. The experiment was carried out between December 2009 and April 2010 in conventional tillage. When plants were with six to eight leaves, Cu (0, 100, 200, 300, 400, 500 and 600g ha-1) was applied to the leaves. Treatments were arranged in randomized complete block with five replications. When 50% of the plants were in flowering, it was evaluated the plant height, culm diameter, height of the first ear insertion, leaf area, and chlorophyll content. At harvest, it was evaluated diameter and... |
