Population and development in the Amazon: A longitudinal study of migrant settlers in the Northern Ecuadorian Amazon Acta Amazonica
SELLERS,Samuel; BILSBORROW,Richard; SALINAS,Victoria; MENA,Carlos.
ABSTRACT This paper examines changes over time for a full generation of migrant settlers in the Northern Ecuadorian Amazon (NEA). Data were collected from a 2014 household survey covering a subsample of households surveyed previously in 1990 and 1999. We observed changes in demographic behavior, land use, forest cover, and living conditions. As the frontier develops, human fertility is continuing to decline with contraceptive prevalence rising. Meanwhile, out-migration from colonist households, largely to destinations within the region, persists. More households have secure land tenure than in 1999, and are better off as measured by possession of assets. There is continued growth in pasture, largely at the expense of forest. Farms still serve as an...

Changes in population and land use over time in the Ecuadorian Amazon Acta Amazonica
Bilsborrow,Richard E.; Barbieri,Alisson F.; Pan,William.
This paper draws upon a detailed longitudinal survey of households living on agricultural plots in the northern three provinces of the Ecuadorian Amazon, the principal region of colonization by migrants in Ecuador since the 1970s. Following the discovery of petroleum in 1967 near what has subsequently come to be the provincial capital and largest Amazonian city of Lago Agrio, oil companies built roads to lay pipelines to extract and pump oil across the Andes for export. As a result, for the past 30 years over half of both Ecuador's export earnings and government revenues have come from petroleum extracted from this region. But the roads also facilitated massive spontaneous in-migration of families from origin areas in the Ecuadorian Sierra, characterized...

Entry, dispersion and differentiation of microglia in the developing central nervous system Anais da ABC (AABC)
NAVASCUÉS,JULIO; CALVENTE,RUTH; MARÍN-TEVA,JOSÉ L.; CUADROS,MIGUEL A..
Microglial cells within the developing central nervous system (CNS) originate from mesodermic precursors of hematopoietic lineage that enter the nervous parenchyma from the meninges, ventricular space and/or blood stream. Once in the nervous parenchyma, microglial cells increase in number and disperse throughout the CNS; these cells finally differentiate to become fully ramified microglial cells. In this article we review present knowledge on these phases of microglial development and the factors that probably influence them.

The altered expression of the SOX2 transcription factor is associated with oncogenic or tumor suppressor functions in human cancers. This factor regulates the migration and invasion of different cancer cells. In this study we investigated the effect of constitutive SOX2 overexpression on the migration and adhesion capacity of embryonal teratocarcinoma NT2/D1 cells derived from a metastasis of a human testicular germ cell tumor. We detected that increased SOX2 expression changed the speed, mode and path of cell migration, but not the adhesion ability of NT2/D1 cells. Additionally, we demonstrated that SOX2 overexpression increased the expression of the tumor suppressor protein p53 and the HDM2 oncogene. Our results contribute to the better understanding of...

Mangroves Response to Climate Change: A Review of Recent Findings on Mangrove Extension and Distribution Anais da ABC (AABC)
Godoy,Mario D.P.; Lacerda,Luiz D. de.
Mangroves function as a natural coastline protection for erosion and inundation, providing important environmental services. Due to their geographical distribution at the continent-ocean interface, the mangrove habitat may suffer heavy impacts from global climate change, maximized by local human activities occurring in a given coastal region. This review analyzed the literature published over the last 25 years, on the documented response of mangroves to environmental change caused by global climate change, taking into consideration 104 case studies and predictive modeling, worldwide. Most studies appeared after the year 2000, as a response to the 1997 IPCC report. Although many reports showed that the world's mangrove area is decreasing due to direct...

Regional movements of the tiger shark, Galeocerdo cuvier, off northeastern Brazil: inferences regarding shark attack hazard Anais da ABC (AABC)
HAZIN,FÁBIO H.V.; AFONSO,ANDRÉ S.; CASTILHO,PEDRO C. DE; FERREIRA,LUCIANA C.; ROCHA,BRUNO C.L.M..
An abnormally high shark attack rate verified off Recife could be related to migratory behavior of tiger sharks. This situation started after the construction of the Suape port to the south of Recife. A previous study suggested that attacking sharks could be following northward currents and that they were being attracted shoreward by approaching vessels. In this scenario, such northward movement pattern could imply a higher probability of sharks accessing the littoral area of Recife after leaving Suape. Pop-up satellite archival tags were deployed on five tiger sharks caught off Recife to assess their movement patterns off northeastern Brazil. All tags transmitted from northward latitudes after 7-74 days of freedom. The shorter, soak distance between...

Food availability and larval density affect ovarian development in Plutella xylostella (L.) (Lepidoptera: Yponomeutidae) Anais da SEB
Castelo Branco,Marina; Gatehouse,Alexander G..
The effect of Diamondback Moth (Plutella xylostella L.) population density and plant age on the rate of ovarian development was investigated. In tests carried out in Petri dishes, the density of larvae/leaf disk affected the rate of ovarian development. A high proportion of moths from larvae reared on leak disks from two or four-month-old spring cabbage at a density of seven or 14 larvae/leaf disk were mature at emergence. But moths reared at the same type of plant at a density of 28 larvae/leaf disk were largely immature at emergence. When the larvae were reared at a density of 30 larvae/plant on two or four-month-old spring cabbage plants, a high proportion of females were mature at emergence. Crowding has an important effect on the rate of ovarian...

TNFa increases in vitro migration of human HPV18-positive SW756 cervical carcinoma cells Biocell
Hidalgo,K.; Rojas,I. G.; Penissi,A. B.; Rudolph,M. I..
TNFa has been associated with both, tumor survival and apoptosis. This cytokine is also involved in promoting cell migration during wound healing and tumorigenesis. SW756 is a HPV18-positive cervical carcinoma cell line, which has been used to study different mechanisms of cervical cancer progression. An in vitro assay of scratch wound healing onto monolayers of SW756 cells was used to assess the effect of TNFa on cell migration into a wound space. It was found that SW756 cells have the ability to migrate, but not proliferate in response to scratch wounding in a serum-free medium supplemented with TNFa. RT-PCR analysis showed that SW756 cells express TNFa mRNA when incubated in medium with and without serum. Wound closure and migration rate of SW756 cells...

Galectin-8 promotes migration and proliferation and prevents apoptosis in U87 glioblastoma cells Biol. Res.
Metz,Claudia; Döger,Remziye; Riquelme,Elizabeth; Cortés,Priscilla; Holmes,Christopher; Shaughnessy,Ronan; Oyanadel,Claudia; Grabowski,Catalina; González,Alfonso; Soza,Andrea.
BACKGROUND: Glioblastoma is one of the most aggressive cancers of the brain. Malignant traits of glioblastoma cells include elevated migration, proliferation and survival capabilities. Galectins are unconventionally secreted glycan-binding proteins that modulate processes of cell adhesion, migration, proliferation and apoptosis by interacting with beta-galactosides of cell surface glycoproteins and the extracellular matrix. Galectin-8 is one of the galectins highly expressed in glioblastoma cells. It has a unique selectivity for terminally sialylated glycans recently found enhanced in these highly malignant cells. A previous study in glioblastoma cell lines reported that Gal-8 coating a plastic surface stimulates two-dimensional motility. Because in other...

A spleen tyrosine kinase inhibitor attenuates the proliferation and migration of vascular smooth muscle cells Biol. Res.
Seo,Hyang‑Hee; Kim,Sang Woo; Lee,Chang Youn; Lim,Kyu Hee; Lee,Jiyun; Choi,Eunhyun; Lim,Soyeon; Lee,Seahyoung; Hwang,Ki‑Chul.
Abstract Background Pathologic vascular smooth muscle cell (VSMC) proliferation and migration after vascular injury promotes the development of occlusive vascular disease. Therefore, an effective chemical agent to suppress aberrant proliferation and migration of VSMCs can be a potential therapeutic modality for occlusive vascular disease such as atherosclerosis and restenosis. To find an anti-proliferative chemical agent for VSMCs, we screened an in-house small molecule library, and the selected small molecule was further validated for its anti-proliferative effect on VSMCs using multiple approaches, such as cell proliferation assays, wound healing assays, transwell migration assays, and ex vivo aortic ring assay. Results Among 43 initially screened...

Knockdown of ubiquitin-specific peptidase 39 inhibited the growth of osteosarcoma cells and induced apoptosis in vitro Biol. Res.
Gan,Zhihua; Han,Kun; Lin,Shuchen; Hu,Haiyan; Shen,Zan; Min,Daliu.
Abstract Background Ubiquitin specific peptidase 39 (USP39), an essential factor in the assembly of the mature spliceosome complex, has an aberrant expression in several cancer. However, its function and the corresponding mechanism on human osteosarcoma has not been fully explored yet. Methods The mRNA and DNA copies of USP39 were increased in osteosarcoma cancer tissues compared with the one in human normal tissues according to datasets from the publicly available Oncomine database. A further western blot analysis also demonstrated an aberrant endogenous expression of USP39 in three different osteosarcoma cells. Then lentivirus-mediated short hairpin RNA (shRNA) was designed to silence USP39 in human osteosarcoma cell line U2OS, which is used to test...

The birds at Ilha Comprida beach (São Paulo State, Brazil): a multivariate approach Biota Neotropica
Barbieri,Edison; Paes,Eduardo Tavares.
Birds were censused weekly from January 1999 to January 2001 along Ilha Comprida beach, a barrier island off São Paulo, southeastern Brazil. To evaluate the similarity in the bird's species composition among the weekly surveys, species counts data were arranged on a data matrix with 144 weekly surveys, analyzed following a multivariate analysis protocol. We counted a total of 205,399 individuals and 52 species. Migratory birds were an important component of the avifauna (maximum N = 21,294 individuals and 14 species). The largest numbers of birds were observed during summer, when Nearctic migrants arrive. All 14 of the most common species were migrants, including Calidris alba, Sterna maxima, Charadrius semipalmatus, Sterna hirundo, Thalasseus maximus,...

Occurrence of Stercorarius pomarinus (Temminck, 1815, Charadriiformes: Stercorariidae) in the Cananéia estuary, southern coast of São Paulo State Biota Neotropica
Barbieri,Edison; Bete,Douglas.
Many Neartic seabirds migrate to South America for the non-breeding season, using several key stopover and wintering sites along the Atlantic coast. The Stercorarius pomarinus is a widely distributed seabird found in every Ocean. It is a migratory bird from northern North America that flies southwards. However, there is little information about the occurrence of Stercorarius pomarinus along the São Paulo State coast. Former publications concerning the birds of Iguape- Cananéia- Ilha Comprida estuary have made no mention of the presence of this bird in the region. Thus it is important that forthcoming appearances be recorded. Throughout the bird-sample selection stage, undertaken since 1998 in the Cananéia estuary (25° 02' 44.71" S and 47° 55' 14.58" W) -...

Upstream guppies (Poecilia reticulata, Peters, 1859) go against the flow Biota Neotropica
Mohammed,Ryan Simon; van Oosterhout,Cock; Schelkle,Bettina; Cable,Joanne; McMullan,Mark.
Guppies (Poecilia reticulata Peters 1859) in lakes and from captive-bred populations are predicted to show little rheotaxis compared to conspecifics in a stream environment that are regularly exposed to flash floods associated with involuntary downstream migration. Here we test this hypothesis using an artificial stream, examining guppies of two wild riverine populations, one lake population, and one ornamental strain. Guppies from the most upstream riverine habitat show the most pronounced rheotaxis and are less likely to be swept downstream during flooding events. However, there is no significant difference between guppies from the lowland riverine habitat, the Pitch Lake and ornamental strain. We propose that station-keeping behaviours are most strongly...

Four seasons abundance changes of Zalophus californianus californianus (Lesson 1828), Allen, 1880, in the Gulf of California, Mexico BABT
Maravilla-Chávez,M. Octavio; Zavala-González,Alfredo; Ortega-Rubio,Alfredo.
This paper describes for the first time the relative abundance, population structure and numeric variation of California sea lions in the Gulf of California, Mexico, during four different seasons. The relative abundance estimates varied from the highest 17,162 sea lions in July of 1990 (summer) to a minimum 7,470 in February of 1992 (winter), representing a reduction of 10,000 sea lions. Hypotheses about the migration of part of the population to the Pacific Ocean were compared and discussed against their residency inside the Gulf, and seasonal dispersion of individuals along this inner sea.

Role of previous stimulation on the neutrophil migration protects against the lethal effect of Salmonella typhimurium Braz. J. Vet. Res. Anim. Sci.
MORAES,Flávio Ruas de; KLEIN Jr.,Manoel Henrique; MORAES,Julieta Rodini Engrácia de.
The intraperitoneal inoculation of 3.8 x 10(9) CFU of alive Salmonella typhimurium caused 100% mortality in rats. In these animals a small number of neutrophils migrated to the peritoneal cavity. The intraperitoneal inoculation of the animals with thioglycollate (Tg, 90 mg), carrageenin (Cg, 500 mu g), or killed S. typhimurium (KS, 1.9 x 10(9) CFU) 24 hours before challenge with alive S. typhimurium caused a significant neutrophil migration to the peritoneal cavity (determined 6 hours after challenge) and protected the animals against the lethal effect of the bacteria at a rate of 50%, 83% and 80%, respectively. However, similar treatment of the animals with brain heart infusion broth (BHI, S. typhimurium grout medium) protected the animals by only 23%....
