Anchovies of the Sea of Azov and The Black Sea: Regularities of wintering migrations (Brief review) IBSS Repository
Shulman, G. E..
Close relation between internal (level of fat stores) and external (temperature fall) impulses of wintering migration of Azov and Black Sea anchovies Engraulis encrasicolus maeoticus and E. e. ponticus (“dosage principle”) was revealed. Schools with high fatness begin migration at more high temperature than that ones with low fatness. Intensity of migration also correlates with level of fatness. Regularities obtained may be used for study of wintering migration of other truly marine fishes.

ArchiMer
Le Foll, Anne.
The study of the crab Cancer pagurus , along the Brittany coast, has revealed new information about its movements, growth and reproduction. The 1439 crab tagging has been effected either on land using the Edwards technique "suture-tag" or onboard using a similar technique to the Gundersen method of "toggle-tag". The results confirm that males are relatively sedentary, the females migrate more. To estimate growth, the author used the "capture-recapture" method and the results from crab rearing. It appeared that the molt increment is not constant and generally, so the molt frequency, it percentage decreases when the size increases.

Bennet, D; Casey, J; Dare, P; Dawson, W; Flatman, S; Hulme, T; Macer, C; Millner, R; Pickett, G; Vince, M; Lorance, Pascal; Souplet, A; Giret, M; Morin, Jocelyne; Berthou, A; Latrouite, Daniel; Morizur, Yvon; Bossy, S; Ozanne, S.
At present, the majority of fisheries are monitored and regulated in areas which are delineated by arbitrary ICES boundaries which do not necessarily have logical or consistent relationships with biological processes or fish movements. The biogeographical identification of Channel stocks is, therefore, an important step towards developing a rational strategy for the management of their fisheries. This synthesis is based on the wide available knowledge which has not been yet entirely exploited with the purpose of stock identification, for 25 commercially important species in the Channel. In addition, principal technics for stock identification are reviewed likewise environmental characteristics of the Channel, which represent fundamental components in...

Do FADs influence the geographical distribution of dolphinfish (Coryphaena hippurus)? ArchiMer
Taquet, Marc; Reynal, Lionel; Laurans, Martial.
For most fisheries, increasing the local production of pelagic fish is the main objective of Fish Aggregating Devices (fads). This does not rule out the existence of a larger-scale impact, especially on the migratory behaviour of fish. The analysis of data collected during 25 experimental fishing surveys around Martinique between 1995 and 1997 has led to the hypothesis that fads influence the migratory behaviour of young dolphinfish. Unlike recent studies of dolphinfish migration in the Caribbean, which tend to show an annual migration pattern with a seasonal passage through the French West Indies, the experimental fishing surveys done over more than a year on a monthly basis on a single cohort, show that the migratory pattern of part of the regional stock...

ArchiMer
Aloncle, Henri; Delaporte, Francis.
In this, the 2nd part of a study of Thunnus alalunga in the north-east Atlantic, populations and migrations are considered. The term 'population' is defined. The utilization of H. fusca as a biological 'marker' is considered and tagging experiments are described. Modal classes are examined: summary analysis, detailed analysis of fisheries. Internal temps and regulation are studied. The types of watering are defined and described and a statistical analysis as a function of the watering is made. An attempt at synthesis is made: Azorian, standard. Migratory determinism is examined.

Grellier, Patrick.
Vertebrate Cyclostome, the european sea lamprey is a sea spawning migrator amphihaline species, which is a parasite during its growing phase at sea. After the spawning migration, lampreys couple in the upper reach of water courses, they lay their eggs, then die from physiological misery. The eggs develop sheltered into a nest until hatching of small larvae, the ammocoetes. Morphologically very different from the adults, the ammocoetes spend a several years sedentary life, being burried into the sediment. Then, they metamorphose into young lampreys which undertake their downstream migration. As soon as they enter sea water, they continue growing at the expense of several species of fishes.

Role of steroid hormones and external factors in the control of pituitary gonadotropic activity of female European eel (Anguilla anguilla ). ArchiMer
Leloup, H; Fontaine, Y; Dufour, S; Querat, B.
Gonadotropic activity is relatively low in the female freshwater (FW) eel (A. anguilla ): pituitary GTH was about 15 ng equivalent cGTH/mg fresh tissue. Plasma GTH was always less than 1 ng equivalent cGTH/ml and often undetectable (< 0.2 ng equivalent cGTH/ml). Ovarian steroidogenesis in FW fish is similarly low; plasma concentration of both free testosterone (T) and free estradiol (E sub(2)) were less than 0.3 ng/ml as measured by RIA. Treatment with E sub(2) in FW fish caused a great increase in pituitary GTH, up to 1000 times control values, without changing plasma GTH. Stimulation of gonadotropic activity and ovarian development occur during the eel's migration to the Sargasso Sea. Adaptation to seawater (SW) caused a great increase of plasma E...

Tagging Atlantic bluefin tuna from a Mediterranean spawning ground using a purse seiner ArchiMer
Rouyer, Tristan; Bonhommeau, Sylvain; Giordano, Nicolas; Giordano, François; Ellul, Saviour; Ellul, Giovanni; Deguara, Simeon; Wendling, Bertrand; Bernard, Serge; Kerzerho, Vincent.
Atlantic bluefin tuna, Thunnus thynnus, is as an emblematic and commercially valuable large pelagic species. In the past ten years, the purse seine fishery in the Mediterranean represents more than 50 % of the catch. Nowadays, purse seines target large fish and operate during the spawning season in the spawning grounds. Electronic tagging has shed a considerable amount of light on the ecology and behaviour of bluefin tuna over the past twenty years. However, such technique has rarely been applied on large bluefin tunas caught by the Mediterranean purse seine fishery despite its major importance. The logistical constraints related to this specific fishery, combined with the timing of migration of the fish and the requirements related to the handling of big...

Phytotherapies in motion: French Guiana as a case study for cross-cultural ethnobotanical hybridization ArchiMer
Tareau, M.-a.; Bonnefond, A.; Palisse, M.; Odonne, G..
Background French Guiana is characterized by a very multicultural population, made up of formerly settled groups (Amerindians, Maroons, Creoles) and more recent migrants (mostly from Latin America and the Caribbean). It is the ideal place to try to understand the influence of intercultural exchanges on the composition of medicinal floras and the evolution of phytotherapies under the effect of cross-culturalism. Methods A combination of qualitative and quantitative methods was used. Semi-directive interviews were conducted in 12 localities of French Guiana’s coast between January 2016 and June 2017, and the responses to all closed questions collected during the survey were computerized in an Excel spreadsheet to facilitate quantitative processing. Institutions, mobility and resilience in the Fante migratory fisheries of West Africa OceanDocs
Overå, R..
Through their spatial mobility, African fishermen and fish traders explore and exploit new niches: primarily fishing grounds and fish markets (see Chauveau 1991). Ghanaian canoe fishermen are among the groups most famous for such activity. In the twentieth century, they migrated extensively in coastal West Africa, reaching as far as Mauritania to the north and Congo to the south in order to fish in areas where the local fishermen have under-exploited their fishing grounds, and markets are unsaturated with fish (Delauney 1991; Boujou 2000). These migrants’ contributions in their host countries in terms of technological innovation in the fisheries, in terms of new knowledge and institutions, and not the least in terms of food supply, are increasingly being...

Dia, A.D..

Some observations on the African catfish Clarias gariepinus (Burchell) in the Sondu-Miriu River of Lake Victoria, Kenya OceanDocs
Lung'ayia, H.B.O..
The African catfish Clarias gariepinus (Burchell), has an intermitent occurrence in the Sondu-Miriu river draining into lake Victoria. Observations were made to get basic information on size composition, migration, spawning period and food of this species in the river. A total of 376 fish samples of fish ranging from 11.9 to 101.1 cm in total length were examined from January to December 1989. A migration of the fish between the lake and the river waters is indicated. Small sized and immature fish were available in the river throughout the year but their numbers became minimal in the dry season. Large and mature specimens were caught mainly during the high water mark and rainy seasons of April-June and...
