Protected fat and variable level of protein in diets of crossbreed cows in early lactation Animal Sciences
Souza Júnior, Alcy Heleno de; Lana, Rogério de Paula; Teixeira, César Roberto Viana; Gionbelli, Mateus Pies; Veloso, Cristina Mattos; Rennó, Luciana Navajas.
Current study evaluated the inclusion of protected fat and different levels of crude protein (CP) in the diet of crossbreed cows in early lactation. Twelve cows were distributed in a 4 x 4 factorial design, with four treatments (12 or 16% CP, with or without MEGALAC-E®). Statistical analyzes with ANOVA and Pearson’s linear correlation procedures were performed. Protected fat did not affect intake of dry matter (DM) and organic matter (OM) (p > 0.05). Increased CP raised consumption of CP and EE and decreased the non-fiber carbohydrates (NFC; p <0.05). Protected fat increased (p <0.05) the digestibility of DM, OM, CP and ashes in the lower protein content. CP increase raised the level of blood and urinary urea (p < 0.05). There was no difference...

Hassan, Laila Khaled; Shazly, Ahmed Behdal; Kholif, Abd El-Kader Mahmoud; Sayed, Ahmed Farouk; El-Aziz, Mahmoud Abd.
Produce and compare soft cheese with potential benefits of human health from Egyptian buffalo's and cow's milk was studied. Eight Egyptian lactating buffalos and cows were fed a total mixed ration supplemented with either 0% oil (CD), 2% flaxseed oil (DFO), 2% soybean oil (DSO), or 2% of their mixture (1:1, DFSO) according to a double 4 x 4 Latin Square design. Milk yield was similar between buffalo's diets but was higher in cows fed a DFO, DSO or DFSO resulting in 11.15, 8.21% or 8.97% increases compared with the control diet, respectively. Milk composition was not significantly affected in both buffalos and cows fed diets. The DFO, DSO or DFSO displayed decreased short-chain fatty acids, especially DSO and DFSO (3.73 and 3.33%, respectively) when...

Milking Machines on Chilean Dairy Farms and their Effects on Somatic Cell Count and Milk Yield: A Fied Study Agricultura Técnica
Garcés A,R; López F,J; Bruckmaier,R. M.
Thirty-four dairy farms in the south central zone of Chile were evaluated in order to describe the functioning of the milking machines with respect to vacuum, pulsators, milklines and cluster characteristics and their relationship with somatic cell count (SCC) and milk yield (MY). An inadequate nominal vacuum level (NVL) was one factor that influenced negatively SCC. The increase of SCC was more accentuated in those milking machines with high-lines than mid- and low-lines. MY was also negatively influenced by an inadequate high NVL. Higher MY value was found in those farms which had < 44 kPa NVL. In all cases, effective vacuum reserve deficit (EVRD) produced SCC above international recommendations. The EVRD effect was not significant (P > 0.05) on...

Ferreira,Abílio G.T.; Henrique,Douglas S.; Vieira,Ricardo A.M.; Maeda,Emilyn M.; Valotto,Altair A..
The objective of this study was to evaluate four mathematical models with regards to their fit to lactation curves of Holstein cows from herds raised in the southwestern region of the state of Parana, Brazil. Initially, 42,281 milk production records from 2005 to 2011 were obtained from "Associação Paranaense de Criadores de Bovinos da Raça Holandesa (APCBRH)". Data lacking dates of drying and total milk production at 305 days of lactation were excluded, resulting in a remaining 15,142 records corresponding to 2,441 Holstein cows. Data were sorted according to the parity order (ranging from one to six), and within each parity order the animals were divided into quartiles (Q25%, Q50%, Q75% and Q100%) corresponding to 305-day lactation yield. Within each...

Tonhati,H.; Muñoz,M.F.C.; Duarte,J.M.C.; Reichert,R.H.; Oliveira,J.A.; Lima,A.L.F..
Correction factors for milk yield at 90, 240, 270 and 305 days of lactation of buffaloes and genetic and environmental parameters for milk yield of these lactation periods were estimated. The data used consisted of 3888 lactation records of 1630 buffaloes from 10 herds reared in the State of São Paulo. Genetic parameters were estimated by the derivative free restricted maximum likelihood method, fitting an animal repeatability model. Heritability estimates for milk yield corrected for 90, 240, 270 and 305 days of lactation were 0.17, 0.15, 0.14 and 0.14, respectively. In this same order, repeatability estimates were 0.40, 0.44, 0.41 and 0.41. The genetic correlation estimates between these corrected milk yields ranged from 0.96 to 1.00. The multiplicative...

Variation of cow’s milk composition across different daily milking sessions and feasibility of using a composite sampling Ciência Rural
Bondan,Carlos; Folchini,Jéssica Aneris; Noro,Mirela; Machado,Karine Martini; Muhls,Eduardo; González,Félix Hilário Diaz.
ABSTRACT: This study vised to detect possible changes in chemical and cellular composition of cow’s milk at different milking sessions and to test if proportional or composite milk sampling can be used instead of separate milk analysis. Two experiments were conducted: one in cows milked thrice daily and the other one in cows milked twice daily. In both experiments, three milk samples were collected from each cow in each milking session in order to determine milk composition at each milking; to have a composite sample, i.e., a single sample from the same aliquots of milk from each milking session; and to have a proportional sample, i.e., a single sample from each milking session in a volume proportional to milk volume yielded. Fat content and fat to...

Supplementation of dairy cows with propylene glycol during the periparturient period: effects on body condition score, milk yield, first estrus post-partum, beta-hydroxybutyrate, non-esterified fatty acids and glucose concentrations Ciência Rural
Fonseca,Luís Fernando Laranja da; Rodrigues,Paulo Henrique Mazza; Santos,Marcos Veiga dos; Lima,André Pinto; Lucci,Carlos de Sousa.
The objective of this study was to analyse the effects of propylene glycol (PPG) supplementation to periparturient cows on: milk yield, changes in body condition score (BCS), days to first oestrus after calving, and on the beta-hydroxybutyrate (BHBA), non-esterefied fatty acids (NEFA) and glucose concentrations. Twenty-three Holstein cows were distributed into two treatments: a) 300 mL of PPG (group treatment, 11 cows), b) 300 mL of water (group control, 12 cows), administered via drench in periparturient period. BCS was evaluated on days -10, 0, 15, 30, 45 and 60 relative to calving date. There was no effect of treatment or time on milk yield, although the interaction of time*treatment was significant and during the 4th and 5th week of lactation, milk...

Variance component estimates applying random regression models for test-day milk yield in Caracu heifers (Bos taurus Artiodactyla, Bovidae) Genet. Mol. Biol.
El Faro,Lenira; Cardoso,Vera Lucia; Albuquerque,Lucia Galvão de.
Random regression models (RRM) were used to estimate covariance functions for 2,155 first-lactation milk yields of native Brazilian Caracu heifers. The models included contemporary group (defined as year-month of test and paddock) fixed effects, and quadratic effect of age of cow at calving. Genetic and permanent environmental effects were fitted by a random regression model and Legendre polynomials of days in milk (DIM). Schwarz's Bayesian information criteria (BIC) indicated that the best RRM assumed a six coefficient function for both random effects and a sixth order variance function for residual structure. Akaike's information criteria suggested a model with the same number of coefficients for both effects and a residual structure fitted by a step...

Association of IGF-I gene polymorphisms with milk yield and body size in Chinese dairy goats Genet. Mol. Biol.
Deng,Chanjuan; Ma,Rongnuan; Yue,Xiangpeng; Lan,Xianyong; Chen,Hong; Lei,Chuzhao.
The association of IGF-I gene polymorphisms with certain traits in 708 individuals of two Chinese dairy-goat breeds (Guanzhong and Xinong Saanen) was investigated. Polymerase chain reaction-single strand conformation polymorphism (PCR-SSCP) and DNA sequencing methods were employed in screening for genetic variation. Two novel mutations were detected in the 5'-flanking region and in intron 4 of IGF-I gene, viz., g.1617 G > A and g.5752 G > C (accession D26119.2), respectively. The associations of the g.1617 G > A mutation with milk yield and the body size were not significant (p > 0.05). However, in the case of g.5752 G > C, Xinong Saanen dairy goats with the CG genotype presented longer bodies (p < 0.05). Chest circumference (p < 0.05)...

Cubic-spline interpolation to estimate effects of inbreeding on milk yield in first lactation Holstein cows Genet. Mol. Biol.
Geha,Makram J.; Keown,Jeffrey F.; Van Vleck,L. Dale.
Milk yield records (305d, 2X, actual milk yield) of 123,639 registered first lactation Holstein cows were used to compare linear regression (y = β0 + β1X + e) ,quadratic regression, (y = β0 + β1X + β2X2 + e) cubic regression (y = β0 + β1X + β2X2 + β3X3 + e) and fixed factor models, with cubic-spline interpolation models, for estimating the effects of inbreeding on milk yield. Ten animal models, all with herd-year-season of calving as fixed effect, were compared using the Akaike corrected-Information Criterion (AICc). The cubic-spline interpolation model with seven knots had the lowest AICc, whereas for all those labeled as "traditional", AICc was higher than the best model. Results from fitting inbreeding using a cubic-spline with seven knots were compared...

Impact of the factors of animal production and welfare on robotic milking frequency PAB
Córdova,Helder de Arruda; Alessio,Dileta Regina Moro; Cardozo,Leonardo Leite; Thaler Neto,André.
Abstract: The objective of this work was to evaluate the impact of production factors on milking frequency and the latter’s effect on animal welfare in robotic milking. The experiment was performed with Holstein Friesian cows housed in free-stall barns. To assess the impact of production factors, body condition score, milk yield, and concentrate intake were determined. To determine the effects of the milking frequency on welfare, the locomotion and teat-end scores and serum cortisol level were evaluated. Three experimental groups were formed according to the daily average milking frequency: 1.0 to 1.9, 2.1 to 2.9, and above 3.0 milkings per day. The decrease in milking frequency during lactation was related to the reduction in concentrate intake and milk...

Szarvasmarhafajták tejtermelésének gazdasági értékelése AgEcon
Buzas, Gyula; Szabo, Ferenc.

Alternative sources of protein for lactating cows were evaluated in this study with respect to intake, digestibility, milk yield and milk composition. Eight multiparous Holstein/Gyr cows were simultaneously distributed in two 4 × 4 latin squares. Each experimental period lasted 21 days (14 days for adaptation and seven days to collect data and samples). Three protein sources, cottonseed meal, semi-integral soybean meal and corn steep liquor were evaluated and soybean meal was used as a control. When the corn steep liquor was used, lower intakes of dry matter, organic matter, crude protein and total digestible nutrients were observed compared with soybean meal. Animals that consumed corn steep liquor had a lower milk yield than those fed soybean meal, and...
