The role of knowledge and power in climate change adaptation governance: a systematic literature review Ecology and Society
Vink, Martinus J.; Public Administration and Policy Group, Wageningen University; martinus.vink@wur.nl; Dewulf, Art; Public Administration and Policy Group, Wageningen University; art.dewulf@wur.nl; Termeer, Catrien; Public Administration and Policy Group, Wageningen University; katrien.termeer@wur.nl.
The long-term character of climate change and the high costs of adaptation measures, in combination with their uncertain effects, turn climate adaptation governance into a torturous process. We systematically review the literature on climate adaptation governance to analyze the scholarly understanding of these complexities. Building on governance literature about long-term and complex policy problems, we develop a conceptual matrix based on the dimensions knowledge and power to systematically study the peer-reviewed literature on climate adaptation governance. We find that about a quarter of the reviewed journal articles do not address the knowledge or power dimension of the governance of climate change adaptation, about half of the articles discuss either...

Grasshopper Population Ecology: Catastrophe, Criticality, and Critique Ecology and Society
Lockwood, Dale R; Colorado State University; dale.lockwood@colostate.edu; Lockwood, Jeffrey A; University of Wyoming;.
Grasshopper population dynamics are an important part of the North American rangeland ecosystem and an important factor in the economies that derive from the rangeland. Outbreak dynamics have plagued management strategies in the rangeland, and attempts to find simple, linear and mechanistic solutions to both understanding and predicting the dynamics have proved fruitless. These efforts to ground theory in a correspondence with the “real” world, including whether the population dynamics are ultimately density dependent or density independent, have generated abundant heat but little light. We suggest that a pragmatic approach, in which theories are taken to be “tools” rather than competing claims of truth, has greater...

An Immune System Perspective on Ecosystem Management Ecology and Society
Janssen, Marco A; Indiana University; maajanss@indiana.edu.
A new perspective for studying the complex interactions between human activities and ecosystems is proposed. It is argued that biological immune systems share a number of similarities with ecological economic systems in terms of function. These similarities include the system's ability to recognize harmful invasions, design measures to control and destroy these invasions, and remember successful response strategies. Studying both the similarities and the differences between immune systems and ecological economic systems can provide new insights on ecosystem management.

Adaptive Ecosystem Management in the Pacific Northwest: a Case Study from Coastal Oregon Ecology and Society
Gray, Andrew N; U.S. Forest Service Pacific Northwest Research Station; agray01@fs.fed.us.
Adaptive ecosystem management has been adopted as a goal for decision making by several of the land management and regulatory agencies of the U.S. government. One of the first attempts to implement ecosystem management was undertaken on the federally managed forests of the Pacific Northwest in 1994. In addition to a network of reserve areas intended to restore habitat for late-successional terrestrial and aquatic species, "adaptive management areas" (AMAs) were established. These AMAs were intended to be focal areas for implementing innovative methods of ecological conservation and restoration and meeting economic and social goals. This paper analyzes the primary ecological, social, and institutional issues of concern to one AMA in the Coast Range in...

AN INDEX TO EVALUATE THE ACCEPTANCE OF SPECIALTY COFFEES IN CONSUMER GROUPS REA
Resende,Mariana; Cirillo,Marcelo Â.; Borém,Flávio M..
ABSTRACT Numerous factors are related to the individual sensory perception of consumers, which makes it impossible to adapt a model that explains their behavior. In this context and given the scarcity of statistical indexes that evaluate preferences for specialty coffees, new statistical methods should be studied. To this end, our study aimed to create an index that measures the acceptance of specialty coffees. The index was built considering the fit of regression models as a function of principal component scores. Validation was done by significance tests, whose probabilities were obtained by bootstrapping, considering the main measures used in diagnosing outliers as weights, with application to real data from different consumer groups. The coffee...

Relative contribution of effects included in contemporary groups for adjusted and actual 120-day and 210-day weights in Nelore cattle in Brazil Genet. Mol. Biol.
Pascoa,Lillian; Reyes,Arcadio de los; Elzo,Mauricio A.; Ferreira,Jorge L.; Bezerra,Luiz A.F.; Lôbo,Raysildo B..
The objective of this research was to estimate the relative magnitude of effects included in contemporary groups (CG) and their interactions with adjusted and actual 120 d and 210 d weights in 72, 731 male and female Nelore calves born from 1985 to 2005 in 40 herds from PMGRN (Genetic Improvement Program of Nelore). Ten models with different CG structures were compared. The analyses were done using the general linear models (GLM) procedure run in SAS software. All of the effects included in the CG for each model were significant (p < 0.001) for the four traits analyzed. Inclusion of semester or trimester of birth as part of a CG was more appropriate than its use as an independent effect in the model because it accounted for interactions with the other...

Cymbella Agardh IBSS Repository

The influence of temperature and humidity on abundance and richness of Calliphoridae (Diptera) Iheringia, Sér. Zool.
Azevedo,Rodrigo R.; Krüger,Rodrigo F..
The blowfly species are important components in necrophagous communities of the Neotropics. Besides being involved in the degradation of animal organic matter, they may serve as vectors for pathogens and parasites, and also cause primary and secondary myiasis. The occurrence pattern of these species is well defined, yet it is still not very clear which of these environmental factors determine the structure of the assemblies. This paper was developed to evaluate the influence of mean temperature and relative humidity variation in the abundance and richness of blowflies in the Brazilian southernmost state, Rio Grande do Sul, where temperature variation is well marked throughout the year. To evaluate this objective, WOT (Wind Oriented Trap) were installed...

Infoteca-e
CEZAR, I. M..

Plaisant, M.
Empirical models already exist for ambient noise spectral density function of frequency, sea state or wind speed but they give no information on the spatial structure or coherence of the noise field which is essential as soon as array beamforming is involved. We have developed a model which computes the spatial coherence matrix of the noise field due to a continuous distribution of sources located at the sea surface, and also the noise power spectral density after classical beamforming on an equidistant hydrophones linear array. In this model, propagation effects like rays bending due to variations of index of refraction and multiple bottom and surface reflections are taken into account. Principles of the modeling are presented and results demonstrate that...

Gilly, Bernard.
The bio-economic models in fishing : approaches and limits Bio-economic modelling technics for jisheries have been developed from the late jïfties. They are currently based on neo-classic economic therory. Their use has led to strong theoretical development in the Jield ofjsheries management, but they are utterly lacking qf pratical sense because the basic assumptions are not sujjïciently close to the reality. The main types of models are presented (statie and dynamic. determinist and random, simulation and optimisation) and their bounds are discussed.

Vanhoutte Brunier, Alice.
Atrazine is the most widely used herbicide on cultured areas. This pesticide is degraded during its transport in rivers and streams, to the coastal area. Marennes Oléron is the main french oyster farming area, receiving the fresh water from the Charente river and ail the drainage coming from the coastal cultivated marshlands. Agriculture is thus claimed to be responsible for shellfish mortality in the aquaculture area. To simulate the changing fate of atrazine in the environment, a modelling strategy has been selected. a) First, using a two-way hydrodynamic model developped by IFREMER, the atrazine dilution trail in the Marennes Oléron area was simulated.Combined with larvae bioassays of Crassostrea gigas (Japanese oyster), the results show atrazine rates...

Balouin, Yann.
Tidal inlets are among the most dynamic morphological features along the world coastlines. Their evolution and stability, frequently critical to the local environment, are dependent on the relative influence of longshore transport along adjacent coasts and tidal flows in the inlet. Main objective of this study was to quantify the processes involved in the inlet morphodynamics in order to determine the key parameters of these systems and to predict medium to long-term evolution. Morphology evolution (bathymetry, remote sensed video data), hydrodynamics and sediment transport measurements were analyzed to quantify the inlet dynamics. Our approach was based on the study of hydrosedimentary processes along the adjacent coastline, and inlet responses to...
