The present work aimed at better understanding metal and metalloid bioaccumulation in the edible Pacific blue shrimp Litopenaeus stylirostris, using both laboratory and field approaches. In the laboratory, the bioaccumulation kinetics of Ag, Cd, Co, Cr, and Zn have been investigated in shrimp exposed via seawater and food, using the corresponding gamma-emitting radiotracers (Ag-110m, Cd-109, Co-57, Cr-51, and Zn-65) and highly sensitive nuclear detection techniques. Results showed that hepatopancreas and intestine concentrated the metals to the highest extent among the blue shrimp organs and tissues. Moulting was found to play a non negligible detoxification role for Co, Cr and, to a lesser extent, Zn. Metal retention by L stylirostris widely varied (from... |

Southern king crab Lithodes santolla specimens were captured during INIDEP research cruises in the San Jorge Gulf (45 degree -47' S, 64 degree -68' W), Argentine Sea, in March, April, July and August 2001 and August 2002. In order to determine qualitative and quantitative characters related to the shell ageing, a macroscopic examination of specimens was performed. The main considered characters were: shell hardness, ventral shell coloration, necrosis development, merus meat content, kind of epibionts, abrasions length on coxa and maximum size of ventral necrosis. A hierarchical grouping from the qualitative characters was elaborated and associations among these characters were established. Thus, a key to discriminate the specimens in different groups was... |

Panulirus homarus homarus is the most widely distributed among the three P. homarus subspecies and is the second most important spiny lobster in the Kenyan lobster fishery after P. ornatus. Growth and moulting of lobsters, held in concrete tanks with a flow-through seawater supply and at ambient temperatures, were monitored for 18 months (October, 2001 - March, 2003). Both moult increment and moulting frequency were inversely correlated with size. Mean moult increment ranged from 4mm in the 36-45 mm CL size class to 0.6 mm in the 86-95 mm CL size class. Mean intermoult period increased from 49 days in the 46-55 mm CL size class to 81 days in the 86-95 mm CL size class. Growth rates were 19% and 46% higher for males and females, respectively during the... |

The Artemia strain from Great Salt Lake (GSL 375) was used. Total body extracts and hemolymph of Artemia were purified by solvent partition and column chromatography. Moulting-hormone concentrations were then determined by a specific radioimmunoassay (RIA). Results are expressed in ng ecdysteroid activity/g fresh weight (or per ml). Initially, the RIA data on extracts of adults were highly variable. The use of a more accurate sampling technique based on the reproductive cycle of the females allowed to determine a hormone activity pattern. In females, moulting cycles alternate with vitellogenic cycles. The lowest values of ecdysone (3-6 ng ecdysone equivalents/g fresh body weight or ml hemolymph) occur during... |

The breeding frequency, fecundity, egg hatchability, larval output and viability of pond-reared, mature Macrobrachium rosenbergii females were individually followed up during 180 d. Sexually mature prawns were maintained under controlled laboratory conditions (28.7 C and 12-h light/d) in a 190-L freshwater recirculation system and fed a formulated diet. Ovarian development, moulting and spawning events were checked daily. At least six consecutive moults were recorded for each of the 18 females. The duration of the intermoult period averaged 27.5 d and was not affected by ovarian development or spawning, but intermoult periods followed by spawning had significantly lower growth rates. From a total of 126 moulting events recorded, egg... |
