The world aquaculture production (fresh and marine waters) achieved 11.1 million tonnes in 1986 (FAO, 1989). The molluscs represented 21 % of the total production. Marine aquaculture with 5.45 million tonnes reached 49% of the total production. The marine cultivated mollusc production was 2.25 million tonnes due mainly to oysters (36%), mussels (34%), clams (16%), and scallops (6%). As the aquaculture production is clearly identified in the statistics only since 1984, the evolution of the production of oysters and mussels for the last 15 years has been analyzed with the FAO data for the total catch (fisheries and culture). By comparison of the two statistics for the same year (1986), the fisheries represented only 17% for oysters and 16% for mussels. Fig.... |

The development of fish and shellfish farming is facing several challenges linked to the infancy of the industry: i.e. domestication, genetic improvement of disease resistance, genetic improvement of feed efficiency to fish meal and fish oil substitution by vegetal products, development of adapted vaccines, supply of fry or spat at high quality and high robustness, adaptation to environmental change, production of healthy, high quality consumer products and limitation of environmental impact of the activity and escapees. Over recent years, the EU and individual countries have supported the development of genomic tools for some aquaculture species (e.g. rainbow trout, sea bass, sea bream, turbot pacific oyster, Atlantic salmon). New perspectives arise... |

Since 2014, France’s blue mussel industry has been facing heavy mortality outbreaks (90-100%) affecting both juveniles and adults. This report presents evidence of heavy genomic abnormalities associated with mortality outbreaks in blue mussels, Mytilus edulis-galloprovincialis, from the Atlantic coast of France. In this study, ploidy characteristics of hemic cells were investigated using Flow CytoMetry (FCM), revealing an unusual, broad continuum of ploidy distribution from hypodiploidy to tetraploidy. FCM was additionally used to evaluate, at individual and populations levels, different thresholds of genomic abnormality (GA%) using the percentage of non-diploid nuclei. Individual mussels were considered to be abnormal when more than 10% of hemocytes in... |

Mass mortality outbreaks (90-100%) in both juvenile and adult blue mussels were reported in 2014 along the Pertuis Charentais area of the French Atlantic coast. A series of studies were carried out to learn more about the phenomenon through detecting pathogens, describing environmental conditions and establishing the physiological status of the animals. Bacteria identif ied as belonging to the V. splendidus species were detected in dying mussels and seem able to cause mortality in blue mussels in the laboratory. Unusual environmental conditions (large amounts of fresh water, re-suspension of sediments during a series of storms, and a high renewal rate of specific water masses in Brittany’s Pertuis area) may be partially responsible for sparking the phenomen |

The quantity of mussels cultivated on wooden poles called « bouchots », in Mont Saint-Michel bay, has been estimated in april 2002, by volume, number and weight. To do so, a sampling strategy has been conceived, operated and then optimized, taking into account the spatial distribution of this stock and the material and human constraints (especially the amount of persons and working days available). The sampling plan uses procedures of stratification, degrees, regression, so as to reach the optimum precision related to cost. The operation took a great advantage of the efficient help of mussel farmers. During the first day, the task consisted to estimate the number and position of poles occupied by mussels, with the help of 5 persons on boat. The following 2... |

Water samples were collected around the communities of a hydrothermal mussel, Bathymodiolus sp., in the Lucky Strike (1700 m depth) and Menez Gwen (850 m depth) areas, Mid Atlantic Ridge, and analysed for chemical constituents. The environment surrounding the organisms consists in sea water (88 to 100%) mixed with hydrothermal fluid with pH between 6.2 and 8, Sigma S (H2S + HS-) concentrations from 0 to 62 mu mol l(-1). High dissolved organic carbon (DOC) concentrations suggest a highly productive ecosystem. Production of ammonium and DOG, consumption of nitrate and sulfide in the vicinity of the organisms are among the environmental changes found in relation with local biological activity. Concentrations of Cu and Pb were high, implying that the organisms... |

Domoic acid (DA) is a potent toxin produced by bloom-forming phytoplankton in the genus which is responsible for causing amnesic shellfish poisoning (ASP) in humans. ASP symptoms include vomiting. diarrhea, and in more severe cases confusion. loss of memory. disorientation. and even coma or death. This paper describes the development and validation of a rapid. sensitive. enzyme linked immunosorbent assay test kit for detecting DA using a monoclonal antibody. The assay gives equivalent results to those obtained using standard high performance liquid chromatography. fluorenylmetbox-yearbonyl high performance liquid chromatography, or liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry methods. It has a linear range from 1.1-3 ppb and was used successfully to measure DA... |
