Litterfall production in intact and selectively logged forests in southern of Amazonia as a function of basal area of vegetation and plant density Acta Amazonica
ALMEIDA,Everton José; LUIZÃO,Flávio; RODRIGUES,Domingos de Jesus.
Nutrient recycling in the forest is linked to the production and decomposition of litter, which are essential processes for forest maintenance, especially in regions of nutritionally poor soils. Human interventions in forest such as selecttive logging may have strong impacts on these processes. The objectives of this study were to estimate litterfall production and evaluate the influence of environmental factors (basal area of vegetation, plant density, canopy cover, and soil physicochemical properties) and anthropogenic factors (post-management age and exploited basal area) on this production, in areas of intact and exploited forest in southern Amazonia, located in the northern parts of Mato Grosso state. This study was conducted at five locations and the...

Laboratory decomposition of Dalbergia nigra all. ex. benth and Eucalyptus grandis w.hill ex. maiden leaves in forest and eucalypt plantation soils Acta Botanica
Rezende,Juliana L. P.; Garcia,Queila S.; Scotti,Maria Rita M. M. L..
The objective was to evaluate the decomposition of D. nigra and E. grandis leaves under laboratory conditions when incubated in soils from Atlantic Forest and from a 40-year-old eucalypt plantation for a year. The obtained values of pH in forest and eucalypt plantation soils were 5.61 and 4.47 and for aluminum 0.32 and 1.89mEqx100, respectively. A great number of microorganisms (total fungi, phosphate solubilising and cellulolytic organisms) were found in forest soil. Litterbag study revealed a higher mass loss of the leaves in forest soil in the first four months (c. 30%). In the eucalypt plantation soils loss was observed only after eight months (c. 40%). The initial contents of N and P were greater in D. nigra than in E. grandis leaves, although lignin...

Drying Temperature - Duration Impacts on Moisture, Carbon, and Nitrogen Losses from Broiler Litter CIGR Journal
Sanjay B. Shah; NC State University.
Drying poultry litter (PL) prior to analysis minimizes nutrient transformations and losses and facilitates sample preparation. Drying also allows comparison among different litters on dry-weight (dw) basis. However, losses of carbon (C) as CO2 and nitrogen (N) as NH3 (NH3) can confound moisture losses. Thus, the apparent moisture content (MC) that does not separately account for C and N losses will be higher than the true MC. Further, use of apparent MC may also result in overestimation of C and N concentrations (dw basis). Broiler litter (BL) MC was determined using FD 50 (flask-dried at 50°C for 24 h), FD 70 (flask-dried at 70°C for 16 h), CT70 (oven-dried at 70°C to constant mass), and CT105 (oven-dried at 105°C to constant mass). Carbon and NH3-N...

Matter turnover in the oligotrophic restinga ecosystem and the importance of the key species Clusia hilariana Biota Neotropica
Brito,Letícia da Silva; Irmler,Ulrich; Forte,Bruno Vasconcelos Guimarães; Xavier,Tatiane Pereira; Martins,Rodrigo Lemes.
Abstract: Restingas are sandy areas spread along the Brazilian coast made up of a mosaic of forest and open woodland vegetation adapted to varying conditions of aridity, oligotrophy and salinity. Two vegetation types are very common in southeast Brazilian restingas, open Clusia formations and seasonally dry forest formation. Litter production and nutrient (C and N) turnover were studied comparatively in forest formations and Clusia formations, in vegetation patches with and without Clusia hilariana. The results showed that the breakdown process is extremely retarded in Clusia formations, with or without C. hilariana, leading to C accumulation in the soil. Microbial and soil fauna activity is lower in Clusia formations in comparison to forest formations;...

Microbial respiration and chemical composition of different sediment fractions in waterbodies of the upper Paraná River floodplain, Brazil BJB
THOMAZ,S. M.; PEREIRA,G.; PAGIORO,T. A..
Four size fractions of the sediment of six environments of the upper Paraná River floodplain were analyzed for carbon, nitrogen, and phosphorus contents and microbial respiration (oxygen consumption). Particle size did not affect nitrogen and phosphorus content or microbial activity, but did affect carbon content (F = 4.274, df = 3; 20, p = 0.020). The carbon concentration of ultra-fine particles was significantly lower than that of other sizes of sediment particles. Microbial respiration values were well predicted by sediment chemical composition, as shown by multiple regression (microbial respiration = -0.39 - 0.210C + 0.108N + 0.796P; F = 7.0495, p = 0.0022). However, phosphorus was the element which best explained the microbial respiration (partial...

Tedesco,Marino José; Lauschner,Márcio Henrique; Gianello,Clesio; Bortolon,Leandro; Kray,Claudio Henrique.
Brazil is one of the leaders in the production and trading of tobacco leaves in the global market, which results in a large amount of residues that would be recycled and used as soil fertilizers in agriculture. This research aimed to study the land disposal potential and agricultural use of tobacco processing residues (TPRs), their mineralization and the nutrient supply to the plants. The study was carried out in an open area using pots with 32dm³ of a sandy soil (Paleudult), provided with water drainage collectors and tilled with three corn plants each. Eighteen treatments were tested with mineral fertilization, poultry manure (PM), earthworm compost (EC) and increasing rates (0, 7.5, 15, 30 e 60t ha-1) of TPR D (dust) and TPR S (stem fibers).Treatments...

NITROGEN FLUXES IN THROUGHFALL AND LITTERFALL IN TWO NOTHOFAGUS FORESTS IN SOUTHERN CHILE Gayana Botánica
Staelens,Jeroen; Godoy,Roberto; Oyarzún,Carlos; Thibo,Karen; Verheyen,Kris.
Nitrogen return by leaf litterfall was compared with atmospheric nitrogen deposition for two deciduous Nothofagus stands in southern Chile, located in areas with contrasting land use. The litterfall return of nitrogen in a Nothofagus alpina (Poepp. et Endl.) Oerst. stand at San Pablo de Tregua, in the Cordillera de los Andes, was similar to the litterfall return in a Nothofagus obliqua (Mirb.) Oerst. stand at Paillaco, in the Central Depression. In contrast, the net throughfall and stemflow deposition differed significantly between the two stands. At San Pablo de Tregua, the annual bulk deposition of NH4+ and NO3- was significantly higher than the throughfall and stemflow deposition reaching the forest floor. This demonstrates an uptake of inorganic...

SEASONAL VARIATION IN LEAF LITTER NUTRIENT CONCENTRATIONS OF VALDIVIAN RAINFOREST TREES Gayana Botánica
Lusk,Christopher H.; Matus,Francisco; Moreno-Chacón,María; Saldaña,Alfredo; Jiménez-Castillo,Mylthon.
Resorption of nutrients from senescing tissues is an important aspect of the nutrient economy of perennial plants, and a major influence on ecosystem nutrient dynamics. Attempts to interpret the adaptive significance of variation in nutrient resorption efficiency have met with little success, leading some scientists to emphasize the need for more work on the biochemical and physiological basis of resorption. One hypothesis suggests than variation in resorption is controlled by sink-source effects within the plant. According to this hypothesis, we might expect resorption to be positively correlated with plant growth rates. This could be expected not only for comparisons among species or populations, but also when comparing conspecific individuals growing at...

Seagrass ecosystems IBSS Repository
Phillips, R. C.; Milchakova, N. A..
The seagrass ecosystem is defined as a unit of biological organization comprised of interacting biotic and abiotic components. The structural components are shelter and food and feeding pathways and biodiversity. Functional components include the rate of nutrient cycling, the rate of energy flow, and biological regulation. Healthy intact seagrass ecosystems provide services since they relate to the health, stability and well-being of the environment in which they live, but also to that of human populations.

ABSTRACT: The aim of this work was to present in a didactic way the biogeochemical cycles of the four most important elements and substances on global chemistry: water, carbon, nitrogen and phosphorous. The importance of these elements and substances becomes from the great magnitude of mass and energy utilized in their processes, and on their essentiality on biosphere formation and maintenance. This work intends to showthe interdependence between these great cycles and the biosphere, and the way that the human activity influences on the chemical dynamic of the globe, and the consequences of these shifts for the humanity itself.

Atmospheric deposition is an important component of the nutrient cycles of terrestrial ecosystems, but field measurements are especially scarce in tropical regions. In this study we analysed 15 months of precipitation chemistry collected in an old growth tropical forest located in French Guiana. We measured nutrient inputs via bulk precipitation and throughfall and used the canopy budget model to estimate nutrient fluxes via canopy exchange and dry deposition. Based on this method we quantified net fluxes of macronutrients and compared their contribution to internal cycling rates via litterfall. Our results suggest that while atmospheric deposition of nitrogen was relatively high (13 kg ha−1 year−1), and mainly in organic forms, the N inputs via litterfall...
