Effect of vitamin K on bone integrity and eggshell quality of white hen at the final phase of the laying cycle R. Bras. Zootec.
Fernandes,Jovanir Inês Müller; Murakami,Alice Eiko; Scapinello,Claudio; Moreira,Ivan; Varela,Elkin Varela.
The effect of four levels of dietary vitamin K (vit. K) on production, egg quality and bone structure of laying hens near the end of the production cycle were studied. A total of 192 Hy-Line, W-36 hens, 67 weeks of age, were distributed into a completely randomized design with four treatments (0, 2, 8, 32 mg vit. K/kg of diet), six replicates and eight birds per experimental unit. Corn-soybean-meal basal diets were isonitrogenous (15.5% crude protein), isoenergetic (2,790 kcal ME/kg), isocalcium (4.25% Ca) and isophosphorus (0.40% available P). Vitamin K supplementation did not alter egg mass, feed intake, feed conversion (kg/kg), bone breaking strength, specific egg gravity, eggshell weight, thickness and percentage of thin and cracked shell. A linear...

Action of calcium binders.: Formation of calcium salts in the intestinal tract and the blood circulatory system ABCL
Martínez Yaquelo,César.
Calcium binders are water- soluble substances whose anionic part can possibly react with calcium cations present in any part of the human body. Some examples of calcium binders are phosphoric, oxalic and phytic acids and their alkaline salts present in many natural foods, in some foods containing additives, and in some medicines. There are also uric and lactic acids that are the result of normal metabolism. The first negative action of calcium binders takes place in the intestinal tract when they react with calcium of dairy food. The latter produces a combination of calcium binder anions with calcium cations, and then an insoluble salt that precipitates as small solid particles that cannot be assimilated and which are eliminated in the faeces. The second...

In Osteoporosis, differentiation of mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) improves bone marrow adipogenesis Biol. Res.
Pino,Ana María; Rosen,Clifford J; Rodríguez,J. Pablo.
The formation, maintenance, and repair of bone tissue involve close interlinks between two stem cell types housed in the bone marrow: the hematologic stem cell originating osteoclasts and mesenchymal stromal cells (MSCs) generating osteoblasts. In this review, we consider malfunctioning of MSCs as essential for osteoporosis. In osteoporosis, increased bone fragility and susceptibility to fractures result from increased osteoclastogenesis and insufficient osteoblastogenesis. MSCs are the common precursors for both osteoblasts and adipocytes, among other cell types. MSCs' commitment towards either the osteoblast or adipocyte lineages depends on suitable regulatory factors activating lineage-specific transcriptional regulators. In osteoporosis, the reciprocal...

Low-dose doxycycline prevents inflammatory bone resorption in rats BJMBR
Bezerra,M.M.; Brito,G.A.C.; Ribeiro,R.A.; Rocha,F.A.C..
Matrix metalloproteinases (MMP) are considered to be key initiators of collagen degradation, thus contributing to bone resorption in inflammatory diseases. We determined whether subantimicrobial doses of doxycycline (DX) (<=10 mg kg-1 day-1), a known MMP inhibitor, could inhibit bone resorption in an experimental periodontitis model. Thirty male Wistar rats (180-200 g) were subjected to placement of a nylon thread ligature around the maxillary molars and sacrificed after 7 days. Alveolar bone loss (ABL) was measured macroscopically in one hemiarcade and the contralateral hemiarcade was processed for histopathologic analysis. Groups of six animals each were treated with DX (2.5, 5 or 10 mg kg-1 day-1, sc, 7 days) and compared to nontreated (NT) rats. NT...

Analysis of fracture healing in osteopenic bone caused by disuse: experimental study BJMBR
Paiva,A.G.; Yanagihara,G.R.; Macedo,A.P.; Ramos,J.; Issa,J.P.M.; Shimano,A.C..
Osteoporosis has become a serious global public health issue. Hence, osteoporotic fracture healing has been investigated in several previous studies because there is still controversy over the effect osteoporosis has on the healing process. The current study aimed to analyze two different periods of bone healing in normal and osteopenic rats. Sixty, 7-week-old female Wistar rats were randomly divided into four groups: unrestricted and immobilized for 2 weeks after osteotomy (OU2), suspended and immobilized for 2 weeks after osteotomy (OS2), unrestricted and immobilized for 6 weeks after osteotomy (OU6), and suspended and immobilized for 6 weeks after osteotomy (OS6). Osteotomy was performed in the middle third of the right tibia 21 days after tail...

Ghrelin plasma levels, gastric ghrelin cell density and bone mineral density in women with rheumatoid arthritis BJMBR
Maksud,F.A.N.; Kakehasi,A.M.; Guimarães,M.F.B.R.; Machado,C.J.; Barbosa,A.J.A..
Generalized bone loss can be considered an extra-articular manifestation of rheumatoid arthritis (RA) that may lead to the occurrence of fractures, resulting in decreased quality of life and increased healthcare costs. The peptide ghrelin has demonstrated to positively affect osteoblasts in vitro and has anti-inflammatory actions, but the studies that correlate ghrelin plasma levels and RA have contradictory results. We aimed to evaluate the correlation between total ghrelin plasma levels, density of ghrelin-immunoreactive cells in the gastric mucosa, and bone mineral density (BMD) in twenty adult women with established RA with 6 months or more of symptoms (mean age of 52.70±11.40 years). Bone metabolism and vascular calcification BJMBR
Danilevicius,C.F.; Lopes,J.B.; Pereira,R.M.R..
Osteoporosis and atherosclerosis are chronic degenerative diseases which have been considered to be independent and whose common characteristic is increasing incidence with age. At present, growing evidence indicates the existence of a correlation between cardiovascular disease and osteoporosis, irrespective of age. The morbidity and mortality of osteoporosis is mainly related to the occurrence of fractures. Atherosclerosis shows a high rate of morbidity and especially mortality because of its clinical repercussions such as angina pectoris, acute myocardial infarction, stroke, and peripheral vascular insufficiency. Atherosclerotic disease is characterized by the accumulation of lipid material in the arterial wall resulting from autoimmune and inflammatory...
