FRUIT (PERICARP AND SEED) ONTOGENY OF SIDA SPECIES Gayana Botánica
Muneratto,Junior C; Souza,Luiz A.
Fruits (pericarps and seeds) of the weedy species Sida rhombifolia L., S. urens L. and S. regnellii R. E. Fr. were analyzed structurally using light and scanning electron microscopy. The yellowish brown calyx is persistent on the mature fruit and consists of a crystalliferous hypodermis with U-shaped wall thickenings and homogeneous mesophyll. Fruits are schizocarpic, of the subtype coccarium, with a fibrous endocarp. Seeds are exotegmic and the embryos are clearly bent, with folded cotyledons. Structural features that are potentially significant to species' characterization are the structure of the ovary, the morphology of the mericarp apex, the pattern of the reticulate sclerenchymatous endocarp and the presence or absence of nonglandular trichomes in...

Protein content and electrophoretic profile of fat body and ovary extracts from workers of Melipona quadrifasciata anthidioides (Hymenoptera, Meliponini) Iheringia, Sér. Zool.
Oliveira,Vagner T. Paes de; Cruz-Landim,Carminda da.
Workers of Melipona quadrifasciata anthidioides (Lepeletier, 1836) develop their ovaries and lay eggs, therefore the production of vitellogenin is expected. In electrophoretic profiles only fat body extracts from nurse workers and ovary extracts from newly-emerged workers show protein with molecular mass similar to vitellogenin. However, an increase in the protein content was detected in forager fat body. This increase was attributed to storage of vitellogenin or other proteins in the previous phase and not discharged into the hemolymph or to an effect of the increased titre of juvenile hormone in this phase of worker life over the fat body functioning.

The Nme gene family in fish ArchiMer
Desvignes, T.; Fostier, A.; Fauvel, Christian; Bobe, J..
The Nme gene family, also known as Nm23 or NDPK, is a very ancient gene family that can be found in all kingdoms of life. In the late eighties, a gene of the Nme family, NME1, was identified as the first metastatic suppressor gene, resulting in a major interest for this family. Due to the complexity of the family, the need for a unified and evolutionary-supported gene nomenclature was recently stressed by the scientific community. Based on a complete evolutionary history study of the gene family in metazoans and vertebrates, a unified nomenclature was recently proposed and accepted by gene nomenclature consortia. In addition to its well-documented role in tumor metastasis, members of the Nme family are also involved in a wide variety of cellular and...

Molecular cloning of flounder Xp18, a newly identified highly conserved protein mainly expressed in the ovary ArchiMer
Cachot, Jerome; Bultelle, Florence; Drouot, Laurent; Galgani, Francois; Frebourg, Thierry; Leboulenger, François; Danger, Jean-michel.
Screening of a flounder ovary cDNA library with a rainbow trout p53 probe led to the isolation of a p53-unrelated cDNA encoding an unknown 161 amino acid protein. In view of its apparent molecular weight and yet unknown function, the deduced protein was named Xp18. Corresponding orthologous cDNAs or expressed sequence tags have been identified in several species including human, rodents, bovine, chicken and zebrafish and a related cDNA has also been isolated in the fruit fly. Deduced amino acid sequences appeared to be extremely well conserved throughout vertebrate evolution. Structure predictions suggested that Xp 18 may correspond to an integral protein comprising four transmembrane domains. The charged C-termini of all known vertebrate Xp18-like...

Protective Effect of Caffeic Acid Phenethyl Ester (CAPE) on IschemiaReperfusion Injury in Rat Ovary International Journal of Morphology
Görkem,Ümit; Togrul,Cihan; Sahin,Izzet; Coskun,Bugra; Ozat,Mustafa; Güngör,Tayfun; Deveci,Engin.
The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of caffeic acid phenethyl ester (CAPE) as a prophylactic agent on ischemia/reperfusion (I/R) injury in the rat ovary. A total of 28 Wistar rats were divided into 4 equal groups: (I) sham, (II) ischemia, (III) ischemia + reperfusion, and (IV) IR + CAPE. In groups I and II, ovary torsion was not performed and no drug was administered. In group III, 1 hour of ischemia and 2 hours of reperfusion were performed and no drug was given. Ovarian tissue concentrations of malondialdehyde were significantly higher in the torsion and detorsion groups compared with the sham and Cape groups (P<0.005). The detorsion group showed preantral ovarian follicles and luteal folicules around the blood vessels and positive...

Ovarian Folliculogenesis in the Smallnose Fanskate Sympterygia bonapartii (Müller & Henle, 1841) (Chondrichthyes, Rajidae) International Journal of Morphology
Díaz-Andrade,M. C; Galíndez,E. J; López-Cazorla,A; Estecondo,S.
Chondrichthyes have become an important economic resource in the last decades, with Argentina as one of the countries that exploits more sharks and skates, even at levels that exceed de limits of many species. However, there is a scarce knowledge of the reproductive biology of this group, particularly from species inhabiting the Southern hemisphere. This work shows the most relevant facts during folliculogenesis in Sympterygia bonapartii. Results show that germinal cells are present in immature and maturing females. The most important facts that vary along de follicular development are the number of types and layers of follicular cells, the establishment of thin projections from the follicular cells and the degree of development of the thecae. Follicular...

Endocrine Integration of Fetal Ovaries Grafted under Kidney Capsule of Unilaterally or Bilaterally Orchidectomized Male Hamster International Journal of Morphology
Luna,S. L; Peña,S. I; Cuevas,A. J; Brown,D. I.
Mammalian ovary development undergoes important changes during the perinatal period, moment when follicles are assembled and start to develop in a process not well known, involving endocrine and paracrine factors. In order to investigate the effect of two different hormonal environments on the early development of the ovary, we used an autologous transplant model in which Syrian hamster fetal ovaries were grafted under the kidney capsule of males hosts previously unilaterally or bilaterally orchidectomized. After 35 days of graft, ovaries and kidney parenchyme of the host male did not present signs of rejection. Ovaries contained primordial, primary follicles, secondary follicles and few tertiary follicles with morphological features similar to ovaries of...

Cystadenocarcinoma Arising from Ovary in a Three Year Old Doberman Bitch International Journal of Morphology
Ajadi,A. Temitope; Antia,E. Richard; Akang,E. Effiong.
A three- year- old Doberman was presented with complaint of lethargy and weight- loss. Physical examination revealed a mass in the right abdomen. Laboratory abnormalities included anaemia, azotaemia and metabolic acidosis. Sonogram of the mass was an anaechoic area surrounded by hypoechoic tissue. The mass was located between the right kidney and ovary and showed papillary and tubular pattern of cystadenocarcinoma. Nephroureterectomy and ovariohysterectomy was performed; however bitch was euthanized owing to poor improvement, while necropsy of the left kidney revealed an end-stage kidney. It was concluded that the cystadenocarcinoma must have arisen secondary to a primary ovarian adenocarcinoma through stromal invasion.

The Female Reproductive System of Zearaja chilensis (Guichenot, 1848) (Chondrichthyes, Rajidae): Gametogenesis and Microscopic Validation of Maturity Criteria International Journal of Morphology
Wehitt,Anahí; Di Giacomo,Edgardo E; Galíndez,Elena J.
Chondrichthyans are extremely susceptible to overfishing due, among other things, to their reproductive adaptations. Basic knowledge of reproductive parameters is essential, both of ecological and for economic points of view. Zearaja chilensis is a valuable economic resource in South America. This work analyzes the microanatomy of female reproductive system, as well as the size of the onset of vitellogenesis. The material was fixed in Bouin and processed using routine histological techniques. Both ovaries are equally functional. Folliculogenesis depicts the same pattern of other Chondrichthyans. Follicles with different degrees of maturation coexist in mature animals, with the exception of oogonia, which were only found in immature individuals. Likewise,...

Pineal Gland Plays a Role in Gonadal Development after Eyelids Separation in Puppies International Journal of Morphology
Abou-Easa,Khalil; El-Magd,Mohammed Abu; Tousson,Ehab; Hassanin,Amin; Shukry,Mustafa; Salama,Mohammed.
Several functional and morphological studies have been conducted on the pineal gland in many mammalian species; however, no published reports are available on the role of pineal gland on the gonadal development before and after eyelids separation in puppies. Therefore, this study aimed to trace the postnatal histo-morphological changes in the pineal gland and gonads of puppies before (2, 10 and 11 days old) and after (25, 35 and 40 days old) eyelids separation in an attempt to investigate the possible role of pineal gland on the gonadal development. In general, the differentiation of pineal cells, interstitial endocrine cells of testes and stromal ovarian cells coincides with the start of eyelids separation in puppies. Histological examination of stained...

Ultrastructural Features of Ovary of the Female African Giant Rat (Cricetomys gambianus, Waterhouse) During Oestrous Cycle International Journal of Morphology
Akinloye,Adebayo Koyuum; Oke,Bankole Olusiji.
Fine structures of the ovary during the oestrous cycle in African giant rats (Cricetomys gambianus Waterhouse) were described in the present study. Ultrastructural features of the germinal epithelium and the medullar of the ovary were similar at different stages of the oestrous cycle. During mid proestrus, there was disorganization of the inner layer of the granulosa cells of secondary follicles to form the antrum. At late proestrus/early estrus, antrum formation had advanced and there was evidence of reorganization of granulosa cells. Fine structures of the ovary during mid estrus include follicles with variably shaped mitochondria, profiles of Golgi complexes and dense concentration of ribosomes. The theca interna shared similar ultrastructure with the...

Morphology of the Phytophagous bug Platyscytus decempunctatus (Carvalho) (Heteroptera: Miridae) Neotropical Entomology
Pires,Evaldo M.; Ferreira,Paulo S.F.; Guedes,Raul N.C.; Serrão,José E..
Platyscytus decempunctatus Carvalho is a small mirid living throughout its life cicle plant Solanum cernuum Vell. (Solanaceae). The internal morphology of P. decempunctatus was studied and found that the female has a telotrophic ovary with three ovarioles in the right ovary and five in the left one. In the male reproductive trait there is a well developed tubular accessory gland. The phytophagous feeding habitat of P. decempunctatus was confirmed by the observations of chlorophyll pigments in the gut of all dissected specimens. The tubular salivary glands and the Malpighian tubules were also discussed.

Evaluation of egg morphology from ethanol preserved females of Anastrepha sp.2 aff. fraterculus (Diptera: Tephritidae) Neotropical Entomology
Selivon,Denise; Vretos,Christina; Perondini,André L.P..
Features of eggshell morphology in Anastrepha sp.2 aff. fraterculus were evaluated in mature ovariole ova dissected from females preserved in ethanol, and from ovaries of fresh killed females in comparison to that of freshly laid eggs. The characteristics of sculpturing as well as of internal structure of the chorion in oviposited eggs could be observed in both samples of mature ovariole ova. Ethanol preserved females may be used as a source of eggs for morphological studies allowing this kind of analysis to species whose eggs are not readily obtained.

A case of intersex occurrence in Steindachneridion parahybae (Steindachner, 1877) (Siluriformes: Pimelodidae) under captivity condition: a cytogenetic and morphological study Neotropical Ichthyology
Honji,Renato M.; Caneppele,Danilo; Pandolfi,Matias; Nostro,Fabiana L. Lo; Moreira,Renata G..
ABSTRACT Little is known about reproductive biology of endangered Steindachneridion parahybae , a gonochoristic teleost species inhabiting the Paraíba do Sul River Basin, and herein is the first description of intersex in S. parahybae juvenile. The normal appearance of ovaries and testes in juvenile from the same lot of breeding were also described for comparison, even as cytogenetic analysis was performed in these juveniles. One specimen was a priori classified as female due to the macroscopic characteristic of ovaries, with small yellow oocytes, without fringes (a main characteristic of catfish male), and larger than testes; however the microscopic analysis revealed the presence of ovotestes, including the complete spermatogenesis. S. parahybae had...

This work aims to study the female reproductive tract of silky sharks, Carcharhinus falciformis, captured in the South and Equatorial Atlantic Ocean. Samples were collected between January 2008 and March 2010 through oceanic commercial vessels that targeted tuna and swordfish, with a total of 17 females collected. The methodologies followed for analyzing the ovaries of those females included both macroscopic and histological analysis. Macroscopically, it was possible to determine that the ovaries on these sharks is suspended by mesenteries in the anterior section of the body cavity, heavily irrigated by blood vessels, and contains a wide range of oocytes. Ovaries were found in three distinct maturational stages: Stage I (Immature), Stage II (Maturing) and...
