Reef fishes captured by recreational spearfishing on reefs of Bahia State, northeast Brazil Biota Neotropica
Nunes,José de Anchieta Cintra da Costa; Medeiros,Diego Valverde; Reis-Filho,José Amorim; Sampaio,Cláudio Luis Santos; Barros,Francisco.
Although recreational spearfishing is a growing activity, its impacts are poorly understood. This paper aims to present data on reef fishes captured by recreational spearfishing in the Bahia State, Northeastern Brazil. We analyzed 168 photos of spearfishing conducted in the reefs of this region between 2006 and 2008. A total of 1.121 fish belonging to 48 species were captured in three sub-regions of the Bahia coastline: Litoral Norte (LN), Salvador (SSA) and Baixo Sul (BS). The main species caught were: Scomberomorus brasiliensis (n = 191), Sphyraena barracuda (n = 153), Lutjanus jocu (n = 150) and Caranx bartholomaei (n = 141); these four species represented 56.5% of total captures. Over the sampling period, the highest values of catch rates per day were...

Analysis of the management of the sardine crisis Sardinella aurita in Venezuela and commentary on fishing gears and statistics Boletín de Investigaciones
Gómez Gaspar,Alfredo.
ABSTRACT The sardine Sardinella aurita, fished since 1927, is Venezuela's most significant fishery resource. The national catch reached a record high of 200,000 tons in 2004 but diminished nationally by 50% in 2005 and by 90% on Margarita Island, marking the beginning of a crisis in sardine fishing. Based on indicators of overexploitation, the fishing authority increased the minimum size required for capture and prohibited fishing for three months in 2013. The validity of these measures is studied here. A reduction in size may indicate intensive exploitation, and thus, the records of 28,217 sardines measured between 2002 and 2016 in the southeast region of Margarita Island were examined. Prior to the crisis, in 2003 and 2004, the average size was 195.48...

Status of Lutjanus synagris in three protected areas of the Colombian Caribbean: assessment based on limited data Boletín de Investigaciones
Martínez-Viloria,Héctor Manuel; Franke-Ante,Rebeca; Narváez Barandica,Juan Carlos; De La Hoz Maestre,Javier.
ABSTRACT With the purpose of evaluating the status of the lane snapper Lutjanus synagris from limited catch length data from the landings of artisanal fishing catches recorded between 2006 and 2012 in Tayrona and Corales del Rosario y de San Bernardo National Parks, and the Vía Parque Isla de Salamanca, simple indicators and the decision tree methodology were applied. it was observed that this indicator mostly configured a selectivity pattern represented in capture of mayoritary immature specimens (<L mat ) and a spawning biomass level lower than the target reference point, affecting the natural renewal of L. synagris stocks. Also, it was ratified the degree of overfishing for growth and recruitment to which L. synagris is subjected. Reducing pressure...

Travers, Morgane.
Overfishing and climate change are now recognized to have important effects on marine ecosystem functioning but uncertainties remains about their combined effects. Using a modelling approach this thesis aims at assessing how the top-down effects of fishing and the bottom-up effects of climate combine themselves within the food web. A preliminary review highlighted the lack of end-to-end model applicable as it stands to our study case - the southern Benguela - and suitable to study the combined effects of fishing and climate. Coupling the plankton model ROMS-N2P2Z2D2 and the fish model OSMOSE appeared as an innovative method allowing to develop an appropriate tool meeting our objectives. The importance of two-way coupling via the predation process is first...

The Atlantic Bluefin Tuna: A global perspective ArchiMer
Fonteneau, Alain; Fromentin, Jean-marc.
This communication presents a global overview of Atlantic bluefin tuna biology, exploitation and management. The comparison between bluefin tuna and all other tuna species do show that this species is ranking number one among other tunas world wide in a wide range of its resources and fisheries characteristics. Bluefin tuna is for instance the gold winner in the category of fisheries (about 10,000 years of documented fisheries, the highest price in the market, the largest tuna taken), of its peculiar biology (large migration, homing, growth, etc.) and in the category of risks presently faced by the resource, because of its multiple scientific uncertainties still pending, its increasingly serious statistical problems and the heavy political context in the...

Latrouite, Daniel; Lazure, Pascal.
The study conducted in the framework of an agreement between Ifremer and the Local fisheries committee at Audierne is part of a project to restore spiny lobster Palinurus elephas stock levels in the Iroise Sea. It is supported by professional fishermen from Finistère and by the Regional fisheries committee of Brittany. After a brief review of the way lobster stocks are managed worldwide, followed by the major biological and ecological features of red lobster and the state of fisheries in Europe and North Africa, the very poor state of the resource along French coast is borne out by the statistics of landings. Various scenarios (not alternatives) to promote the rebuilding of the biomass are suggested: minimum landing size increase, seasonal closure of...

Assessment of sábalo (Prochilodus lineatus) fisheries in the lower Paraná River basin (Argentina) based on hydrological, biological, and fishery indicators Neotropical Ichthyology
Baigún,Claudio; Minotti,Priscilla; Oldani,Norberto.
This study assesses the change in fish exploitation patterns of the sábalo fisheries of the lower Paraná River basin based on hydrological, biological, and fishery indicators. From historical catch records, we recorded a shift from a lightly and moderate exploited status before 2001 to a heavily exploited one, as a result of the development of sábalo exports from 2001 onwards. Channel and floodplain connectivity indices demonstrated that the Paraná exhibited highly favorable hydrological conditions between 1972 and 1999 but more adverse conditions from 1999 to 2009, as a consequence of flood pulses reduction coincident with a fishing mortality increment. A total catch of 15,000 tons, including local consumption, regional market, informal sales, and...

Life-history characteristics of Pseudoplatystoma metaense (Teleostei: Siluriformes: Pimelodidae) from the northwestern Orinoco River Basin Neotropical Ichthyology
Pérez,Alfredo; Fabré,Nidia Noemí.
ABSTRACT The tiger shovelnose catfish (Pseudoplatystoma metaense) identified in literature prior to 2007 as P. tigrinum is the most important catfish species in the Orinoco River fishery, because of its abundance and high market price. The aim of this study was to obtain age, growth and population parameters of the of tiger shovelnose catfish. A total of 2,183 catfish, were sampled during 1996-2003 from the commercial fishery of the northwestern Orinoco River Basin in Venezuela, and were aged by examination of otoliths. Validation of otolith annuli was achieved with marginal increment analysis. Results suggest that, the opaque and translucent zones of otoliths were formed once per year. Length-weight relation and the von Bertalanffy growth model parameters...

Cordo, H.D..
Catch per unit of effort (CPUE)analysis of the Argentine surimi fleet is a routine work to estimate abundance indices of southern blue whiting Micromesistius australis. Several analysis of this fishery suggest that, as of the years when intensive fishing by foreign and national fleets started, the resource has suffered a marked decline. When calculating the CPUE it is common practice to take into acount only trips and fishing operations with high catches of the target species fishing operations directed to other species are not considered to avoid underestimations. Therefore, in order to include a percentage of catch of the analyzed species higher than a subjective value, available data are filtered. However, because only operations with high yield are...

Preliminary analysis of billfish catch rates in the Indian Ocean. OceanDocs
Campbell, R.A.; Tuck, G.N..
Due to the general lack of targeted fisheries on billfish, the resource status of these species within the Indian Ocean has not been analysed in any previous study and currently remains unknown. Nevertheless, significant quantities of billfish are caught annually in the Indian Ocean and, being generally long lived, these species remain vulnerable to overfishing. In this paper preliminary indices of stock availability are presented for the main billfish species based on the catch and effort data pertaining to the Japanese and Taiwanese Indian Ocean longline fisheries. While the indices need to be treated with some caution (due to problems relating to the accuracy of the catch and effort data, and the fact that changes in catchability have not been factored...

OceanDocs
Wöhler, O.C.; Giussi, A.R.; Hansen, J.E..
Sequential population analysis on Long Tail Hake (Macruronus magellanicus)from the Southwest Atlantic. Years 1985-1995. VPA on the Long Tail Hake (Macruronus magellanicus), based on data covering the years 1985 up to 1995, was performed to assess the current state of the stock. Simulation trials, inducing uncertainty about both the natural mortality rate and recruitment were also accomplished, to evaluate the risk of overfishing which is associated to different fishing alternatives, always under the assumption of a single and closed Long Tail Hake population. CPUE data were not appropriate for tunning, so the traditional VPA has been applied. During the period of study, stock biomass and spawning stock biomass showed an increased trend. Long and short-term...

Effects of subsidised distant water fleets on the marine environment and local people in Western Africa OceanDocs
Zeba, S..
These last years, while adressing marine conservation problems in Western Africa, 3 major issues were generally raised by our local partners: -Most of the distant water fleets fishing in the coastal waters of other countries do not often abide by the international standards of responsible fishing; -The number of distant water fleets is steadily increasing in the Exclusive Economic Areas of developing countries; -Theses fleets have tremendous ecological and economic consequences, which resulted in a crisis of fishery management. Yet it is thanks to fishing agreements that distant water fleets have legal access to the fish resources of developing coastal countries.More important: it is thanks to subsidies that the behaviours of distant water fleets have such...

Irusta, G.; Hernandez, D.R..
The status of hake (Merluccius hubbsi) resource south of 41°S in the Argentine Sea was evaluated with the Biomass Dynamic Model of Pella and Tomlinson. Results indicate that the population was overexploited and in a low biological production level (B99 BMSY1 because, as of 1998, catches always exceeded the surplus production corresponding to each year and the (MSY) Maximum Sustainable Yield. In 1993 increase of landings accelerated declination of biomass. For 1999 the MSY was estimated at 244,773 t and the replacement catch at 147,389 t. Landings corresponding to 1998 surpassed the MSY in 145,000 t and the replacement catch in 242,611 t.

OceanDocs
Bezzi, S.I..
Hake (Merluccius hubbsi) stock assessments and management recommendations made as of 1986 for the Argentine Sea, are summarized. The surplus production models used allowed to diagnose an overdimensioned fleet and to establish that, as of 1983, population densities were lower than the optimum values. In 1990 it was mentioned that total landings exceeded the Maximum Sustainable Yield and that the fishing effort was above the optimum exploitation level. The Virtual Population Analysis was first applied in 1993 and, for the 1986-1991 period, a 25. increase in fishing mortality, significant reductions of total and reproductive biomasses and a first catch length of 25 cm were detected. Besides, proposals were made to enhance accuracy of future assessments. In...

Bertolotti, M.I.; Pagani, A.N.; Hernandez, D.R.; Buono, J.J..
In order to increase knowledge about the ice chilling fleet and to explain the relationship between structural variables and yields, a simplified model was developed. The fleet was classified in three homogeneous strata. Stratum I includes the smallest ships, with a catch composition equal to that of the large coastal fishing vessels. The stratum yields decreased in 1997 and 1998. Strata II and III have common hake as the main target of catches. Yields of those strata showed a continuous decrease as of 1994/1995. Therefore, the species was replaced by other fish originally caught by other fleets. These two last strata are more vulnerable to overfishing of traditional coastal and demersal fisheries.

A Developing Country Puts A Halt To Foreign Overfishing OceanDocs
Nichols, P..
Foreign fishing fleets drastically overfished the waters off Namibia before that country gained independence in 1990, according to Paul Nichols, Special Adviser to the Namibian Ministry of Fisheries and Marine Resources. Since then, the Government has taken strong regulatory actions that have brought overfishing under control and allowed depleted fish stocks to rebuild while gaining strong support for the policy among Namibia's commercial fishers.

Litovsky, A..
