The pearl industry in French Polynesia is based on exploitation of natural stocks of the black-lip pearl oyster (Pinctada margaritifera); it generates an annual turnover of 90 million euros. Improvements in pearl quality need genetic studies to improve the populations. This pearl oyster is a protandric species, where the sex-ratio normally is biased towards males. There is an increasing interest in gender control to find the mechanisms to augment female proportions for management purposes. A histological examination of grafting success in pearl oyster Pinctada margaritifera in French Polynesia ArchiMer

Pearl oyster grafting is a complex surgical operation that should lead to pearl formation after approximately eighteen months. Although this technique has been used for many years in French Polynesia, the grafting process is still not standardised. While studies have been carried out in order to improve graft performance and yield, these remain highly variable due to post-grafting mortality, nucleus rejection and unreliable pearl quality, all of which constrain pearl farm profitability. Phenotype plasticity, local adaptation, and biofouling influence on growth of the pearl oyster Pinctada margaritifera: A common garden approach ArchiMer

The purpose of our study is to investigate (1) the influence of phenotype plasticity and local adaptation on pearl-oyster physiology by testing the persistence of growth differentiation of two pearl oyster populations (Arutua and Mangareva) in common garden experiment; (2) to quantify the influence of biofouling development on the growth of each pearl oyster population. Physiological responses of female and male black-lip pearl oysters (Pinctada margaritifera) to different temperatures and concentrations of food ArchiMer

This study was designed to measure responses of four-year-old black-lip pearl oysters (Pinctada margaritifera) to different temperatures and food concentrations and to identify the energy requirements of each sex. Oysters were fed a monospecific microalgal diet of Isochrysis affinis galbana (T-iso). Measurements of oxygen consumption and ingestion rates were carried out at 24 degrees C and 27 degrees C and at two algal (T-iso) concentrations: 5000 and 30 000 cell ml(-1). Size is the most important and valuable quality trait of cultured pearls produced by the black-lipped pearl oyster, Pinctada margaritifera. Effect of food conditioning on gonadic activity in the oyster Pinctada margaritifera ArchiMer

Preliminary experiments allowed defining basic requirements of Pinctada margaritifera for somatic and gonadic growth in controlled conditions. This study was continued by observation of the gametogenesis at a cellular level. In April/May 2008, 125 oysters were conditioned for 30 days in 25 tubular tanks (30 L). Genetic structure at different spatial scales in the pearl oyster (Pinctada margaritifera cumingii) in French Polynesian lagoons: beware of sampling strategy and genetic patchiness ArchiMer

In order to study further the genetic structure of the pearl oyster Pinctada margaritifera in French Polynesia with a special consideration for the sampling scale, we analyzed or re-analyzed sets of data based on nuclear DNA markers obtained at different spatial scales. At a large scale (several 1,000 km), the remote Marquesas Islands were confirmed to be significantly differentiated from Tuamotu-Gambier and Society archipelagos, with a marked difference however for the two main islands that are different from each other. A study of pearl oysters Pinctada margaritifera growth and mortality was done on a monthly basis between June 1990 and September 1991 in Takapoto atoll (Tuamotu archipelago). Meanwhile, sampling parameters representative of bivalves food showed a remarquable spatial stability whithin the lagoon. The amplitude of temporal variability varied in the order of some days. Carrying capacity appears low : energetic content of particulate material in waters is about 2 joules/liter, ten times lower than in temperate areas. On the opposite, seasonal effect is reduced and particulate food is always available. The shell biomineralisation with special reference to the nacreous region is observed during the development of the Polynesian pearl oyster. Ultrastructural changes were studied and timed for the first time from planktonic larval shells to two-year-old adult shells. During the first two weeks following fertilization, the prodissoconch-I shell structure is undifferentiated and uniformly granular. The prodissoconch-II stage which develops during the next two weeks acquires a columnar organization. Understanding the respective roles played by donor and recipient pearl oysters in pearl quality determination in relation to the environment is a challenge for the pearl industry. In most Pinctada species, pearl size is mainly related to recipient oyster growth performance, but also relies to some extent on the biomineralisation activity of the pearl sac, a tissue that originates from the donor oyster mantle. Growth and gonad development of the tropical black-lip pearl oyster, Pinctada margaritifera (L.), in the Gambier archipelago (French Polynesia) ArchiMer

The growth and reproductive cycle of cultured black-lipped pearl oysters, Pinctada margaritifera (L.), were studied in the Gambier Islands (134°52' W, 23°07' S) from September 2002 to August 2003. Temperatures were recorded throughout the year, revealing seasonal temperature variations between 22.3 °C and 27.8 °C. The mean annual chlorophyll a value, as computed from satellite data, was 0.188 ± 0.075 µg L-1.
