The defence against infections is the essential function of the immune system of all Vertebrates. Fish present an efficient and developed immunologic response and in the case of Teleosts, with some similarities to the higher vertebrates. It can be divided into two types: innate or non specific and adquired or specific, both with a humoral and cellular compartments. Their relative importance can change according to the age of fish and is always under the influence of different factors. The most relevant components are mentioned here. Effects of extracellular products from the pathogenic Vibrio aestuarianus strain 01/32 on lethality and cellular immune responses of the oyster Crassostrea gigas ArchiMer

Vibrio aestuarianus strain 01/32 was previously shown to be pathogenic to Crassostrea gigas juveniles. To investigate virulence mechanisms of this pathogen, we studied the toxicity to oysters of its extracellular products (ECPs). ECPs displayed lethality to animals, with a LD50 value of 3.3 mu g/g body weight. To determine the oyster cellular immune responses induced by these ECPs, we further examined in vitro their effects on C. gigas hemocytes, using flow cytometric-based hemocyte assays. Treatment of hemolymph with ECPs caused a significant inhibition of hemocyte phagocytosis and adhesive capabilities. In the Antarctic marine environment, the water temperature is usually between 2 and - 1.9 degrees C. Consequently, some Antarctic species have lost the capacity to adapt to sudden changes in temperature. The study of the immune response in Antarctic sea urchin (Sterechinus neumayeri) could help us understand the future impacts of global warming on endemic animals in the Antarctic Peninsula. Bivalve molluscs possess several types of hemolymph cells (hemocytes), involved in internal defense and other physiological functions. Studies in pathological and experimental conditions have shown their micro- and macrophagic ability. However, the mechanisms of intracellular digestion are incompletely known in these organisms. The lysosomal apparatus of hemocytes was therefore investigated in several species by hydrolase localization with the electron microscope. In the context of Pacific oyster C. gigas summer mortality, the present study demonstrated that the reproductive effort reduced not only the energetic parameters (carbohydrates and CEA) but also the immune parameters (concentration, phagocytosis and adhesive capacity of hemocytes). Increasing food supply from 4% to 12% (of oyster dry weight) did not counteract this phenomena as most of the additional energy was dedicated to the gametogenesis processes. Bonamia ostreae is the causative agent of hemocyte disease. It has been detected first during mortalities occured in Franc in 1979. Combination of a pesticide exposure and a bacterial challenge: In vivo effects on immune response of Pacific oyster, Crassostrea gigas (Thunberg) ArchiMer

To assess the impact of pollution induced by pesticides on Pacific oyster, Crassostrea gigas, health in France, in vivo effects of combined pesticide exposure and bacterial challenge on cell activities and gene expression in hemocytes were tested using flow cytometry and real-time PCR. The aim of this study was to test the effect of food quantity on energy storage and defense capacities of oysters during a reproductive cycle. One-year-old Crassostrea gigas oysters were fed two different dietary rations (4% and 12% of oyster dry weight in algal dry weight per day) in controlled experimental conditions over an annual cycle. Following the summer mortality outbreaks reported in France between 1998 and 2000, Vibrio harveyi strains were isolated from moribund abalones, allowing in vivo and in vitro studies on the interactions between abalone H. tuberculata and V. harveyi. Comparative Quantitative and Qualitative Attributes of the Surface Respiratory Macrophages in the Domestic Duck and the Rabbit International Journal of Morphology

In mammals, surface respiratory macrophages (SM) are known to play a foremost role in protecting the respiratory system by providing first line of defense through engulfing pathogens and particulate matter respired with air. It has been reported that the pulmonary cellular defense system of domestic birds is inadequate. In particular, low number of SM and even lack of the cells in a healthy avian respiratory system have been associated with susceptibility of domestic birds to respiratory diseases.
