The influence of diurnal variation in animal activity and digestion on animal heat production CIGR Journal
Pedersen, Soren.
Dimensioning of air conditioning plants for animal houses is traditionally based on steady-state conditions with constant animal heat and moisture production over a 24-hour cycle, despite the fact that the heat and moisture production varies diurnally. The heat production is normally highest in daytime and lowest during the night and therefore, there will be a discrepancy between the actual and the calculated indoor temperature and humidity, when using steady state models to control ventilation rate.  This article deals with the two main factors influencing on the diurnal heat production, namely the animal activity and the digestion of food. In experiments carried out over three years in respiration chambers at Research Centre Foulum, Denmark, the diurnal...

Heat and moisture production in growing-finishing pigs and broilers CIGR Journal
Aarnink-FBC, Andre.
Heat and moisture production are important parameters for designing ventilation and climate control systems in livestock housing. In 2002 a report was published of the CIGR Section II Working Group on Climatization of Animal Houses ‘Heat and moisture production at animal and house levels’ with formula to calculate heat and moisture production for different livestock categories. The objective of this paper is to discuss these CIGR formula for growing-finishing pigs and broilers. Results from calculated heat and moisture production with the relatively simple formula in the CIGR report were compared with results from a more comprehensive model. From this comparison the following conclusions were drawn: 1) The relatively simple CIGR formula to calculate total...

Neutral detergent fibre in piglet diets: digestibility, performance, and deposition of body nutrients Anais da ABC (AABC)
NEPOMUCENO,RAFAEL C.; WATANABE,PEDRO H.; FREITAS,EDNARDO R.; CARVALHO,LUIZ E. DE; OLIVEIRA,EMANUELA L. DE; GOMES,THALLES R.; AGUIAR,GERMANA C.; CANDIDO,RAYSSA S.; FERREIRA,JORDÂNIA L.; VEIRA,ALINI M..
ABSTRACT A total 120 piglets with an average live weight of 7.00 kg, weaned at 21 days, were used to evaluate the effect of neutral detergent fibre levels on the digestibility of nutrients and energy from the diets, productive performance, and the composition and rate of deposition of nutrients and energy in the bodies of piglets in the nursery phase. The animals were distributed according to a randomized-block design into five treatments, which consisted of neutral detergent fibre levels, with six replicates and four animals per plot. A quadratic effect was detected for the digestibility coefficients of nutrients and energy, feed intake and weight gain. The increase in fibre level promoted a linear increase in fat content in the carcass, blood, and body,...

Impact of birth weight and daily weight gain during suckling on the weight gain of weaning piglets Arq. Bras. Med. Vet. Zootec.
Surek,D.; Almeida,L.M.; Panisson,J.C.; Krabbe,E.L.; Oliveira,S.G.; Alberton,G.C.; Maiorka,A..
ABSTRACT This study evaluated the effect of birth weight and weight gain during the suckling phase on the piglet daily weight gain during the nursery phase (21-61 days of age). Piglets (n= 534) derived from 55 first-parity sows were weighed at birth, weaning, and end of the nursery phase. The data were analyzed according to a completely randomized experimental design, with three classes of birth weight (BW) and two classes of weight gain during the suckling phase (SDWG). High BW and low SDWG piglets were 0.2kg lighter at weaning than low BW and high SDWG animals (P< 0.05). However, at the end of the nursery phase, this situation was inverted, with high BW and low SDWG piglets 2.20kg heavier (P< 0.05). Low BW and high SDWG piglets were heavier at...

Biteli,E.G.F.; Nunes,N.; Lopes,P.C.F.; Silva,P.E.S.; Ido,C.K.; Silva,H.R.A.; Horr,M.; Carneiro,R.L.; Bompadre,T.F.V..
ABSTRACT The effects of different concentrations of oxygen and nitrous oxide on blood gas parameters in pigs maintained under spontaneous or pressure-controlled ventilation, with or without positive end-expiratory pressure (PEEP), were compared. Forty-eight pigs were randomly divided into six groups, submitted to different concentrations of compressed air or N2O, associated with different fractions of inspired oxygen (FiO2). The group subject to 30% of compressed air (GA30) showed the closest proximity to the physiological range of partial pressure (PaO2) expected for the species. For oxygen saturation (SaO2), the values obtained were below the lower physiological limit in the group administered 30% N2O (GN30). Use of PEEP positively interfered in PaCO2...

Chromosome comparison between populations of the collared peccary, Tayassu tajacu, raised in captivity Biocell
Carvalho de Souza,Patrícia; Salim Khayat,André; Chamon Seligmann,Igor; Rodríguez Burbano,Rommel Mario.
The collared peccary (Tayassu tajacu) is widely distributed over the American continent, being found from the south of the USA to the north of Argentina. In Brazil, it is spread all over the country, being one of the potential species to be raised in captivity. Therefore, the cytogenetic techniques could be a potential tool for reproductive monitoring of animals raised in captivity, mainly when destined for commercial purposes. This study had the objective of determining the chromosome number of two populations raised in captivity and characterizing them by GTG banding. For this purpose, an analysis was made of mitotic metaphases obtained from lymphocyte cultures made from blood samples of 11 animals, six of which from the Northeast and five from the North...

Neutral detergent fibre in piglet diets: performance and gastrointestinal implications Ciência e Agrotecnologia
Nepomuceno,Rafael Carlos; Watanabe,Pedro Henrique; Freitas,Ednardo Rodrigues; Carvalho,Luiz Euquerio de; Oliveira,Emanuela Lima de; Veira,Alini Mari.
ABSTRACT The intestinal health of piglets depends on the balance between diet, microflora and mucosal integrity. Disruption of this balance can compromise the digestive functions, leading to diarrhoeal frame and decline in performance of piglets. However, the level and type of fibre can limit digestive disorders. Thirty newly weaned piglets were used to evaluate the levels of neutral detergent fibre (NDF) in diets regarding performance, pH, viscosity and concentration of short chain fatty acids of digestive contents, gastrointestinal transit time, morphology of the intestinal mucosa, weights of organs and occurrence of diarrhoea. NDF level had quadratic effect on weight gain and feed conversion ratio of piglets, estimating best results at the level of...

Botulism in non-ruminants in Brazil Ciência Rural
Oliveira Júnior,Carlos Augusto de; Silva,Rodrigo Otávio Silveira; Olinda,Roberio Gomes; Lobato,Francisco Carlos Faria.
ABSTRACT: Botulism is an intoxication caused by the ingestion of neurotoxins secreted by Clostridium botulinum and characterized by progressive flaccid symmetrical paralysis. Among non-ruminant animals, avian species and dogs are the most commonly affected by botulism, while horses and pigs are less-commonly diagnosed with the disease. Despite the importance of this disease in animals, the Brazilian literature only includes case studies and outbreak descriptions. The aim of this study was to review the main features and to provide recent data on the occurrence of botulism in non-ruminants in Brazil.

ALLOMETRIC GROWTH OF PRIMAL CUTS AND TISSUES IN THE PIG Ciência Rural
Siewerdt,Frank; Farias,José Viriato da Silva; Osório,José Carlos da Silveira; Jacondino,Ilo Francisco Ribeiro.
Data from 82 purebred and crossbred Large White and Duroc barrows and gilts were used to describe the growth of carcass primal cuts, of tissues, and of several organs. Pigs were allowed ad libitum to a conventional diet, which contained com and soybean meal. Pigs were weighted weekly and were slaughtered when attained a liveweight over 90kg. An allometric pattern of growth was assumed. Within the observed range of liveweight, the carcass grew slower than the whole animal. An increase of carcass weight corresponds to a similar increase of lean, but also corresponds to a larger increase of fat tissues. A suggestion to slaughter pigs near to 90kg of liveweight is presented, in order to obtain leaner carcasses.
