Antioxidant capacity in relationship to serum lipid peroxides levels in healthy elderly of Mexico City ABCL
Sánchez-Rodríguez,Martha A.; Retana-Ugalde,Raquel; Ruiz-Ramos,Mirna; Mendoza-Núñez,Víctor Manuel.
The aging is one of the factors that cause decrease in the antioxidant capacity. Likewise, it has been proposed that subjects exposed permanently to air pollution develop deficient antioxidant capacity to oxidative stress (OxS). This study aimed to analyze the antioxidant capacity against elevated lipid peroxides in healthy elderly of Mexico City. 105 adults (44 ± 10.8 years) and 126 elderly subjects were studied (68 ± 7.1 years); residents of Mexico City (clinically healthy, non-smokers, non-vitamin supplement takers) who had lived in the city for >10 years. Plasma lipoperoxides (LPO), total antioxidant status (TAS), the activity of red blood cells superoxide dismutase (SOD), and plasma glutathione peroxidase (GPx), were studied in all subjects. LPO...

Cassanego,Mara Betânia Brizola; Goldoni,Angélica; Heldt,Fágner Henrique; Osório,Daniela Montanari Migliavacca; Windisch,Paulo Günter; Droste,Annette.
Regnellidium diphyllum Lindm. is a heterosporous fern growing in wetlands and humid soils that are being converted to agricultural activities. Many products that are used in agriculture contain copper, resulting in surface and groundwater contamination. Germination and initial development tests were performed using Meyer's solution containing copper sulphate at concentrations of 0 (control), 1, 5, 10, 50 and 100 mg L-1. The experiment was conducted in a growth chamber at 25 ± 1ºC for 28 days, with a 12/12-hour light/dark cycle and a photon flux density of 100 µmol m-2 s-1. The lowest germination rate (6%) was observed at 100 mg L-1. Primary root growth was significantly reduced at > 10 mg L-1. Secondary leaves of sporophytes grown in concentrations >...

Conservation Units (CU) aim to contribute to the balance between human and environmental demand, by protecting natural resources and biological communities. In this study we examined the differences in the attributes of the fish community in four stretches of an urban stream, two inside and two outside the CU, without vegetation cover, and tested the hypothesis that the presence of riparian vegetation is positively reflected in the attributes of fish fauna. Five species were caught, distributed into four orders and five families. Attributes like richness, abundance, dominance, Shannon-Wiener diversity, and evenness were estimated and significant differences were detected for continuous stretches considering stream flow direction. The first stretches (URBI...

Impact assessment of an effluent discharge on benthic macroinvertebrates in a subtropical river using indexes Biological Sciences
Hartmann, Sharonn Martins Gonçalves; Rozário, Hérica; Affonso, Ana Lucia Suriani.
Benthic macroinvertebrates are used as environmental bioindicators in the assessment of water quality in rivers and lakes, due to the sensitivity of some taxa to pollution. The objective of this research was to evaluate the consequences of industrial effluent discharge on the structure of the benthic community present in a river in the subtropical region of Brazil. The organisms were collected at three points of the Coutinho River, in 2013 (September and November) and 2014 (January and March). To characterize the community were calculated density, Shannon diversity index (H´), Pielou equitability (J), taxa richness, Biotic Indices (Biological Monitoring Working Party - BMWP, Average Score Per Taxon - BMWP-ASPT, Family Biotic Index – FBI) and Canonical...

Characterization of brewery waste water and evaluation of its potential for biogas production CIGR Journal
Murunga, Sylvia Injete; Mbuge, Duncan Onyango; Gitau, Ayub Njoroge; Mutwiwa, Urbanus Ndungwa; Wekesa, Ingrid Namae.
The issue of global warming and climate change is strongly receiving public attention and has become a major environmental concern both nationally and internationally. Brewing industries are among the largest consumers of water and the largest source of organic effluent mostly from the brewing, cleaning, and cooling processes which must be treated to allowable levels to reduce environmental pollution. Close to 10 L water is used for every 1 L beer that is brewed, though the amount of water in the final beer is small. A study was undertaken to characterize and assess the variations in the quality of untreated brewery waste water. Samples from different process streams including brewing line, clean in place line and mixing line from two brewing industries in...

Mercury in the sea turtle Chelonia mydas (Linnaeus, 1958) from Ceará coast, NE Brazil Anais da ABC (AABC)
Bezerra,Moisés F.; Lacerda,Luiz D.; Costa,Breno G.B.; Lima,Eduardo H.S.M..
Mercury concentrations in carapace fragments of the green turtle Chelonia mydas from the Ceará coast in NE Brazil are reported. Concentrations varied from <0.34 to 856.6 ng.g -1 d.w., and were highest (average of 154.8 ng.g -1 d.w.) in juveniles (n = 22), whereas lowest concentrations (average of 2.5 ng.g -1 d.w.) were observed in adult/sub-adult animals (n = 3). There was a significant negative correlation between animal size and Hg concentration probably due to different diets between juveniles and sub-adults/adults. Carapace fragments, which are non-invasive, non-lethal substrates, may be of importance for monitoring purposes of these generally endangered species.

Diagnostic and prognostic characteristics of phytotoxicity caused by fluoride on Spondias dulcis Forst. F. (Anacardiaceae) Anais da ABC (AABC)
Sant'Anna-Santos,Bruno F.; Azevedo,Aristéa A.; Silva,Luzimar C.; Oliva,Marco A..
The goal of this study was to determine the symptoms and microscopic damage caused by fluoride on Spondias dulcis, a fluoride-sensitive species. The plants were exposed to simulated fog with fluoride (0, 5, 10, 15 and 20 mg L-1) for 20 min daily during four consecutive days. Samples from leaflets without any apparent fluoride injury were collected to microscopic analysis. The percentage of necrosed leaf area was measured, and the level of pollutant in the dry matter from the basal and apical portions of the plant was determined. The necroses began 24 h after the first simulation mainly from the base of the leaflets. A higher level of necrosis was observed at the apical portion of the plants, a region of higher fluoride accumulation. The damage on the...

Benthic foraminifera distribution in high polluted sediments from Niterói Harbor (Guanabara Bay), Rio de Janeiro, Brazil Anais da ABC (AABC)
Vilela,Claudia G.; Batista,Daniele S.; Batista-Neto,José A.; Crapez,Mirian; Mcallister,John J..
Dockyards and harbors are recognized as being important locations where sediment-associated pollutants can accumulate, which constitutes an environmental risk to aquatic life due to potential uptake and accumulation of heavy metals in the biota. The aim of this paper is to assess the concentrations and the effects of some heavy metals in the benthic foraminifera assemblage in Niterói Harbor. Low concentrations in the benthic foraminifera as well as the dominance of indicative species such as Ammonia tepida, Buliminella elegantissima and Bolivina lowmani can be associated with an environment under stress. In addition, the occurrence of test abnormalities among foraminifera may represent a useful biomarker for evaluating long-term environmental impacts in a...

The Dynamic of some Biochemical Indicators at Species of Medicinal Plants from Areas of Suceava County, Romania, Emerged under the Mining Pollution Influence BABT
Todirascu-Ciornea,Elena; Dumitru,Gabriela.
ABSTRACT It is known the fact that the mining causes huge damages on the environment having negative biologic effects extremely severe on some groups of organisms of the food chain. The pollutants causes major damages at the level of leaves' cuticles, the vegetation reacting through irreversible modifications at the tissue's level and at substances and energy metabolism, like a riposte to the apparition of the stress induced by the ROS, stress that creates real disturbances on physiological and biochemical processes. Considering the fact that, on the one hand, the activity of oxidoreductases is strongly influenced by the presence of the pollutants factors, with direct effect on the oxidative's stress production, and on the other hand that the plants react...

Alterations on growth and gill morphology of Danio rerio (Pisces, Ciprinidae) exposed to the toxic sediments BABT
Fracácio,Renata; Verani,Nelsy Fenerich; Espíndola,Evaldo Luiz Gaeta; Rocha,Odete; Rigolin-Sá,Odila; Andrade,Cássio Arilson.
The objective of this work was to assess the toxicity of sediment samples from six cascade reservoirs in Tietê river system, in São Paulo State, Brazil, through chronic-partial toxicity bioassays with Danio rerio larvae as test-organisms. Histology of gills and biometric measurements were used to determine the existence of toxicity problems. The alterations on gill morphology here detected were considered of first stage (hyperplasia, lamellar junction and excess of mucous cells) in the first reservoirs and very slight in the last ones. The biometric analysis pointed to inadequate conditions for the growth of the test-organisms when exposed to the sediment of the rivers and upstream reservoirs and also indicated an improvement of environmental conditions...

The lysosomal stability as a biomarker for the determination of pollution in aquatic environments BABT
Nazar,Maria Loreto; Rodrigues,Luiz Erlon Araujo; Nascimento,Iracema.
This work studied the effects caused by five different formulae of gasoline on the stability of the lysosomes isolated from the liver of the tilapia fish (Oreochromis niloticus). The functional integrity of the lysosomal membranes was evaluated via the acid phosphatase activity. The results showed that there were significant changes in the stability of the lysosomes exposed to the presence of the hydrocarbons in the environment. Therefore, considering the method's simplicity, the sensitivity of the responses and its low cost the assessment of the lysosomal activity could be an important tool for the study of the effects of pollution in the aquatic environments.

Distribution and abundance of Chironomidae (Diptera, Insecta) in an impacted watershed in South-east Brazil BJB
MARQUES,M. M. G. S. M.; BARBOSA,F. A. R.; CALLISTO,M..
Patterns of abundance and distribution of chironomid midges (Diptera, Chironomidae) in the middle Rio Doce basin were analysed. Human activities (mining, steel processing, and Eucalyptus spp. forestry) contribute to environmental degradation and low water quality in this watershed. Physical and chemical water traits (dissolved oxygen, pH, total alkalinity, electric conductivity, phosphorus and nitrogen concentrations) of 20 sampling points were used in a Principal Component Analysis (PCA) to establish the best and worst water quality. Sampling points recorded as the most polluted showed low genus richness of Chironomidae, less than five genera from the total 23, and dominance of the genus Chironomus, a bioindicator of environmental stress. The ichthyofauna of the marginal lagoons of the Sorocaba River, SP, Brazil: composition, abundance and effect of the anthropogenic actions BJB
SMITH,W. S.; BARRELLA,W..
The marginal lagoons of the Sorocaba River fulfil important functions in their lotic ecosystems and for its fish communities, providing shelter, food, and area for fish early stages of development. The lagoons are also an escape from the river pollution since the physical-chemical characteristics of their water are more stable than the river water. Nevertheless, these lagoons are under a series of impacts that contribute to reduce their diversity and stability such as water pollution, deforesting and river dumping. These impacts decrease habitat availability, and modify the fish community structure by reducing the number of species in the Sorocaba River, the floodplains and its marginal lagoons.
