Population Dynamics Modeling of Arapaima gigas Acta Amazonica
Coutinho,Eliane dos Santos de Souza; Bevilacqua,Luiz; Queiroz,Helder Lima de.
Pirarucu (Arapaima gigas) has been of the most important natural fishing resources of the Amazon region. Due to its economic importance, and the necessity to preserve the species hand, field research concerning the habits and behavior of the pirarucu has been increasing for the last 20 years. The aim of this paper is to present a mathematical model for the pirarucu population dynamics considering the species peculiarities, particularly the male parental care over the offspring. The solution of the dynamical systems indicates three possible equilibrium points for the population. The first corresponds to extinction; the third corresponds to a stable population close to the environmental carrying capacity. The second corresponds to an unstable equilibrium...

Is size structure a good measure of future trends of plant populations? an empirical approach using five woody species from the Cerrado (Brazilian savanna) Acta Botanica
Virillo,Carolina Bernucci; Martins,Fernando Roberto; Tamashiro,Jorge Yoshio; Santos,Flavio Antonio Maës dos.
Size distributions in woody plant populations have been used to assess their regeneration status, assuming that size structures with "reverse-J" shapes represent stable populations. We present an empirical approach of this issue using five woody species from the Cerrado. Considering count data for all plants of these five species over a 12-year period, we analyzed size distribution by: a) plotting frequency distributions and their adjustment to the negative exponential curve and b) calculating the Gini coefficient. To look for a relationship between size structure and future trends, we considered the size structures from the first census year. We analyzed changes in number over time and performed a simple population viability analysis, which gives the mean...

Life History Parameters of Genypterus brasiliensis (Teleostei: Ophidiidae), an Endemic Fisheries Resource of the Southwestern Atlantic Anais da ABC (AABC)
TOMÁS,ACÁCIO R.G.; ELEUTERIO,CELSO L.T.; VELASCO,GONZALO.
Abstract: Genypterus brasiliensis, a demersal fish of large size (1.3 m of total length), occurs in the southwest Atlantic (23 to 38oS) and well appreciated due to the quality of its flesh. It was analyzed through longline and trawl fisheries, and the average length and weight of 724 specimens were significantly different between them, with the biggest and heaviest specimens caught by the former. The weight-length relationships were significantly different based upon sex: females Wt=4x10-7Lt3.3799; r2=0.97; n=262; p<0.001, and males: Wt=4x10-7Lt3.3886; r2=0.95; n=190; p<0.001. Using the otoliths readings for 153 specimens (APE of 2% and CV of 4.2%), the growth parameters estimates reveal statistical differences between sexes (p=0.05; r2=0.889). The...

A new analytical formulation of retention effects on particle diffusion processes Anais da ABC (AABC)
Bevilacqua,Luiz; Galeão,Augusto C.N.R.; Costa,Flavio P..
The ultimate purpose of this paper is to present a new analytical formulation to simulate diffusion with retention in a reactive medium under stable thermodynamic conditions. The analysis of diffusion with retention in a continuum medium is developed after the solution of an equivalent problem using a discrete approach. The new law may be interpreted as the reduction of all diffusion processes with retention to a unifying phenomenon that can adequately simulate the retention effect namely a circulatory motion. It is remarkable that the governing equation requires a fourth order differential term as suggested by the discrete approach. The relative fraction of diffusion particles β is introduced as a control parameter in the diffusion-retention law as...

Flutuação populacional de tripes, Thrips tabaci Lind., em cebola em Ituporanga, Santa Catarina Anais da SEB
Gonçalves,Paulo A. S..
The population dynamics of Thrips tabaci Lind. was evaluated for onion (Allium cepa) planted in July, August and September at the Ituporanga Experimental Station, EPAGRI S.A., Santa Catarina State, Brazil, from 1985 to 1988. For each planting date cv. Baia Periforme, Jubileu, EMPASC 351 Sel. Crioula and Norte 14 were used. Severe infestation in all cultivars was observed after mid-October. The population peak of T. tabaci occurred between the end of October and mid-November. Cultivars transplanted early tended to escape from high population densities. Populations of T. tabaci peaked during bulb formation and decreased thereafter.

Weather, cultivar and density-dependent processes influence on aphid in alfalfa Bragantia
Silva,Alexandre de Almeida e; Varanda,Elenice Mouro; Rassini,Joaquim Bartolomeu.
It is important to understand the effects of weather, insect density and plant cultivar on insect abundance to predict and prevent crop production loss. The present work investigated the influence of such factors on aphid in alfalfa during one year (short term). Data was collected from September/1997 to August/1998 at Canchin Farm (CCPSE-EMBRAPA), São Carlos, State of São Paulo, Brazil. Weather conditions had, in general, little effect on the variation of aphid populations, but Therioaphis maculata abundance was negatively correlated to humidity. Moreover, high maximum temperatures and low levels of rainfall possible favored T. maculata high abundance on Crioula and P3 cultivars. Therefore, appropriate management of this species is required during hot and...

Population dynamics of Musca domestica (Diptera: Muscidae): experimental and theoretical studies at different temperatures BABT
Tardelli,Carina Aparecida; Godoy,Wesley Augusto Conde; Mancera,Paulo Fernando Arruda.
In the present study, the population dynamics of M. domestica was evaluated at two different temperatures, 20 and 30ºC. The dynamics was modeled using a density-dependent model of population growth. The temperatures investigated in this study produced no qualitative change in terms of dynamic behaviour, i. e. the population dynamics of M. domestica was characterized by a stable equilibrium at both temperatures. However, the steady state was influenced by the results obtained at different temperatures. The difference between the eigenvalues obtained at the two temperatures was probably the cause of the difference between the distinct steady states. The implications of these results for the population dynamics of M. domestica are discussed.

ALMEIDA,J. R. de; OLIVEIRA,S. G. de; BORGES,I. L.; D'ALMEIDA,J. M..
The isothermal deterministic model adherence was studied to evaluate the population dinamic of Synthesiomyia nudiseta (Diptera, Muscidae). The linear form of equation obtained for the experiments in the several phases, were for Egg: 1/D = -0.18 + 0.02 . T; Larva: 1/D = -0.028 + 0.01. T; Pupa: 1/D = -0.069 + 0.01 . T; and Adult: 1/D = -0.4178 + 0.02 . T. In function of temperature, S. nudiseta can present from 4.18 to 8.95 and from 4.91 to 8.99 generations per year, when calculated through the equations of development and through the simulations, respectively. And the higher the temperature the larger the generation number. Through variance analysis it was verified the significance for the regression equations in relation to the annual generation number...

Population dynamics and net primary production of the aquatic macrophite Nymphaea rudgeana C. F. Mey in a lotic environment of the Itanhaém River basin (SP, Brazil) BJB
CAMARGO,A. F. M.; FLORENTINO,E. R..
In this paper we evaluated the population dynamics and obtained estimates of the net primary production of the aquatic macrophyte Nymphaea rudgeana in an arm of the Itanhaém River (São Paulo State, Brazil). This species presents, in the studied area, a broad seasonal variation of biomass. As from November (13.1 g DW/m²) we observed a gradual increase of biomass that reached a maximum in February (163.1 g DW/m²). Then, the biomass decreased, maintaining low levels until a new growth period. The reduction of biomass is associated to the development of floating aquatic macrophytes (Pistia stratiotes and Salvinia molesta) and, subsequently to environmental factors (higher salinity values) that are unfavorable to their development. The net primary production of...

Identification of tiller age categories based on morphogenetic responses of continuously stocked marandu palisade grass fertilised with nitrogen Ciência Rural
Paiva,Adenilson José; Pereira,Lilian Elgalise Techio; Silva,Sila Carneiro da; Dias,Raphael Antonio Prado.
Nitrogen fertilization augments tiller appearance and death, modifying the age profile of tiller population. Tillers from different age categories present distinct responses to environmental factors and management practices characterized by variation in their morphogenetic responses, which interfere in the dynamics of the herbage accumulation process. In that context, rates of leaf appearance and elongation and leaf lifespan were used as indicators to identify tiller age categories of continuously stocked marandu palisade grass managed at 30cm and subjected to nitrogen fertilization regimes using cluster analysis. Analysis was based on the average distance method using combined means of the response-variables studied, and the results used to build a...

A preliminary analysis of death cause, capture-related mortality, and survival of adult red deer in northwestern Patagonia Ecología austral
Flueck,Werner T; Smith-Flueck,Joanne M; Bonino,Never A.
The red deer (Cervus elaphus), among the world´s 14 most invasive exotic mammals, has recently arrived in Patagonia. Forty-seven deer were captured, marked with radio collars, and monitored in order to determine survival rates and identify causes of death. Net gunning from a helicopter allowed captures to be evenly distributed through the study area and in a timely manner. The absence of capture related mortality in our study agrees with previously reported low rates for this method. Animals were monitored for periods ranging from 5 to 2611 days. Ten animals provided censored values due to radio failures or being shot: they survived on average 811 days (SE = 221) after capture. Ten animals experienced natural deaths with an average time alive after capture...

Introduced herbivores and the Allee effect in animal-pollinated plants Ecología austral
Vázquez,Diego P.
Interspecific interactions can be modulated by the community context in which they occur. In this paper I focus on plant-pollinator interactions and their modulation by introduced herbivores through changes in plant population density. I first develop a mathematical model that relates the population density of an animal-pollinated plant species with pollinator visitation frequency, pollination, reproduction and per capita growth rate. This model allows me to investigate how several pollination-related parameters -including relative abundance of the focal plant species, pollinator specialization, pollination quantity and quality and pollen limitation of reproduction- influence the relationship between per capita growth rate and population density. I then...

Grasshopper Population Ecology: Catastrophe, Criticality, and Critique Ecology and Society
Lockwood, Dale R; Colorado State University; dale.lockwood@colostate.edu; Lockwood, Jeffrey A; University of Wyoming;.
Grasshopper population dynamics are an important part of the North American rangeland ecosystem and an important factor in the economies that derive from the rangeland. Outbreak dynamics have plagued management strategies in the rangeland, and attempts to find simple, linear and mechanistic solutions to both understanding and predicting the dynamics have proved fruitless. These efforts to ground theory in a correspondence with the “real” world, including whether the population dynamics are ultimately density dependent or density independent, have generated abundant heat but little light. We suggest that a pragmatic approach, in which theories are taken to be “tools” rather than competing claims of truth, has greater...

Multiactor Modeling of Settling Decisions and Behavior in the San Mariano Watershed, the Philippines: a First Application with the MameLuke Framework Ecology and Society

Land-use system dynamics and demographic dynamics are tightly coupled. In environmental science and studies of changes in land use and land cover, an unequivocal relationship is sometimes found between both systems, especially in coarse-scale studies. To obtain a better understanding of these intermingling dynamics, we formulated an agent-based model, the MameLuke settlement model, that used a deductive approach to investigate these relationships. The model was constructed based on ethnographic histories of farm households in San Mariano, the Philippines. The model was calibrated visually. Although this calibration approach proved to be very inefficient, the model itself still outperformed a random model. The model formulation process and the model...
