Assigning dates and identifying areas affected by fires in Portugal based on MODIS data 42
PANISSET,JESSICA; DACAMARA,CARLOS C.; LIBONATI,RENATA; PERES,LEONARDO F.; CALADO,TERESA J.; BARROS,ANA.
ABSTRACT An automated procedure is here presented that allows identifying and dating burned areas in Portugal using values of daily reflectance from near-infrared and middle-infrared bands, as obtained from the MODIS instrument. The algorithm detects persistent changes in monthly composites of the so-called (V,W) Burn-Sensitive Index and the day of maximum change in daily time series of W is in turn identified as the day of the burning event. The procedure is tested for 2005, the second worst fire season ever recorded in Portugal. Comparison between the obtained burned area map and the reference derived from Landsat imagery resulted in a Proportion Correct of 95.6%. Despite being applied only to the months of August and September, the algorithm is able to...

Situação epidemiológica da leucose bovina enzoótica em Portugal entre os anos de 1995 e 2005 45
Poeta,P.; Coelho,A.C.; Rodrigues,J..
This paper evaluated the epidemiological situation of the enzootic bovine leucosis from 1995 to 2005, in Portugal. With exception of the South region, Algarve, the disease was distributed throughout the country, being more prevalent in the north, between Douro and Minho and Trás-os-Montes, than in the centre. A decrease in prevalence and incidence of the infection throughout the studied period was also observed.

Occurrence of Listeria monocytogenes in silages assessed by fluorescent in situ hybridization 45
Oliveira,M.; Guerra,M.; Bernardo,F..

Patterns of avian malaria in tropical and temperate environments: testing the "The enemy release hypothesis" 49
Antonini,Yasmine; Lobato,Debora Nogueira Campos; Norte,Ana Cláudia; Ramos,Jaime A.; Moreira,Patrícia de Abreu; Braga,Erika Martins.
Abstract: According to the enemy release hypothesis (ERH) the spread of invasive species will be facilitated by release from their enemies as they occupy new areas. However, the ERH has rarely been tested by comparing populations of native (non-invasive, long established) species with expanding or shifting ranges, to the same species as invasive in another area. We tested the ERH with respect to blood parasite levels (prevalence and intensity of Plasmodium spp. and Haemoproteus spp.) of (a) two closely related, widely distributed species of thrush (Turdus leucomelas and T. merula), and (b) an invasive sparrow (Passer domesticus) whose range has expanded from the Old World to the New World since the 18th century. A total of 158 birds were sampled in...

Molecular characterization of vanA-containing Enterococcus from migratory birds: song thrush (Turdus philomelos) 58
Silva,Nuno; Igrejas,Gilberto; Felgar,Ana; Gonçalves,Alexandre; Pacheco,Rui; Poeta,Patrícia.
Vancomycin-resistant enterococci (VRE) were detected in two faecal samples (1.3%) of song thrush in Portugal. vanA isolates showed high level vancomycin/teicoplanin resistance, as well as resistance to ciprofloxacin, quinupristin-dalfopristin and cloranfenicol. Thrush can be a reservoir of VRE and transmit these resistant bacteria to other animals including humans.

Cross-cultural adaptation of Hypertension Knowledge Test into European Portuguese 60
Cabral,Ana C.; Moura-Ramos,Mariana; Castel-Branco,Margarida; Caramona,Margarida; Fernandez-Llimos,Fernando; Figueiredo,Isabel V..
ABSTRACT We aim to validate a European-Portuguese version of the Hypertension Knowledge Test (HKT) questionnaire and examine its factorial structure with a confirmatory factor analysis (CFA). A process of translation and back-translation was performed. A cross-sectional study was developed in which all adult patients taking at least one antihypertensive drug were invited to participate. Data on personal and family history were collected, and the HKT, Strelec, and the Batalla questionnaires were administered. We enrolled 304 patients with a mean age of 68.12±10.83 years. The mean score of HKT was 15.33±2.79. CFA indicated that the construct being tested was unidimensional, and Cronbach’s alpha (α=0.65) showed that the instrument had an acceptable internal...

Human–Nature Relationship in Mediterranean Streams: Integrating Different Types of Knowledge to Improve Water Management 7
Clemente, Adelaide; Environmental Biology Centre, Faculty of Sciences, University of Lisbon; maclemente@fc.ul.pt; Nielsen, Kurt Aagaard; Department of Environmental, Social and Spatial Change, University of Roskilde; aagaard@ruc.dk; Branquinho, Cristina; Environmental Biology Centre, Faculty of Sciences, University of Lisbon; cmbranquinho@fc.ul.pt.
The social and ecological systems of Mediterranean streams are intrinsically linked as a result of long human occupation. In this region, these links vary greatly across small distances due to geomorphology, resulting in great diversity across space, which poses particular challenges for understanding and managing these systems. This demands (i) interdisciplinary integration of knowledge that focuses on the social–ecological interactions, while according due consideration to the whole; and also (ii) transdisciplinary integration, integrating lay and expert knowledge to understand local specificities. To address these needs—a focus on interactions and local knowledge—the research presented here studies the...

Climate change may be a game-changer for scientific research by promoting a science that is grounded in linking the production of knowledge and societal action in a transition toward more sustainable development pathways. Here, we discuss participatory action-research (PAR) as a way of thinking and leading investigations that may promote incremental and transformative changes in the context of climate change adaptation research. Our exploration is addressed in the Portuguese context, where PAR and sustainable transition studies are still marginal, and adaptation processes are a recent topic on political agendas. We describe the characteristics of PAR and use two studies of adaptation to illustrate how research and practice co-evolve through interactive...

Oak Persistence in Mediterranean Landscapes: The Combined Role of Management, Topography, and Wildfires 7
Holmgren, Milena; Resource Ecology Group, Wageningen University; milena.holmgren@wur.nl; Mohren, Godefridus M.J.; Forest Ecology and Forest Management Group, Wageningen University; frits.mohren@wur.nl.
Mediterranean ecosystems have been shaped by a history of human and ecological disturbances. Understanding the dynamics of these social-ecological systems requires an understanding of how human and ecological factors interact. In this study, we assess the combined role of management practices and biophysical variables, i.e., wildfire and topography, to explain patterns of tree persistence in a cork oak (Quercus suber L.) landscape of southern Portugal. We used face-to-face interviews with landowners to identify the management practices and the incentives that motivated them. We used aerial photographs and a Geographic Information System (GIS) to classify vegetation patch-type transitions over a period of 45 years (1958-2002) and logistic regression to...

Speciation in Cyprinidae of the Iberic Peninsula. 5
Almaca, Carlos.
Coming from Oriental Asia and Siberia, the Cyprinidae reached the Iberic Peninsula probably at the end of the Oligocene. Their populations bore speciation processes which led to the formation of a fauna rich in endemic species and subspecies. Populations of two of the genera Barbus and Pseudophoxinus reached Northwestern African forming there several endemic species. Concerning the speciation forms, it is probable that the allopatric form, whether by foundation effect or by subdivision, played an important part. Pyrenees and Mediterranean Sea settled probably efficient barriers for the Iberic Cyprinidae isolation. The present geographical repartition of Cyprinidae in Iberic Peninsula suggests that altitude lines and glaciations which reached the north of...

Water column and recent sediment data on diatoms and coccolithophorids, off Portugal, confirm sediment record of upwelling events 5
Abrantes, F; Moita, Mt.
Diatom and coccolithophorid abundance and diatom assemblage composition found in the water column along the Portuguese margin, during upwelling and non-upwelling conditions, are compared to the distribution patterns observed in the recent sediments from the same area. The water column results indicate a one order of magnitude increase in phytoplankton biomass during upwelling conditions (summer), with diatoms being the most important contributors. Coccolithophorids, on the contrary, dominate the phytoplankton in winter (non-upwelling), The comparison of the upwelling and non-upwelling spatial distribution of these phytoplankton groups to their sedimentary record reveals the sediment record as a reflection of the upwelling situation, preserving most of its...

Supply and larval traits at metamorphosis of a coastal marine invertebrate with a bi-phasic life cycle under contrasting oceanographic conditions 5
Rey, Felisa; Silva Neto, Gina M.; Bueno-pardo, Juan; Bispo, Regina; Calado, Ricardo.
Patterns of larval supply and larval condition at metamorphosis play key roles in the structure and dynamics of marine populations. Hence, biological and environmental conditions driving the dispersion of larval individuals, shape early life phenotypes, and influence their survival and post-settlement success. We performed a study over two consecutive years at Ria de Aveiro (Portugal), a coastal lagoon influenced by upwelling regimens in the North-eastern Atlantic. This study assessed the effect of contrasting oceanographic conditions on larval supply and larval traits at metamorphosis of the green crab Carcinus maenas. Crab megalopae were daily sampled and monitored in the laboratory until metamorphosis. Environmental conditions experienced by larvae in...

Field measurements of coastal waves and currents in Portugal and Greece 5
Paillard, Michel; Prevosto, Marc; Barstow, Sf; Soares, Cg.
The MAST II WAVEMOD Project aimed at improving stochastic modelling of ocean waves and currents in coastal waters. In order to supplement existing data, two measurement campaigns were carried our, one on the Atlantic coast of Portugal, and, secondly, on the northern coast of Crete in the Mediterranean. The Portuguese measurements covered 7 months during winter 1993-1994, while off Crete, measurements started early in February 1994 and continued for 10 months, In both sites, two directional Waveriders and one non-directional Waverider were deployed along a transect our from the coast in water depths between 10 and 100 m. In addition, the Mediterranean site also incorporated measurements of mean current velocities. Available satellite data were analysed to...

Rapport de mission sur les récifs artificiels en Espagne et au Portugal - 12-23 avril 1999 5
Dao, Jean-claude; Lacroix, Denis; Veron, Gerard.

Local fishermen's perceptions of the usefulness of artificial reef ecosystem services in Portugal 5
Ramos, Jorge; Lino, Pedro G.; Himes-cornell, Amber; Santos, Miguel N..
Proponents of artificial reef (AR) deployment are often motivated by the usefulness of such structures. The usefulness of ARs is related to their capability of providing ecosystem services/additional functions. We present two distinct Portuguese AR case studies: (1) The Nazare reef off the central coast of Portugal and (2) the Oura reef off the Algarve coast. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with local fishermen in the fishing towns of Nazare and Quarteira pre-and post-AR deployment. The main focus of the interviews was to understand fishermen's perception of AR usefulness (or lack thereof) in terms of nine ecosystem services/additional functions potentially provided by the ARs. We tested the null hypothesis that ARs do not provide additional...
